Larger Winter Tyre / Wheel storage bag - Durelli_tyres

Hi,

reading about how to store tyres (eg summer tyres when winter tyres on the car and vice versa) the suggestion is to store them in the dark. To that end you can get tyre storage bags.

However, I have large wheel / tyre combinations off a 4x4 and these bags aren't big enough.

Does anyone know where larger bags can be brought?

Whats the alternative to these bags? Just wrapping bin liners round them?

Why do tyres need to be stored in the dark anyway?

When you go to a tyre fitter, the tyres there are not in the dark, they are in open racks for easy access.

I bought a tyre storage bag from Ebay. All sizes available just ask seller for a bigger size.

In my case it's because having a LPG fitted the tank went where the spare used to be located and so I wanted the 'grubby spare wheel' in a bag in the clean boot. The last installer I dealt with though, gave me a bag for free. Happy days!

Why stored in the dark? My guess is that UV from sunlight destabilises the rubber over time. Not a problem for dealers as they'll be selling the tyres on -rotating their stock.

I accept the argument that rubber perishes over time but my tyres wear out every two-three years so even if I use summer and winter tyres at most will be 6 years old when I come to replace them.

There are plenty of cars on the road with 6 year old tyres that have been exposed to UV that whole time.

Moving the tyres i.e. driving with them on would actually help to keep them from going brittle. If they're sat in a bag or whatever, they don't get 'worked' and there are waxes and so on in the tyre compounds that are supposed to benefit from this.

Also, ozone damages tyres.

Who's to say a mouse won't have a nibble either...?!

Fair enough, so I need to buy a mouse proof bag, it must have UV protection and it must also be airtight so I can use my vacuum cleaner to suck the ozone out.

I can then either buy an massaging machine (like the ones they have in Ikea for testing furniture) or i could be old school and hire a Swedish masseur, most likely called Bjorn, to pop round once a week and give my rubber a thorough going over....

Who knew having summer and winter tyres could be so complicated!

One can go overboard on this one as you suggest! My summer tyres and wheels are just stacked (inflated) one on top of the other, with a groundsheet round the pile, in the (dry) garage. They'll need the pressures checking before they go back on in the spring, but otherwise I can't see them coming to any more harm than if they were on the Octavia, sitting outside (2 other cars in the garage).

My summer tyres are currently in the bags the garage gave me when i had the winter tyres fitted. They're on a nice dry tarp on my garage floor.

I am not unduly concerned about ozone and UV but I did once see a field mouse in my garage.

What about the weight of the 3 wheels being on the wheel at the bottom?

It wouldn't be exposed to that if it was on the car.

Why do they need to be stored in bags?

Storage in the dark, eg at the back of the garage, will prevent the UV deterioration which is the main ageing issue for tyres.

Vans, caravans and trailers are all fitted with tyres with marginal spare load capacity, 10% at best, so should be replaced within 7 years of manufacturing date, whether used or not, due to this UV deterioration.

Cars, on the other hand, have tyres with far more spare load capacity so don't really have an issue with tyre ageing.
