When did Mercedes start using better steel on their E-Class?

I 've had two 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class models and both rusted. When did Mercedes start using better steel on their E-Class?

Unfortunately, this generation of Mercs didn't hold up well thanks to cost-cutting. Most enthusiasts report that cars built before early-1990s seem to be more solid - but it can depend on how well they've been looked after or if they've been badly repaired after accident damage.
