Kia Stonic 1.4 2

The Kia Stonic is one of the funkiest-looking cars in the compact crossover class and that’s one of the major draws. Look beneath the skin and you find a car that’s comfortable, well made and offers plenty of cabin space. The raised driving position makes it easy to get in and out, while the boot is as big as any small hatch’s and can carry a wheelchair. Affordable running costs add to the Stonic’s charms, which include a generous amount of equipment and safety kit.

Hyundai i10 1.0 S

The i10 city car is ideal if most of your driving is within city limits as the Hyundai is so easy to park and slot through busy streets. A willing 1.0-litre engine will also carry you along motorways with good refinement, while the ride and handling are among the best in class. There’s plenty of room for the driver and the rear seats offer more space than most small cars. Other attractions of the i10 are its low weekly cost of £48.

Skoda Octavia 1.5 TSI SE Auto

There are many Skoda Octavia models you could choose as your next mobility car, but our vote goes to the 1.5 TSI SE with automatic gearbox. This spacious hatchback looks handsome, has loads of cabin space front and rear, and a massive boot. It’s very relaxing to drive thanks to the smooth ride and slick transmission, while the 1.5-litre petrol engine is capable of more than 50mpg. An Advance Payment of £95 is a small price to pay for such ability and comfort.

Hyundai Ioniq 1.6 GDi SE Hybrid

Choosing a mobility car does not exclude you from picking a car with greener credentials and the Hyundai Ioniq 1.6 GDi SE Hybrid ticks a lot of boxes. There’s no advance payment needed and the £59.25 weekly payment doesn’t use your full allowance. An automatic gearbox comes as standard, but drivers under the age of 25 are not allowed to drive the Ioniq through the Motability Scheme.

Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv-G SE-L Nav+ Auto

We could happily recommend a couple of cheaper to lease Mazda 6 models, but this one gets our vote thanks to its sweet-shifting automatic gearbox. It helps make this Mazda one of the most refined ways to cover and distance, yet the 6 also has adept handling when you fancy having some fun. The brilliantly constructed cabin serves up masses of space and generous boot even in four-door saloon form.

Ford C-MAX 1.0 Zetec

The Ford C-MAX is one of the best compact hold-alls you’ll find and it’s also blessed with excellent comfort and handling. This balance of talents makes it a fine car to drive and all of the controls are light and easy at low speeds. We also like the raised driving position for its ease of entry. Lots of space in the rear is ideal for passengers or a wheelchair, while the large boot can cope with all you throw at. An Advance Payment of £45 seems like a small price to pay for this blend of abilities.

Renault Kadjar 1.3 TCe Play

Renault’s Kadjar is one of those cars that seems hard to believe offers so much yet comes with no Advance Payment and a weekly rental of £61.20. Admittedly, this model comes with the 1.3-litre petrol engine, but it has a peppy 140PS and delivers strong fuel economy. The Kadjar’s SUV styling means it’s easy to get in and out of, the driving position is excellent and all-round vision better than most in this class.

Volkswagen Up 1.0 Take Up 5dr

The Volkswagen Up shows no signs of losing its appeal to a great many drivers and its easy-going nature holds much appeal for those seeking a mobility car. Its light controls and nimble handling are ideal in town and the Volkswagen also feels at home on faster roads. In five-door form it has enough room for four with good access, though the boot is very small. Low running costs and a £52.50 weekly payment are big attractions, while under-25s can also enjoy the Up experience.

SEAT Leon ST 1.5 TSI Evo FR DSG

An Advance Payment of just £99 is needed to put you in the sleek SEAT Leon ST with an automatic gearbox. Other models are available with no Advance Payment but have the manual transmission. We like the 1.5 TSI Evo FR model for its sporty looks, nimble handling, smooth ride and lengthy equipment count. It’s also easy on fuel and has a surprisingly large boot to carry all of your gear and hold a wheelchair with room to spare.

Mazda MX-5 1.5 SE+

Hang on, what’s a Mazda MX-5 doing in this list? Well, why should drivers in need of a mobility car miss out on the fun of this perky little roadster. No reason at all and the MX-5 is available through the Motability Scheme with a £299 Advance Payment if you stick with the entry-point 1.5 SE+ model. That’s no hardship as the engine is an absolute treat to use and complements the rest of the brilliant driving experience. Jeen drivers will love the handling and open-air thrills that are quickly accessed by dropping the roof back on sunny days.
