renault trafic 1.9dci 2006 - van wont rev over 2500 rpm - bjksteve

hi

my trafic developed a fault last week where it stopped revving over 2500rpm and the glow plug warning light comes ao and off

so i had it on a diagnostic and it showed heater plug fault and egr valve, so i had them clean out and refit the egr, reset the faults and test drive it.

it made no difference so the garage said it may be getting starved of fuel and to take it to renault (passing the buck)

so i took it to my mates garage and he said there are no faults showing up on his diagnostic analyser, but a common fault is the egr and to test it invert the egr (bypass it) and see if it makes any difference, it hasnt.

ive checked the air mass sensor, boost sensor/solenoid,all pipes etc and checked for water in the fuel filter but i can find nothing wrong

i know renault will just start replacing parts at my expence and i dontwant to go down that road

any ideas ?

cheers

Glow plug light is a 2 stage warning on these, lit is a fault detected,lit/flashing is a far more serious warning.

Good quality diagnosis is a must on these, you need some one who can read live data, dealer obviously can but your local diesel specialist can too, find them in yellow pages.

Mean time, check the vacuum hoses from and to the turbo pressure sensor and the turbo pressure sensor solenoid, mounted on the plate above the wire harness, engine right.

take them off, blow through them, thay can fill with crud,EGR can fail, the disc can actually come off but guess you checked that, usually they won't start or blow black smoke when they are faulty.

The list of things that'll give your symptoms as pretty full, from the cam phase sensor to the turbo pressure sensor,so the need for good diagnosis is tops, pay Renault for a full code read with live data print out and then go somewhere else ,if you want.

One other thing,I get more than 2 code faults on these and I start looking for short curcuits in the wireing harness,Iv'e repaired more shorts on these than I've renewed any components, favorite is under the air filter housing where it can press onto the injector wiring, the cas or the afm wiring.but shorts can be found almost anywhere there are wires,on these.

Oh,and not all code readers are equal on these,I variously use Renalt,Vaux or nissan software, depending on what will read it

Be warned,on one of these I gave up counting short circuits aften ten, there were a lot of them, and it's symptoms matched yours.

Hi Mate.

You clearly know your stuff and I'm hoping you can help.

I've got a renault trafic 1.9 dci115 2010 plate with a possible vacuum leak.

When I pump the break pedal whilst stationary I can hear hissing in the passenger foot well. The breaks become sharper for a while and the van is also nippier for a while. What do you think it is?

I'm not a mechanic but can do the basics. If you can explain where the relevant parts are I can possibly fix it.

I'm currently crossing everything in hope!

Cheers.

Andy

Hi Steve,

i worked for renault for 7 years. the problem is water gets into your air intake via the lower windscreen cover ( holes blocked by leaves and leaks over on top of engine) and shorts your air mass sensor causing it to become faulty.

change that and all your problems will be solved.

by the way, if your gear linkage comes off, use a latex glove pop it on top of the linc and push the linkage on top of it. its a temp fix but will last a year at least.

kind regards

simon

Hi I’ve got an 02 plate Renault traffic, when driving for airound 5/10 minutes withiut fail all the dash lights start lighting up 1 by 1 and the milage on digital display has gone, doesn’t affect the van when they come in but would like to get it sorted, also when I bought it the previous owner had a gearbox from an 08 plate put in it but doesn’t have the hole in the diff to put the vehicle speed sensor in? Do you know if the blanking plate is removable? Or is there anyway I can convert it to run off the abs system? And last thing as when accelerating as soon as you get to about 3000rpm it’s like it jams the brakes on and won’t rev over 3000 untill you change gear? I’m going away in it in 1 weeks time so need to get it sorted by then ideally, would be great if you can help!
