All-new SsangYong Rexton confirmed for 2017

SsangYong has officially unveiled the all-new Rexton. The large SUV will be powered by a new range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines - developed in-house by SsangYong - and start from £25,000 when it reaches the UK in late 2017.

The 2017 Rexton SUV will be wider and longer than the car it replaces and be powered by SsangYong’s latest 2.2-litre diesel engine, which should provide enough torque to match the outgoing car's 3.0 tonne towing capacity. A turbocharged 2.0-litre GDi petrol engine will also be available, although SsangYong hasn't released any details in regards to CO2 emissions or fuel economy.

As before, the new Rexton will be a genuine off-roader, with switchable four-wheel drive fitted as standard. There will also be the option of low-range gears for tackling tough conditions, such as wet fields, muddy farm tracks and snow.

Judging from the picture below, the cabin will get a significant step-up in quality, with more soft touch plastics and the option of quilted leather trim. The dash is dominated by an all-new infotainment system, with a 9.2-inch HD screen. It's unclear if this will be included among the standard kit, but the HD screen will provide access to navigation, DAB audio, mobile wi-fi and smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth.

SsangYong has pledged to improve safety across the board, with autonomous braking, blind spot detection and an intuitive traffic alert system that will notify the driver of oncoming traffic when reversing out of a parking bay or driveway.

There is no word on pricing, but expect the new Rexton to command a small increase on the current car’s £23,000 base price. It will also be covered by a five year unlimited mileage warranty for personal or business use.

The new Rexton will get its official launched at the Seoul Motor Show on the 30 March and reach the UK in December. All the pictures suggest that the production car will be almost identical to the LIV-2 concept that made its debut at the Paris Motor Show 2016.

This could possibly fill the gap vacated by Hyundai when they took the Santa Fe into BMW and Mercedes pricing territory

We have a Rexton but have not been able to drive it recently. The nearest specialist is 25 miles away. The parts have to come from abroad. The diagnostic software is not accessible by the AA so if you breakdown you may well be stuck. Had we known this before we bought the car we would not have done. SsangYong need to have a good, user friendly network of garage support who SsangYong work positively with for customer satisfaction.

Is it because SsangYong are so difficult to work with that there is no dealership in the Bristol area?
