Vauxhall 1.6 VVT engine in current Astra/Zafira - Ian71

I am considering a new Astra 1.6 as a possible new car, but before I shortlist I would like to ask the backroomers if anybody out there owns one. From what I have read, the two main comments out there (on the web...) are that they are sluggish and suffer very poor fuel consumption. My current car is a 1.8 vectra estate, which we find to be OK. Also, does anybody have any experience of the 1.6 VVT (same engine) in the Zafira - it is just that they do appear to be very good value at the moment (or should I say cheap!) Any thoughts would be much appreciated - thank you

They're cheap because no one wants them when the 1.7 diesel will feel quicker and get about 25% better mileage. It'll depreciate faster than a brick off a cliff.

At about 3000RPM all naturally aspirated 1.6 petrols are much of a muchness. The performance will be adequate but not scintillating. On a run, the Astra should be good for low to mid 40s. I doubt the VVT will have any tangible benefit over the previous twinport which was a very good engine.

Thanks unthrottled. We only do about 10k per year, so diesel may not work for us - particularly with DPF issues. I agree that they are 'unloved' and tend to be hire fleet fodder, but that does not really bother me. Our current vectra falls into this category and has been a really good car to own. Big depreciation is a plus becasue we usually buy at a year or so old and keep for a while.

Ah, when you said a 'new' car-I thought you meant brand new. If the comments sounded derogatory, they weren't meant to be. I drive a 1600 petrol because, like you, I don't cover enough miles to warrant a diesel.

White I meant is that although it probably has 120hp or something, it won't feel much quicker than the older 100hp engine at normal operating speeds, the extra horsepower only coming in at 6000+RPM.

I currently own an 06 reg Astra H 1.6 twinport. It may not be the quickest car in the world, but I can get mid 40's mpg, cruising on the motorway is comfortable. I'm not sure the new Astra J would be as quicker or frugal as it's predesessor, but it would have more standard equipment.

Focuses depreciate quickly too (again because there are a lot of them about) and it's worth trying one as you might well find it better to drive. A Kia Ceed is worth a look too: quite good to drive, reasonably cheap to buy, and a long warranty.

Mondeos are even cheaper than Focuses. Kia do have the best warranty in the biz and I think Hyundai aren't far behind with 5 years...

Is the plural of 'Focus' Focuses or Foci?

I've got a classics degree but even I can live with Focuses (and premiums and Yarises)!

Not sure anyone wants the plural of premium! But if you have to have them, premia is definitely classier. ;-)
