I’m abroad for a year and want to park my car up - how does this affect insurance?

I’m away for a year and want to leave my car with my father-in-law. He will be keeping it on his drive and hardly driving it. How does this affect insurance? Shall I make him the registered keeper? How do I get a quote from the insurance company?

You either need to keep everything as it is, and your father in law can (if his policy allows the extension of use to drive other vehicles) drive on his own policy. Alternatively SORN the vehicle and cancel the insurance and tax if the vehicle is a low-value vehicle. If it is, insure the vehicle for being laid up only. You do not need to change any details on the V5C.
