I'm selling my car which has private plates and is due an MoT - will I need a new MoT if I change the plates?

My car has private plates on and is due an MoT within the next two weeks, I'm thinking of selling soon and I'll be retaining the private plates so what will happen to the MoT as it will show the wrong reg number once I sell? Will it require another MoT or is there a more simple solution. I could swap the plates prior to the MoT but will I get the V5C back in time?

It will not require another MoT because the certificate has the VIN number which proves the identity of the vehicle. You will need to get a replacement certificate when you change the number plate though, but the MoT centre that carries out the test should be able to do this for £10. Explain the situation to the garage before you have the MoT test done and this should save any hassle or confusion when you return at a later date for a replacement certificate.
