Peugeot 306 - 306 Hdi ticking / knocking - mw01908

Hi

Yesterday my 306 HDI has developed a loud ticking which I can hear at idle nad it increases in frequency with the engine rpm. It is loudest at 1800 and then is masked somewhat by engine noise at 3000rpm. I only had the bottom pulley replaced around 4-5 years ago so surely its not this again?!¬! What else could it be? I am taking it to a garage tomorrow as the car sounds very bad and I am scared of a breakdown or engine damage. How can I try to make sure the garage is correct in its diagnosis and doesn't try to rip me off with a puley when i don't need one? Is there anything I could look for myself?

Cheers for any help

Difficult to diagnose without hearing it, if its a ticking it sounds like something mechanical but a knock is probably a faulty injector, does it sound like the noise that the older IDI engines make? These are normally very reliable engines but cheap injectors can be obtained from ebay and unlike many other engines they don't have to be programmed in.

Hi Peter, I'm used to the way the engine sounds normally. You can hear it inside the car up until around 30mph then its masked by road noise. Its a definate ticking I guess, more than a knock which gets faster as the revs increase. Performance is unchanged and the turbo bit is working normally (no limp mode)

If its an injector it won't necesseraly affect the running its just not atomising the fuel properly. If its one injector the noise will be at half engine speed so if its doing it at tickover look at the crank shaft pully and see if its doing it every other revolution. Another possibility is a hydraulic tappet giving to much clearance, that again would be at every other revolution but will normally go quiet if you rev the engine and stay quiet for a while at tickover and then come back.

Hello! Just logged on and read your message tonight so not able to check tappets etc. I've had a fun afternoon taking the car to garages as the noise got worse. One said the noise was due to low oil levels (dipstick shows just under half between min and max lines). I doubt this theory don't you? But wandered into car parts place who agressively tried to sell me a litre of fully synthetic oil for £14. Blimey thats dear.

The other wants to have the car in for investigation, 1 hours to do that and another hour to fit a probable new cranskhaft pully, if thats what they find it is.

Meanwhile by the time I got home the noise had virtually disappeared so its hard to do anything with it now! Heres wondering if I'll only find out what it is when the car breaks down???? I'm not sure what to do now apart from take out breakdown cover quickly in case!

If the noise comes back again I would take it to a diesel specialist rather than a garage, they usually know what they are doing and charge less.

Don't rule out the bottom pulley. Mine was first changed at around 85,000 miles but then needed changing again a couple of years later. Regards.

Ok thanks I'll seek out a diesel specialist Peter.

Interesting Paul. I've probably done about 30,000 miles since the pulley was first changed. How did you tell it was the bottom pulley gone again, did the car breakdown or did you notice a noise and got it diagnosed?

Can't give good details because my son got the car off me and I was surprised when he told me that he had to have the bottom pulley replaced due to a knocking noise. Regards.

Ok, Well the noise has virtually gone away on its own so its hard to diagnose. No point in taking it to a garage now! Funny. Heres hoping it will stay quiet. Thanks for the replies and I'll post if theres any update to the situation.

HDI's are known to have ticky injectors. It disappears at above around 3000rpm when the injectors switch to a different cycle or something, I can't remember the exact details but it is fairly well known. My old DTurbo used to have exactly the same thing.

Really? First I've heard of this.

However, the crankshaft pulley is a well-known issue and it does click when nearing failure. I've had experience of this and also of the problem disappearing when the car is warmed up, which can make it hard to diagnose. Tell-tale debris on the pulley itself will normally give the game away.
