If I have a protected NCD but have claimed and switch insurers - should I declare a claim?

I have been driving for over 40 years and in recent times have been displaying the kind of loyalty insurance companies show to their own clients - i.e I have been switching regularly to save money and take advantage of these "introductory" offers. Inevitably this means the inconvenience of a little added paperwork every year, but there are real savings to be had. I have had a protected NCD for many years as peace of mind and have wondered, on the basis I do make a claim, there should, in theory, be no increase in premium the following year, and my NCD remains intact. Should I switch insurer, however, should I be declaring a "claim" within the last five years (as they always ask) or remain silent, given my NCD is protected?

I think you are getting confused with two different things. If you make a claim, you must declare it. Simple as that. Just because you have protected no claims does not mean your premium will not go up if you make a claim. Your bonus will still intact, but you are now an additional risk due to having claimed.
