Heard on radio 5 this morning that there are plans in London to get rid of all/most zebra crossings due to over use. The over use is causing too much backing up of traffic.
I suppose these are all to be replace by pelicans

I've never known backing up of traffic to worry our masters, most recent measures seemed designed to promote it.
I wonder which Government minister has been inconvenienced?

From what we in the sticks hear, traffic in London moves so slowly that able-bodied people can cross almost anywhere.

Zebras do cause problems when situated in the wrong place, and outside my old uni's library there was one, which at busy times you could be stuck for ages. A friend was run over there as a women was watching one person cross the road, when they stepped onto the pavement she floored it not realising more people had stepped into the road in front of her.
I am surprised at london trying to do something to speed up motorists though, what with their re phased traffic lights, bus lanes, etc. Tony B or John P must have been stuck somewhere with out a buslane

Isn't it to speed things up when the charge starts up. Along with setting the traffic lights back to 'efficient'. ;-)

There are virtually no zebra crossings in Scotland, haven't seen one for years. There might be a statistic connected to that.

I reckon it's all a lead-up to the introduction of a Zebra Crossing Charge...
Mind you, in London my experience is that if I stop at a Zebra crossing the pedestrians eye you nervously waiting for you to suddenly accelerate and mow them down and the drivers behind you beep and flash at you as you are obviously mad. Cars coming the other way often don't bother to stop either, unless the pedestrians are actually on their side of the crossing at the time.
