Death of the second hand petrol market? - motorwaycruiser

Hi, just wondering if my experience of the second hand market in northern Ireland is typical or whether things are different in Britain. I'm in no hurry to buy but I've been keeping an eye on local dealers for a 2-3 year old petrol engined Mondeo sized car. I've almost decided I'm wasting my time because all the local dealers' stock is almost exclusively diesels in that bracket. In fact most of the dealers near me don't even bother stocking petrols in any bracket except performance models or very small cars.

Has it really reached the stage where the average second hand buyer isn't interested in petrols any more?

I know my personal situation is skewed by living in a rural area near the Irish border (diesel is significantly cheaper in Ireland compared to the UK). But I know that's not the only factor e.g. tax legislation and percieved fuel economy. I was wondering if the situation is similar elsewhere in the UK?

On the plus side, whenever they do have a petrol in stock the saving vs the diesel tends to be pretty significant, so as long as I plan to drive it until it's worthless I should be able to get a good deal.

Due to the economy of diesels - they are 'in' right now.

I have a feeling that as legislation toughens and more stringent emmisions/standards have to be achieved (e.g euro 6 and above) that diesels will be not that much more economical than petrol and a lot less reliable (seen in the current post 2005 diesels)

Once that happens, It's likely the price of older diesels on the used market will increase due to demand.

More and more people will then revert back to petrol - and the balance will be restored

I had to read this, because I've bought many second-hand items, but petrol?

Lol, you can't beat the internet for pedantry.

Mind you, there are people round here prepared to run their cars on chip fat. If that's not second hand fuel what is ;-)?

Speaking of pedantry, its not second hand fuel, its second hand fat.

I think that we in north Ireland are just into diesel much more than other parts of the uk and it must be part of our culture. Surely we invented the phrase 'Now we're sucking diesel'? Fact is so many - me included don't drive far enough to justify it anymore especially as the cars get more and more complex.
