Ford Grand C-MAX - Insurance windscreen replacement - Ravenger

My 9 month old Grand C-Max suffered a windscreen chip today, which shows signs of cracking, so it may well need a new windscreen

I'm going to call out my insurer's approved windscreen repairer tomorrow, but the car has a heated windscreen and wiper sensors, which makes a replacement more complex.

i've read all sorts of horror stories about inferior non-OEM replacement screens being fitted by these 'preferred' companies, as well as problems caused to the electrics during fitting, and I want to make sure they do a decent job.

Am I within my rights to insist on exactly the same type of original Ford windscreen to be fitted if they decide I need a replacement?

As it's a few months until winter proper I'm also concerned that any faults with the heated screen might not show up until I need to use it a while later, when I'd have no chance to prove they fitted the screen incorrectly, or that it was faulty in the first place.

Its your car therefore you can choose to have it repaired where you want BUT there is possibly a catch.

The last time I needed a replacement I took the car to the main dealer, it was only about a year old at the time. Insurance company subsequently refused to pay saying it had to be done by their approved supplier and I had not used their nominated company. I knew this was not the case and asked where it said this in the policy, they changed tack and agreed to pay.

When I renewed I spotted the new policy had a new clause in it, if you don't use their nominated supplier its £200 excess instead of £50.

Unfortunately my insurance policy states that if I don't use their preferred repairer they'll only pay £125 towards the cost of the windscreen.

Insurance is to put you back to where you were before the event.

Go to the Ins Co supplier and ask for a FORD heated windscreen/rain sensor...........they will contact the insurer and get permission.

I have had 4 screens in 50 years pf driving........Ford/Honda/Mazda and all have been replaced under insurance with the genuine part.............the last occasion they said there would be a delay of 1 week for the Mazda screen as it was coming from Japan........it arrived in 2 days, Mazda branded, made in France.

The fitter said he had to use old rubber mounts as they were not foc...........he then produced them from his van and fitted new...........he said he should bill me ££s for this.....just a windscreen ploy (I would suggest!)

Of the three screens I have had replaced in recent years, all came with Pilkington branding.

One was for a Disco, one for a Zafira and one for a Prius. Pilkingtons also produce screens for most manufacturers as an OEM, all that changes on the "official" screen is the branding. The Disco one was heated and worked perfectly, which was a bit of a plus as its original one didn't over large areas.

It's highly likely that whatever you get from a fitting company will be from one of the OEMs that Ford get to produce their parts anyway.

The problem you can get with rain sensors is that the wrong screen is fitted. Those intended for cars with rain sensors have a gap in the blacking out behind the rearview mirror for the sensor to "see" through. Many vehicle models are available both with and without the sensor and thus screens may be available both with and without the necessary cutout. Ensure that the fitters are aware that the vehicle has a rain sensor when booking it in.

Thanks for the advice.

From some googling it looks like the supplier does fit genuine replacements. I've got them booked in tomorrow to attempt a repair. If they can't repair it I'll insist on an original Ford replacement, even it it may take them a while to source it.

I'm pretty sure that, on those screens which are heated and/or have wiper sensors incorporated, the only screesn which are available are the OEM ones.

My Mondeo had to have a new screen fitted under warranty. Took it to the Ford Main Dealer but they got Autoglass to do the job as main dealers don't normally fit windscreens. But there were no problems whatsoever and the screen fitted was an original one.

Such a screen is likely to cost several hundred pounds so it's well worth checking that you have complied with all the conditions in your insurance policy so that the insurer will pay the entire cost of the job. If you don't then you could be severely out of pocket!

If it has not already cracked you should really repair it rather than replace it to remove the risk of further cracking.

If it is a fresh windscreen chip that is below £1 coin size it will be able to be done to a high standard ( barely visible) that will pass an mot and be guaranteed against cracking. This will remove the concern about some pattern part badly fitting windscreen with unsightly thicker heating elements being fitted.

Most insurers now penalise policyholders for any claims or apply excesses that negate the benefit of claiming for chips on your policy even if they are "free".

The nominated suppliers will often do a poor job or crack the screen in order to generate a more profitable screen sale so best to avoid them and select an experienced specialist windscreen repairer who is experienced in their trade and prepared to guarantee their work.

Even though you may have to pay for the repair out of your own pocket it is better than replacing the screen unnecessarily and having a claim on your policy.

A friend of mine is a windscreen specialist. He loves repairs, says the repair is 100% profit after buying the kit and takes only a short time. Insurance companies have driven down margins on replacements to such a degree its less profitable than repairing when the time element is considered.

He has done 4 repairs for me over the years all 100% funded by various insurance companies. Only one has failed which was simply sorted with a new screen for my excess ££'s.

Screen replacement does not count against your no claims so no need to concern yourself there.

It sounds like the windscreen fitter described is an independant if he has purchased his own equipment which is very different from the large companies who are nominated by the insurers in terms of skill and ethics.

However the insurance market is changing rapidly and what was previously a "free repair" can now count as a claim with some companies and this is different from the "No claims bonus" so claiming for a screen repair or replacement can cost you by way of an increased renewal premium even if your ncb is intact. The insurers have found another back door route to ramp up premuims at renewal.
