Vw boot light - neil 1
The boot light on my passat has stopped working which is annoying this time of year - i believe it operates on a ball type switch? Is this easy to replace or fix. I am always a bit wary of removing panels in case i damage permanently - but would rather try than pay VW.

How old is the Passat? Recent models have the boot light switch built into the locking mechanism and are all integrated into the central locking.
Can you actually find a switch? Trace the wires back from the light unit if you can.

I've had the same prob on my 97 Passat. The switch is located in the locking mechanism. Remove the trim from the boot and take out warning triangle. Remove the lock and disconnect from the central locking system and wiring. The switch is under a black plastic cover. Replacement costs around a fiver. If I can manage it anyone can. Better than paying VW £45 per hour just to locate the problem.,

Would that be the same deal on the driver's door of my Octavia then? Can't find a switch anywhere in the door shut, and the driver's door doesn't turn the interior light on any more. Skoda say they've interrogated the ECU and it reports that I need a new driver's door control unit. Lucky it's under warranty! :-)

Octavia - yes, I had one with the same problem. On fairly early models they were notorious for failing. The second time the boot light switch failed leaving the light on all the time. On my Octavia estate I replaced it with a 'traditional' pin switch. The problem also causes trouble with the central locking; if the boot light stays on the central locking unit 'thinks' that the boot is open and the locking won't lock!

This sounds like what i expected! Can i ask do you just force the trim off - i am always wary of damaging something by forcing, although i am less concerned now i know i need to remove the trim.

Neil - no if you look carefully the trim is kept in with about 10 "furry coated" screws that blend into the trim - just remove them all and it should clip out.

Many thanks JonL - I did spot the screws and I swapped the switch all for £5.71. Now I can see the boot in the dark!
