Female motorists 'should brush up on car maintenance'

Women drivers may benefit from improving their basic vehicle maintenance knowledge if they want to avoid having to rely on their car insurance policy's breakdown cover, it has been suggested.

Research by Churchill showed female motorists are less knowledgeable when it comes to what goes on under the bonnet than their male counterparts.

Of those surveyed, 72 per cent of ladies were unsure about how they would go about checking their brake fluid.

In comparison, 35 per cent of men could not explain how to complete this task.

The poll also found, 44 per cent of women were unable to demonstrate how to conduct a dipstick test, compared to 21 per cent of male participants.

Churchill spokesperson Claire Foster said: "Having basic car maintenance knowledge can not only help prevent car breakdown situations, but can keep motorists - especially women - feeling more confident on the roads."

Meanwhile, previous research by the group looked at the areas around Premiership football grounds to find out where people were most likely to make car insurance claims.

Residents near Tottenham Hotspur's White Hart Lane were discovered to be the unluckiest in this respect.
