The interior of my Ford Escort Mk1 smells of petrol when driving - what's wrong?

I have a Ford Escort Mk1 and the interior smells of petrol when driving. The boot has same smell of fumes. What's causing it?

The petrol tank is in the boot so it may not be correctly sealed. If there's a smell of petrol from the front seats, then it could be that either the engine is running too rich or that you have a leak in the engine bay. Needs sorting.
