Peugeot 3008 1.6THP - Broken down again, 4 times in 17 months, what now? - guygamps

Bought the in Feb 2011 car as a 1 year old from a main Peugeot dealer in Coventry, drove it abot 8000 miles 2011 to 2012, and about another 4000 miles since, 22000 on the clock

A few weeks after buying it, car lost power and "anti pollution system failure" message showed. it was repaired under warranty by local Peugeot dealer in Hatfield

Then a few months later car was loosing power off and on, feeling sluggish, and after a few weeks of this again "anti pollution system failure" message showed, this time we were told it was a faulty timing chain, and again fixed under warranty in Hatfield

Car ran OK for about 6 months, then in June it broke down again, sudden loss of power, car went in to limp home mode a "anti pollution system failure" message showed. This time told it was bad spark plug in Cylinder 4, causing a misfire. Car repaired under warranty again (though I had to pay £50 for a set of plugs).

Now less than 3 weeks later, same thing has happened, driving home (55 miles to go down the M1), just before the M1, power lost, limp home mode, and "anti pollution system failure" message showed.

Waiting for Puegeot Assist breakdown to come out to me.

I have had the car 17months, it has broken down 4 times, it is barely run it (22000 miles) and has never been reliable.

Apart from selling it quickly after this next repair, any suggestions?

Guy

reject the car and ask for a full refund !!!!

OK, that is an interesting suggestion, is there a guide to my rights in this respect, and to the best way to follow that process.

I mean I have owned it for 17 months so will it not be very difficult to prove grounds to reject it, Obviously all the breakdowns are documented by local Peugeot main dealer in Hatfield, but I have never spoken to the dealer I bought the car from since he is not local.

I once before took a car reseller to small claims and it was a very painful experience which I would not want to repeat. this Pug is the most unreliable car I have EVER owned, only my "on its last legs" Galaxy broke down so often and it was 7 years old and had lived a hard hard life having first given years of reliable motoring.

Sorry - this link doesn't work. Could you try putting it up again?

to update the forum,

Last Thursday I called Consumer Direct (government run advice line) and found it is now operated by Citizens Advice bureau, they told me a little about the process of claiming repair, refund or replacement under the Sale of Goods Act 1979. I then call the dealer who supplied the vehicle.

To be fair they were helpful in that they were not defensive and agreed I should not have to put up with such an unreliable car, they told me to put it in writing to them and to Peugeot UK. I did that on Friday. Detailing the 4 breakdowns and asking for a refund.

I called them today and was told my letter had been received but not yet allocated an person to look after the case.

In meantime the dealer where it is being serviced and repaired has offered ne £9200 for it in part ex, which considering I paid £14,674 for it 17 months ago is somewhere in middle of expectations, but I do NOT want to accept a part ex deal. Why should I accept on a loss of £5,500 on a car which if reliable I would not be selling, or if sold privately would fetch about £2k more.

When I explained that I feel I could not in all honesty sell it privately the dealer agreed and said they themselves "would not retail it" because of it's history, but would immediatley put it through auction to get rid of it.

Thats a nice vote of confidence from a Peugeot dealer about a Peugeot car which has now (apparently) been repaired.

Although the above links is dead I did find this:

www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights

Questions, the information page tells me " Appeal Court Case law has held that the supplier must be given three chances to rectify the fault for which the goods are rejected"

I bought the car from Peugeot Dealer "A" , but the four repair efforts have been by Peugeot Dealer "B". As far as I a concerned, a trained Peugeot tech is a trainined Peugeot tech, but given the circumstance do I now need to wait for three more breakdowns and have Dealer "B" see the car, or have I met the required condition (allow for 3 attempts to repair).

In each case the car has appeared to be repaired intially, only to break down again. 4 breakdowns in 8 months, but the first breakdown was more than 6 months after I bought it, and the ruling seems to be that I have to prove the car was faulty at time of purchase. How long after a breakdown is it considered reasonable to conclude the car is repaired properly and if the first breakdown is more than 6 months after delivery does that weaken my case?

Got made a very fair offer. well above the trade in value of the vehicle, and very close to retail valu, only issue was that I would not want another Peugeot.

In end they agreed to an exchange against a Citroen C Crosser which is basically a Mitsubishi Outlander.

Getting it in a couple of weeks

Anti pollution? Would that be a DPF issue? Is that a sign your doing too many short stop start journeys? I'm interested to know exaclty what that message meant.

I like the C Crosser a lot, surprisingly rapid acceleration from the2.2 Diesel, and looks good too, something the 4007 with its grinning mouth could never achieve.

Better than the earlier built Outlander which only having a 2 litre Diesel i managed to stall frequently.

Hope it does all you want.

I have also had one of these modesl (from new) and had a number of the anti-pollution incidents early on resulting in the limp-home state. New timing chains were fitted, but not sure why they were the problem.

Recently, whilst stuck in a queue during the recent snow, the problem recurred reulting in the fan running at max permanently. All that my dealer did was to reset the warning and the problem was "fixed".

I have also had two incidents when the pipe supplying the turbo became detached, both whilst some way from home. All fixed under warranty, but poor. Bearing in mind this is a BMW engine I wonder if they have the same problems?

BMW and Peugeot/CItroen share engine technology but the 1.6 is not a BMW engine. Peugeot/Citroen manufacture the ones fitted by BMW/Mini as I understand it.

few years ago I treated my wife to a brand new Pugueot 206HDi 5 dr LX

It did nothing but go wrong, all electrical faults, took months & months to sort out & often at the dealer for 2-3 weeks at a time. I think we made something like 16 trips in the fisrt year , it was appalling and so was the service and support. It was a real no one cares attitude.

It had new ECU's & a whole wiring loom in the end & was off the road about 6 weeks.

never the same, sold it , lost heaps of money and bought a Ford. Now on our third trouble free with good dealer support.

I would never ever buy a Peugeot !

Some of the petrol engines used in minis are produced by Chrysler in Brasil I am led to believe.

Joint development between Chrysler and BMW - used for the first generation Mini. Second generation Mini and the BMW 116/118 uses engines developed by BMW/PSA.

Strictly speaking a joint development between Chrysler and Rover, which BMW got fobbed off with as part of the conditions of them keeping the new mini side of the operation.

ISTR hearing that Rovers were quite pleased to get shot of it (the engine deal, not the MINI) as the quality control was dubious and the price per unit rather higher than anticipated. The fact that BMW seem to have ditched it at the first opportunity would suggest that they had a point.

They were in the mark 1 Minis (up to 2006 or thereabouts); since then they have used engines jointly developed with Peugeot....which sounds bad news in the light of this thread, but Peugeot's problems seem to be with components and ancillaries, particularly electrical, rather than the engines themselves.

French trade unions are notoriously strong; I wonder if their car factories suffer similar problems to British Leyland et al in the 1970s?

As the OP mentions issues with spark plugs, it cannot be a diesel and so it will not have a DPF!

EGR valve, Lambda sensor, carbon canister, gulp valve......any of those things we used to thank ${deity} that only Californians had to put up with going wrong in the old days.

I live a 5 minute walk from a Peugeot dealer, but reading reports like this scares me from ever visiting them. As much as it pains me, I'd rather buy a Korean car, the reputation for reliability is a big draw.

Right now, with the prohibitive cost of motoring, increasing degradation UK driving surfaces and dealer/garages looking to extract every penny where they can, there's only three rules to buying any car of any size or type.

1) Proven reliability

2) Ride comfort

3) Reputable after-sales dealer nearby

Everything else is personal preference. If your chosen vehicle scores positive for those three, your at least half-way to tangible customer satsifaction, unless your unlucky of course.

Peugeot currently have a poor reputation for 1), used to be great at 2) (not now), and 3) is the luck of the draw.

To be fair here, the only bit of (1) that Peugeot ever had was a well-earned reputation for diesels that were both bulletproof and nigh-on immortal. The CO2 game and the various bits of other emission-related crud heaped on diesels recently has put them in the same boat as everyone else in that department these days.

They always had a reputation for appalling electrics and bits dropping off.

As the original poster, I was interested today to spot some posts on this thread long time after I stopped posting.

To recap, our errant Pug 3008 was replaced thanks to a very fair offer (close to the retail value not trade in value) providing we stayed within the PSA group, since Mrs G and I had good experience of Mitsubishi previously we got a C Crosser, since it is shares large amounts of Mitsubishi DNA!

the C Crosser is excellent, drvies and handles sublimely for a car its size and wieght, we both like manual cars that "engage" you, and the C Crosser does just that, the gear change is lovely and precise, so is the steering, there is non of the vagueness of our Mitsubishi Grandis (which we had before the Pug 3008), and all the driving experience is very very good, the practicality and build quality are good too, easier to get the main passenger seats folded away than on the Grandis. 6/7 seats are an afterthought, but we don't really need them... mind you they have prooved useful twice already on journeys that otherwise would have needed 2 cars

The negatives.

Boy is it noisy, not just diesel engine noise, but road noise, tyre noise, a simple SPL meter app on my phone at motorway speed shows about 85dB noise level. I had a car audio insttaller look at it (thinking of upgrading the speakers) and he said there is absolutley NO sound deadening materials in the car, the carpet is straight on to the metal. I am thinking of getting a Noise Killer kit fitted,

The SATNAV head unit looks the business but is terrible, you can't enter postcodes and at least 50% of the addreess you try to enter it won't find first time, e.g. Garston Drive, does not come up under town = Garston, you have to start with town = Watford to find it, even though Garston is in the satnav, and even though Garston Drive is for sure in Garston.

The built in music server is useless, you rip CDs in to it, you cannot load MP3s etc from a USB stick, and when you rip CDs, at least 70% of them don't show CD title and track names despite the built in Gracenote database. I upgraded the map and the Gracenote CD Database, and didn't see any improvement, the whole head unit is crying out for a firmware update or heading for the trash!

The FM radio is the worse I have ever known, it takes ages and ages to tune in to a preset station, and has the worst reception of any car I have ever driven.

I want to upgrade the head unit to a Pioneer or Kenwood, but have been told that it cant be done because all the car set up menus are through the head unit, Looks like I am stuck with that then :-(

the noise (which can probably be sorted) and the naff head unit (which apparently can't) spoil what is otherwise a really really really good car
