BMW 320ci Convertible - BMW buying advice please - MattDavies

Hi, I'm hoping some of your knowledgeable people will be able to offer me some advice.

I'm looking at buying a 2001 BMW 320 ci convertible, it's only done a genuine 28k, and seems to be very clean. It's going for £6k which I think is reasonable.

Is there anything specific I should look out for? problems that may manifest due to age rather than milage?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Is it an early or late 2001? I recall that in October the 3 series range all had new engines and the front lights got a bit of a restyling.

You can do a price check on the What Car website if you have the full spec. Seems a shade pricey to me but it depends on whom you are buying it from too.

Rear springs tend to break and electrics can play up but there are plenty of places where these can be fixed without paying main dealer prices.

Rather obviously, check that the roof works and is in good condition!

Bit pricey IMO. That's less than 3,000 miles a year so likely to have seen a lot of short journeys. Check suspension not noisy over bumps, if manual that the clutch has plenty of travel and doesn't bite at the end of its travel. No engine smoking when warm? Does it brake and steer straight ie not knocked out of alignment by constantly visting speed bumps - check tyres for uneven wear. Would be good to see it had been serviced annually or at least 5 times in the 10 years.

Good advice here!!

I've had an E46, good car - nothing much goes wrong but check it's been serviced properly. The straight 6 is a peach. There are plenty of good inexpensive independent BMW garages who will service it properly for you and for the price of an hour's labour will probably check it over for you before you buy if there's one near you and you can arrange it with the vendor.

Front suspension bushes can go - it then needs new arms but not too expensive. Rear coil springs can crack at the bottom - listen for a rattling sounds when driving over rough surfaces.

Get a proper HPI check, make sure it's not cloned, do the usual checks as listed by other BR's and make sure everything works and it drives straight, no uneven tyre wear etc or signs of crash repairs. Check of course the hood for leaks and any sign of damp or a musty smell inside.

Good luck

J

Hi, Thank for your replies and advice, much appreciated.

It's a manual, early 2001 because it's on a Y plate. I've ot seen it yet, just photos (which can hide a multitude of sins!) but I've been told it was a summer car, so garaged half the year which seems plausible, I think that is why the price is higher than comparable aged cars. One owner from new with full BMW hisory, of course that might mean only a couple of stamps.

I currently use a decent indy for my Audi so servicing shouldn't be a problem, they specialise in the big 3 germans so should be fine for the servicing.

Thanks again

Matt

If it passes all the other checks (and long MoT) offer five k and wait.........!

I would not buy it..

Winter is coming. Big squeeze on consumer spending is going to get much worse. You are buying a bling car with no obvious family value (being brutal)..

There will be lots of people selling cars like it in the next year.. much cheaper.. People's priorities will refocus...away from large cars to economical ones.

I would not pay more than £4k. Offer it .. and expect to be refused... Eventally you will be happily surprised...

Sounds like you're paying alot just for its low mileage if im being honest.

I've been looking on autotrader and it doesn't seem out of price range with others of similar age, but the others seem to have much higher miles. so is it really that over priced?

Do traders really mark up a £6k car expecting to get knocked by down over a grand? I guess they always price high to give themselves movement and of course it's hard to gauge how much they will accept.

How much would you expect one like this to go for?

I'm probably a dealers dream as I don't really know much about cars and what sort of value they really have.

Its not 'overpriced' but the dealer is certainly milking its worth. Mileage isnt the only indicator of wear but low mileage sells.

It depends on the car, at the end of the day this is still a 10 year old car which doesnt fit the profile of what most people are buying. If it was a diesel Focus then he'll stand his ground more as there'll be more people interested in it.

But 3 series convertible is a car with a strong following, he might not get the phone ring off the hook frantically but people will want it. Its still a desirable car.

How much would you expect one like this to go for?

I dont know how they've acquired it, what they gave on it or what it owes them but i'd go in low at £4.5k and try and get him nearer the £5k mark personally.

yep, 11 months MOT, 5k was around the mark I was thinking of.

Hopefully they'll want to deal.

Thanks again!

Nice car, cars of this age determine its value more based on condition and desirability rather than any book price. I think £5,000 would be about right. On standard mileage it should go for £5k so it depends how much of a premium the dealer's hoping for due to the number on the dashboard.

Thats the one. lol

Looks a damn nice car - could be tempted myself! Next point is the first registration date. If before or after 1st March 2001 the annual road tax differs, I think.

When you make an offer be sure to report back here too!!

Thanks for all the advice, but I'm going to miss out on this one.

My wifes car has blown up and needs replacing, and it' slightly more important than a nice soft top for me, what with having to get the kids around and everything.

Oh well, there is always next year!

BMW 320ci Convertible - BMW buying advice please - jamie745

Blown up? As in...Kaboom?

BMW 320ci Convertible - BMW buying advice please - MattDavies

Well, not the whole car, just the engine!

it might not be quite that bad, timing belt went, damage to the engine is being assessed but it doesn't sound good... I suspect we will replace the car, so my budget has just been reduced somewhat.

Thanks again for all comments.
