BMW introduces 114d

BMW has unveiled the 114d, a frugal new diesel variant of the 1 Series, powered by a 1.6-litre TwinPower diesel. It has 95PS and 235Nm of torque, making for a 0-62mph time of 12.2 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. It's available to order now but prices have yet to be announced.

More importantly, the official economy figure is 65.7mpg, with emissions of 112g/km, thanks to EfficientDynamics technology. There’s start/stop, a shift indicator, an ECO PRO driving mode, active aerodynamics and low rolling resistance tyres to help reduce emissions.

Additionally, BMW has announced improvements to the 3 Series range, with a new entry level 170PS petrol engine in the 320i EfficientDynamics saloon, which has brisk performance coupled with low emissions and impressive economy.

It can hit 62mph in 7.6 seconds and yet has combined cycle economy of 53.3mpg and emissions of 124g/km. The 320i is complimented by the 316i, which has a 0-62mph sprint of 8.9 seconds. Emissions are 134g/km and official economy is 47.9mpg.

The ‘Professional’ sat nav system first seen in the BMW 3 Series Touring is now available in the saloon, too. The 316i Saloon is priced from £22,850, while the 320d EfficientDynamics costs from £25,730. They’ll be available from November.

Finally, the 3 Series Touring is now available with a broader engine range, with a 320i petrol engine and 318d and 316d diesels. The 320i produces 184PS  and has impressive performance – 0-62mph takes 7.5 seconds.

The 318d and 316d Touring are designed with economy in mind – both produce 123g/km of CO2 and return 60.1mpg on the combined cycle. The 318d offers the better performance of the two, with a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds versus 11.2 seconds for the 316d.

Prices for the 320i Touring are yet to be announced, but the 316d Touring costs from £26,180, while the 318d starts at £28,280. They’ll be available from November.
