Seat Ibiza 1.4 85PS 2011 - Engine noise. - mike w

My Seat Ibiza Chill 1.4 85PS has had from new, an unusuall noise on tickover, a light knock/rattle. The Seat tech guys at the dealer where I purchased it have listened but say there is nothing untoward. The noise comes from cam belt end of the engine. Could I safely run the engine for a few minutes without the drive belt for the alternator & aircon pump to deduce if noise comes from either of these items.?

Should be no problems provided the belt only drives the alternator and aircon.

Had a similar problem many moons ago with one of the first generation Seats (Ibiza mkI), couldnt find the cause, garage (Main Dealer) couldn't find the cause, cambelt etc had been changed at the right interval. Eventually it was traced to the cambelt idler roller bearing failing - unfortunately took out the head as well!! Equally unfortunately the garage had gone bust leaving us with no redress.

Try a screwdriver on the idler bearings whilst the engine is rinning

Thanks. Presumably I need to remove the plastic cover(s) over the cambelt area to listen with a screwdriver. My car has only done 750 miles so I'd be a bit peeved if bearings are the problem (under warranty though).

As it's so new, take it back to the dealer and get them to check it, If you have been dismantling bits yourself they could accuse you of causing the problem. Surely one of the the points of buying a new car is so you don't have to work under the bonnet?
