Ford announces prices for new Mondeo

Ford has confirmed the pricing and specs for the new Ford Mondeo. Available with EcoBoost engines and a new hybrid powertrain, the new Mondeo will reach the UK in December with prices starting at £20,795.

Long overdue, the new Mondeo was originally launched at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, but the closure of the Genk plant in Belgium resulted in a two year delay. However, Ford now say the Mondeo is ready to roll of its new Spanish production line in Valencia. 

The new Ford Mondeo will feature a new range of engines, which will include the all-new 1.5-litre EcoBoost. Buyers will also have the powerful 2.0-litre EcoBoost unit to choose from - as found in the Focus ST - and Ford will also offer 1.0-litre EcoBoost, which will emit less than 130g/km of CO2. Power outputs are yet to be confirmed, but expect the 2.0-litre unit to return 250PS. 

For the first time ever, the Mondeo will also get a plug-in hybrid powertrain, with a 2.0-litre petrol engine linked to an electric motor to emit just 99g/km of CO2. There will also be two diesels on offer, in the form of a 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre engines, which will emit a respective 94g/km and 107g/km of CO2. Ford will also offer the Mondeo with four-wheel drive, although these models will not be available until the spring of 2015.

All Mondeos get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but a dual-clutch six-speed Powershift transmissions will be available as an option. The new Mondeo also gets improved safety kit, with pedestrian detection that can identify people in the road and automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not respond to audio warnings. 

Like the Fiesta and Focus, the Mondeo embraces Ford’s latest design language with a trapezoidal grille and angular light clusters. The design is sleeker and sportier than the outgoing model, and Ford promises a dynamic drive. Four and five-door bodystyles will be available, along with an estate variant; however, four-door models will be limited to hybrid models only.

Ford claims the new Mondeo will feel a lot more upmarket, compared to its predecessor, with higher quality materials throughout. The dashboard is dominated by a large eight-inch colour touchscreen, which will display navigation, infotainment and in-car data. Ford’s Sync 2 system will also be fitted, with voice control and Bluetooth connectivity. It can also be used as a WiFi hotspot for as many as eight difference devices.
