Neglectful drivers 'could be jeopardising cheap cover'

Wed, 10 Jun 2009
Drivers who have managed to secure cheap car insurance could be jeopardising their inexpensive cover by failing to take care of their vehicle's engine properly.

According to auto care firm Comma, too many motorists are neglecting basic maintenance.

Research by the group revealed five million motorists never check engine oil levels.

Seat owners were found to be the worst culprits - with 71.4 per cent admitting they do not carry out a dipstick test as often as they should.

Meanwhile, 68 per cent of Jaguar drivers and 67 per cent of Volkswagen motorists also acknowledged they were not checking their oil regularly enough.

Comma claimed this could be a costly mistake as fixing a damaged engine costs an average of £1,413.

In addition to this, motorists whose vehicles develop a serious fault through a lack of basic maintenance could be increasing their chances of being involved in a collision, which means drivers may be putting their cheap car insurance premiums at risk.
