Peugeot 406 - Speaker wiring problem - HowdyDoody

Hi I hope you can help me please.

I have a 2001 406 estate. The drivers side front audio speaker is not working. I have checked the speaker itself is ok (swapping side to side). I have removed the radio and metered from the speaker plug from the back of the radio to the wires coming out of the door for the speakers. Apart from the fact that the colours do not match those of the Haynes manual, the passenger side rings through Ok but only one of the wires on the drivers side does - the violet wire is 'open circuit' - obviously the problem. The Haynes manual wiring diagram indicates a connector (where the wire colour changes) that would be the first place I want to look, but I cannot find it - does anyone out there know where that connector is please? I have had half the interior out and have not found it!
Thanks

Dave

Hi,

Thiis happened to me on my Peugeot 406 Estate - turned out to be the wires broken inside the rubber cover where they go between the door and the door post. Pull the rubber back ( abit of a pig to get back) and I'm sure, like me you find a broken wire.

Hope this helps

Thanks Robin - you were right - found wire broken just where you said and found the connectors I was looking are behind the 'door post' side of the rubber! The door side of the rubber has refitted OK but am having difficulty getting the other end of the rubber boot- the bit that goes into the door post to sit correctly - not sure if it fits around or inside of the plastic bit that holds the connectors - either way does not seem to work - very frustrating. Am going to leave it now before a hammer goes through the window!

Anyway -thanks once again

Regards

Dave

hi guys sounds like you have experience of 406 stereo's and associated wiring!

we got a 406 family estate which had a decoding problem when we bought it and had to get peugeot to recode it as not the 4 number code!

before it went in you could tell the radio was working through the intermittent beeping.

on its return theres no radio! then we found a 406 stereo from a coupe with CD changer on ebay confirmed it had a code and was told it was working now some months later we've tried fitting it but no sound or radio plus the wiring of the changer won't fit the original stereo either.

we have tried a cheap aeriel to confirm if its the stereo or aeriel and as still no radio assume they fried the radio (too late to take back and complain) and the new onemust be u/s too (again too late to return!)

as the original cd work with screen working & steering wheel controls we are trying to attach the cd changer to save constant cd changing all the way to Portugal!!!

now the problem the socket in back of stereo is different to the coupe head unit, the changer has a round din plug and peugeot have just sold me a wiring harness that confuses me as no round plugs/sockets!!!

will try an ICE shop locally but does anyone know it there is a wiring connection extension piece that I could buy off the shelf or if there is any other places they hide stereo conections?

many thanks in advance

If your 406 is a late one, 01 or after it will have multiplexed wiring which means it doesn't take kindly to having non original equipment fitted, you may be able to get an adaptor lead to fit between the radio and the car, but on my C5 I had to cut some wires on one of the connectors to prevent it intefering with the ECU and running the battery down.

Hi Ric,

Drive the car down to your local Halfords with the stereo. They generally have assorted wiring link looms that you can convert it to fit. Had a similar issue with my Son's Ford Probe - in the end Halfords flogged us a small conversion harness link and bingo the job was a good un.

Hope this helps
