Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - menace

First of all let me say, i have 9 years NCD and have never made any compensation claims.

I am fully comp, NCD protection, Legal Protection. I pay by monthly installments.

My premium for my 02 plate Polo in 2009 was £363. Last year it rose to £542.

I have just recieved this years renewal, a staggering £909.

I'm amazed that my insurance company are allowed to get away with this knowing fine well the economic circumstances that people are enduring.

I tried a well known comparison site and they are all dearer ! i also tried lowering my cover to TPFT without NCD and Legals and they came out at £70 cheaper, it is clearly a scam.

How can they justify this increase ?

I feel discriminated against for being a safe driver, am i alone ?

Which part of the country are you?

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - unthrottled

May I ask if you've just had a 'significant' birthday? Statistically, very..er experienced drivers are as accident prone as very inexperienced ones and premiums reflect this.

Until the ECHR waded in a couple of months ago, insurance premiums were calculated on a purely actuarial basis. Because of the distortions created by the ECHR, most people's premiums are rising. Motor insurance is a highly competitive industry and the margins are tiny.

But in all honesty, expecting insurance companies to factor in 'current economic circumstances' when calculating the cost of underwriting risk is silly.

I feel discriminated against for being a safe driver, am i alone ?

WIth the figures you quoted above, I would have to say "yes"

44 yr old male, living in Salford, Manchester.

Thanks.

One vital lesson for everybody to remember. Loyalty is over-rated. Never stick with the same company unless by some fluke or freak of nature they actually do quote the same or less than last year. Chances are signing up to the same company as a new customer it'd be considerably south of £909.

Get yourself onto price comparisons, check out Direct Line as well (if thats not who you're with) as ive found them to be quite good. If you find a good low quote for good cover give your insurance company a ring, say "well so and so will do it for £450" and quite often you'll be surprised how quickly they backtrack and offer to beat that by a quid.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - menace

I tried the comparison sites straight away, my insurer was the cheapest ?

Even tried third party fire and theft with no No claims protection, no Legal cover, that came in at £70 cheaper....how can they justify that.

We're all being robbed.

Thanks.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - unthrottled

No, we're not! Something doesn't doesn't stack up in this tale-£300-£400 would be about right for a a 46 year old with more thasn 5 years' NCD.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - unthrottled

Is this 'actual' no claims or protected no claims (which isn't really NCD at all)?

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - jamie745

Ive found quite often Comprehensive to actually be cheaper than Third Party.

Theres no getting away from it though places like Salford will be the first places the insurance companies ratchet the price up on, as unfair as it is, its how they work. I personally dont feel honest drivers with long NCD should have to pay for the fact someone down the road from them drove with no insurance. I also feel insurance companies discriminating against such areas only encourages more to drive without insurance and effectivley "locks in" the problem. I think your area has more to do with the increase than your own driving record, which again i agree is unfair. In my view they cant justify that, as insurance companies racking up prices contributes to uninsured driving and crime in itself, so they're reacting to problems which they have partly caused, and in turn causing more problems. Vicious cycle as it were.

Im 27 and in the East of england, with 8 years NCB my insurance on a 3litre Jaguar S Type automatic is £470 a year, with protected NCB, legal cover, hire car. So on that basis it makes very little sense.

Have you tried running quotes on some different cars? In my experience sometimes little hatchbacks can actually cost more to insure than something bigger, perhaps stats say they get stolen more or something.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - Armstrong Sid

Location has a lot to do with it. A few miles in a different direction can add up in a big way.

I had a 08 Focus 1.6. I'm maximum NCD, aged over 50. Where I was living in Nottingham, the lowest fully comp figure on a comparison site was £290-ish.

By putting in a slightly different Nottingham postcode with all other details the same, the lowest figure was £180. And that was literally a couple of miles down the road

There was a case recently where a woman in North London had insurance quote differences of £300 depending on which end of the road she lived.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - menace

I have over 9 years No Claims Discount.

Claim Free.

Clean License.

This is not a tale, all true facts.

Thanks for the sensible replys, seems there isn't much i can do about it.

I initially wanted to ring my insurers up but i feel i would be wasting my time.

Thanks.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - unthrottled

Still don't see £900 pa premium being plausible even if your address is 25 Cromwell Street.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - jamie745

I just run a dummy quote on directline for a 44 year old man in Salford with those details on an 02 plate Polo 1.4 and it came out at over £1200. b***** hell.

What would my Jaguar come out at up there?

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - unthrottled

What!

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - menace

Thanks Jamie, now do you see what i'm up against....unbelievable, really !

I dont mind paying the going rate for anything, but this is extortion, plain and simple.

Call me a cynic but, not too long ago us Mancunians voted AGAINST the congestion charge !......probably unrelated,,,i dont know ?

Thanks.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - jamie745

I just put myself into Direct Line (my insurance company) on my car, but moved my address to Salford and its gone from £470 a year to £2675.

And i just put me in on that Polo living where i do and it was £365, compared to the £1200+ for someone alot older than me living in Salford.

Thats quite incredible stuff. Astonishing.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - menace

I've just got off the phone with my insurer.

I was put through to the "Loyalty Team " upon seting out my grievances i was offered a discount, instead of paying £909 i am now paying £852.

Not much considering nothing has changed on my part, but better than nothing.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - concrete

menace-try swiftcover. Same boat as you last year and they came up trumps. Cheers Concrete.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - WellKnownSid

According to a computer, my nearest shops are in another country - and I would need a boat to get to them.

According to a computer I cannot possibly get broadband - so how am I using this forum?

According to a computer I have paid for my TV licence. According to the same computer, I am liable for a £1000 fine for non payment.

According to my bank's computer, I am two different people with the same name living at the same address. So they kindly send me two of everything.

According to a computer, I was not allowed to book a holiday with my family because my son would be too old when flying back. Alternatively, I was not allowed to book a holiday with my family because my son would be too young flying out.

According to a computer, I cannot even get a car insurance quote online because my driving licence is illegal.

People must remember that computers are STUPID.

I would say to the OP that there may have been some local car crime or event which marks that postcode or a nearby one as a particularly high risk.

How about trying a local high street broker (if they still exist!) that has more knowledge of the market and may be able to arrange something with a human being rather than an online search? Price comparison sites are built under the 80/20 rule, it's not commercially sound to focus on the 20% when the 80% are what makes the money.

The last time I tried a price comparison site was for home insurance - £1200 minimum, I actually pay £300... the system cannot cope with the exceptions that prove the rule.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - jamie745

I think what Sid is trying to say is, ring up your insurance company and try and negotiate it down a bit.

And maybe that Sid should get a different computer also.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - WellKnownSid

I don't think they'll negotiate a sausage, to be honest. Computer says no.

There are plenty of specialist brokers out there... things like high performance or classic cars, etc. Surely there will be local brokers, in the high street that'll be used to finding local people insurance at reasonable rates from companies that don't deal through comparison sites.

The insurers on the comparison sites will quote whatever they want if it doesn't fit their business model - which is "Mr Average" in an "average" job living in an "average" area driving an "average" car of "average" age (prob. less than 5 years old).

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - Falkirk Bairn

Renewal in the post yesterday for 4 y o X-trail - up £25 to £198 fullly comp,2 x drivers.

I tried comparison sites - cheaper by £20 but higher excesses with unknown companies. So I will just renew with Esure for 10th year in succession

Why do you do this Jamie? You've started another incoherent rant about the evils of the capitalist system.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - jamie745

Im not ranting. I just opined that it'd be interesting to see how many of Britains 34million odd vehicles would be on the road without insurance if vehicle insurance was optional rather than compulsory, and it'd be interesting to see the effects of it on the insurance company as they'd then be trying to sell a product we dont need, rather than being able to quote whatever they want knowing their good old mates in Westminster will force the public to use them anyway.

i just thought it could make for interesting figures. But clearly any post too long to fit on Twitter is deemed a "rant." As peoples attention spans are too short.

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - ForumNeedsModerating

OP - I would ask your broker what facor has loaded the premium so much - nearly 150% it seems.

One can only assume, all things being equal & your personal context not having changed, that the postcode has caused this hike. Confirm, or otherwise, with your broker, at least you'll know then & what the 'remedy' is.

It may not be a palatable idea that you might have to move to lower your premium, but if you are moving or likely too near term, maybe check putative postcodes for potential premium loadings.

(almost full house on the alliteration front there!)

Crikey Menace! That's awful! You can but argue. I use Direct Line, and I had got my insurance down to £350 on a 1.6L Focus (living in Lancaster), 1 years' NCD and only been driving a year, when I was 25. This year, bigger car, ok, but not hugely different, I'm up to 3 years NCD, but I'd moved to Preston. DL tried to get £900 off me. I phoned up and told them to stick it, they re-jigged it to £800 ish. I said NO. So I went back on, and did a quote as a new customer and I'm paying £501. Weird eh? I got a discount for my NCD, another for loyalty to DL and also a 'new' customer one by effectively reopening my account.

I'm sure there have been several discussions about the peculiar nature of postcodes and insurance. I used to park on the street in Lancaster, and in Preston I have a garage and a drive. It's still more, even though I'm living somewhere that's actually nicer.

Also @Woodbines. Awesome sentence!

Jamie, your views have been amply expounded on the unfairness of insurance weighting.

To show your commitment to your cause, why don't you share your good fortune with Comrade Menace, pool your premiums, split them between you evenly and strike a blow for égalité?

Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal - dieseldogg

Admiral were the best I could get, until I "brokered" a better deal with my local UFU office.

Well they get all our insurance business, House, combined business, multiple cars etc , ( but only after a discreet quote or two obtained elsewhere) & albeit sometimes at a small extra cost.

But they are local ( & anyway I got the hots for the senior lady there, btw, I have no reason to feel that this is reciprocated, sigh)

The "brokered" deal was a substiantial discount because I signed a paper stating that the off-spring would obey our rules in respect of car usuage.

When I was last in yer woman as above was on the phone to another customer, with a somewhat exasperated tone in her voice explaining that "fronting" was not a valid way to insure a car for a youngster,& boy was she having difficulty in getting her message across.

Jamie?

Ps

"she" blenched the year I mentioned that I liked having all the insurance under the one roof so to speak.

Cos it would simplify the claim iffen I demolished the house with the car, it was in the winter & very frosty at the time.

tee hee

How about....no. Anyway, how would that help anything? Insurance company would still get paid, resulting in another very bad day for humanity.

>I personally dont feel honest drivers with long NCD should have to pay for the fact someone down the road from them drove with no insurance.

What you're paying for here is the likelyhood of being hit by someone with no insurance, at which point your fully comp has to bear the load. If people in your area regularly do so and hit things leading to additional loss, this shows up in the actuarial analysis and your premium gets loaded accordingly.

The other option would be your insurers having a clause saying that you get to stick your claim where the sun shineth not if the SOB that hits you turns out to be uninsured.....

The root cause of the problem is that the DOT's approach of introducing ever more draconian checks and rules to combat the problem serves only to add to the costs and hassle of those trying to do things legally. Those breaking the law are just given even more incentive to do so.

Try watching the "real life" Traffic Police documentaries, it's soul-destroying: "Ah, no insurance, no tax, etc. Here's a 6-month ban to go with your existing 12-month one and another fine which we know you won't pay.". Or, in effect: "Carry on as you were....". The much-vaunted threat of having the car crushed is a Paper Tiger when the vehicle actually belongs to someone else, as it invariably does.....
