Mitsubishi's ASX 'crossover' to start at £14,999

Mitsubishi has revealed details of its new ASX 'crossover' which will go on sale at the beginning of July. Smaller than the Outlander, it's designed to be an alternative to the ordinary hatchback and with prices starting at £14,999 it looks good value too.

That gets you the entry-level 1.6-litre petrol with 115bhp which can average an impressive 47.1mpg. Only one other engine is available - a 1.8 DiD diesel with 148bhp that's also economical at 51.4mpg. Both engines use a stop/start system along with brake regeneration and low rolling resistance tyres in order to keep CO2 emissions low and help improve efficiency.

Like other crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti, the ASX will be available with four-wheel drive (only with the more powerful diesel engine) making it useful if you regularly tow a trailer or caravan.

And with seven airbags as standard on all models, including a driver's knee airbag, it's no surprise the ASX was awarded the maximum five start rating for crash safety in Euro NCAP crash tests.

Equipment levels are good too. There are three trim levels - ASX 2, ASX 3 and ASX 4 and standard kit on all includes air conditioning, alloy wheels, stability control, hill start assist and keyless entry. Top ASX 4 models add luxuries such as leather seats, sat nav and Bluetooth but prices rise accordingly with the top model costing £22,049.
