I unknowingly bought a remapped van - do I have to pay to fix the problems this remap has caused?
I bought a 2013 Volkswagen Transporter from a Volkwagen commercial van dealer in Wales six months ago. I've already had the van back there for a couple of warranty issues, but recently an engine management light has appeared as well. I took it to a more local Volkswagen commercial dealer for convenience. The local dealer replaced the EGR under the warranty, but as soon as I drove it out of the garage the warning light came on again. The local garage now say that the engine has previously had a re-map, which may be causing the issue. The local garage are saying it needs a new ECU to overcome the issue, but this is not covered by the warranty. I'm awaiting a reply from the primary dealer. Can you offer any advise as to whether this can be classed as a warranty repair?

The selling dealer is automatically liable for any faults that develop within the first six months, regardless of warranty. Obliviously, it depends on the nature of the mapping, but you could argue that the seller misled you as the modification was not declared at the time of sale. I would guess that they weren't aware of it in the first place. Or the mapping has been modified by mistake during a service or work to the van. I would ask your local Volkswagen dealer to supply a report on the re-map and the problem(s) it has caused. You can then tell the selling dealer to fix the van and return the mapping to standard or supply you with a refund, minus the usage you’ve already had from the van for the past six months.
