Coronavirus: Asda and Morrisons slash 12p-per-litre off petrol
Both Asda and Morrisons have cut 12p-per-litre off the cost of petrol and 8p per litre off diesel. The cuts by the two supermarkets represent the largest ever single fuel price cut by a retailer. The cuts have come in response to falling demand because of coronavirus and a global oil price now at an 18 year low.
Driver's could see the cost of filling up a family sized car, like a Ford Focus, drop by about £9 with current fuel reductions at Morrisons. These stats are based on the current average cost of unleaded (120.3p), according to the RAC Foundation's fuel price tracker.
Petrol sold at supermarket forecourts will be around 104p, a price last seen nearly four years ago. Diesel should drop to around 111p-per-litre.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “These unprecedented times are leading to unprecedented price cuts on fuel – the largest single cut from a retailer we’ve ever seen. The price of oil has fallen so far – down to an 18-year low – that it was inevitable that pump prices would eventually follow suit."
It's also worth noting that on 16 March 2020, about a week ago, we reported savings that would amount to average unleaded prices dropping to around 112p and diesel to 115p-per-litre. This significant drop reflects the global price of oil, which has been tumbling in recent weeks.
As more and more people reduce travel and work from home, demand is expected to fall even further.

All these ridiculous measures will have no impact on the spread of the virus. When you fill up with fuel, your hands will be covered with all sorts of nasties - the answer - wash your hands at the next opportunity. We don't seem to appreciate that we are always being exposed to bugs and viruses and, although this is a nasty one, a few commonsense measures will give us the best chance of not contracting it. I have to say though, that a good many of us will have already had the disease and got over it.I know that many will criticise this approach and opt for 'following the rules'. The point is that the authorities have no other advice to give because they know they can do nothing about it. All we need to to is stay calm, have a bit of commonsense and go about our lives. This virus will pass soon, and we'll be wondering why the heck we made so much of a fuss about it, especially compared to flu.

At a local Tesco, they are the most expensive in the area for petrol at 119.9p per litre. The BP is 117.9p and Morrisons is 103.9p per litre. I don't know how they can still charge this much for petrol when Morrisons is so low.rushman1uk on 23 March 2020

Please remember that when using the card reader when paying by credit/debit card, will be covered in germs including of course, the coronavirus. The fact is that the card reader has more germs on than a toilet. A good idea is to use disposable gloves or sanitise your hands immediately afterwards.This also applies to ATM machines when you need to draw money out. Common sense is a wonderful thing

Fat lot of good fuel cheap at the moment as we are told not to travel unnecessarily. No trips to the coast then. I use ASDA as the self service pumps seem more reliable than Tesco and it is cheaper. Put a box of my own disposable gloves in the car ready but goodness know when I'll fill up next. By the end of isolation the price will have gone up as Russia and Saudi Arabia will have agreed to stuff us as usual.Add a comment
