Vauxhall Astra G Diesel - fans constantly running temp gauge not moving - stevegb

hi
i have a astra g 04 diesel y17dt engine i had the glow plugs replaced now i have fault codes (p0115 engine coolant temperature circuit) (p0180 fuel temperature sensor a circuit) (p0380 glow plug/heater circuit a p0409 exhaust gas recirculation sensor a) the two fans start when the engine starts and go off about 2 minutes after the engine is turned off or when you turn the key to the fourth position this will turn the fans off i have tried a differant coolant control moduel and replaced water temperature sensor and thermostat but still the same fault codes the car starts first time but runs a bit fast and when the engine is warm and you turn it off if you turn it back on before you let it cool for 15min the reves shoot up to 25000 and the fans dont come on and the car just wants to pull away someone said it might be the a/c pressure switch all the faults seem to be connected by circuit"a" could someone explain what circuit"A"is any thoughts would be great
thanks steve

On the Astra-G, it has an ECU controlling the cooling fans, based on demand from the enigine and aircon system if fitted - stupidly GM mounted it just behind the front bumper armature where it's exposed to damp - this ECU can and does fail.

hi

thanks for the quick response i got an ecu of ebay cheap and thought even if it was faulty it would have different faults fitted it but nothing changed so ruled it out

hi

after reading post and forums for what seems months some one said about a bad earth if so how do i test for it

thanks again for reading

Sadly, testing for a bad earth is more about hard work and dogged determination than switching on Sky TV and letting the dog do it.

A multimeter is invaluable but in the end you have to get dirty and fiddle with cables, take bits off, clean with emery paper and wire wool.

got my self op-com and have 3 fault codes

p0115 coolant temperature voltage high

(01) - present

p0180 fuel temperature sensor circuit high input

(01) - present

p0380 glow device general error

(0A) - present

anyone any idea what my fault is

As the p0380 is obviously nothing to do with the other two, I must ask, have you cleared the old codes?

Best win in these circumstances is to search the Vx owner forums.

hi

have cleared old codes and these are whats left posted on the Vx site but got very little response exept some one surgested it was the air con but it was not this

Can you read live data through the diag scanner? What does engine coolant temp show? When the glow plugs were replaced, did you disconnect the engine ecu connectors on top of engine? If you did, then it is possible that there are bad or broken pins here.hth

Coolant temp at -34 is an indication of a fault with this circuit, and so the system is running in default mode and operating the fans. The wiring from the ecu to the coolant temp sensor needs to be checked for continuity ,open or short circuit.hth

hi

thanks for the reply i did test the continuity from the temp sensor plug to the ecu plug on top of the engine and i got a buz from my multimeter so both of the wires seem to be intact is there any way to test if the pins from the temp sensor are making contact in the temp sensor plug if that makes sense as the one i took off the pins are bent away from each other

thanks again

Hi Steve, thanks for replying and all that, it will contribute to the fuzzy internet database and help all those that support these cars.

It does seem to be the electrics that go, must be why taxi drivers don't turn their engines off.
