MINI Cooper + Cooper S - EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION - yassou

My wife bought a 56-reg Cooper S six months ago. It has now done 42,000 miles. Twice it has made an odd noise and we have discovered that it is out of oil. The first time our garage put in five litres less than the engine and oil filter holds! We blamed it on the dealer not checking before we bought the car. My wife commutes 70 miles a day and I checked the oil today - three weeks since the last time - and it was only half full. The oil warning light has only once flickered briefly (I would have expected it to come on and stay on, but that is incidental). There is no sign of an oil leak or oil in the exhaust emissions. Has anyone heard of such a problem with MINI or any other BMW engines?

Bearing in mind the capacity of the sump is about 5 litres thay couldn't have put anything in at all!

Most oil warning lights only flicker on if the pressure falls too low-by which time it is too late. If the engine has been run without oil, irreparable damage will have been done.

If the piston rings have been starved of oil then the engine will continue to burn oil until it is rebuilt.

I have 2007 mini and it is burning a lot of oil and has been for a couple years. the mini service dude told me to put in 2 quarts every thousand miles as well.

tell me, did you find any problems that caused this consumption of oil or did Mini just tell you that the car was the way it was.

Dodgy sump gasket? You won't see any leaks onto the floor when it's stationary, but it'll slosh about when you drive it and oil will escape. My cousin has a MINI Cooper and she says BMW told her that they expect that 1L of oil is used in 1000 miles!

Obv. this is just my first guess, there are some proper decent mechanic chaps on here that'll have an answer.

I've heard of lots of engien problems where owners don't check the oil in six months and then are surprised when the engine is kanckered.. Fairly common with the "cars run without attention " owners... Sometimes they are lucky.

Personally when the bill for a new engine is ££££s, two minutes a week pays for itself ...

THIS FIXED MY OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE.

BEFORE FINDING THIS FIX I HAD DONE

OIL FLUSH

STRIP DOWN CYLINDER HEAD AND DECOAT HEAD AND REPLACE VALVE STEM SEALS.

REPLACED PISTON RINGS AND DEGLAZED BORE.

FITTED THE 2 BLANKING CAPS NOW CAR SPOT ON. HOPE THIS HELPS

This technical modification is applicable on the following cars:

Stopping oil from getting into the intake manifold directly from the crankcase

The latest and greatest modification for getting rid of oil in our intake manifold, which is causing so many problems in the cylinder head and intake valves, comes from Peugeot themselves.

The new RCZ and 308GTI with the THP200 engine have a small difference in their intake manifold compared to the older models.
While the manifold body is the same, there is a very small cap that closes the rear PCV hose in the THP200 engine, which does not exist on the THP150 and 175hp engines.

PCV is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system, which forces blowby gases back (and a lot of oil coming with it) in the intake system.

This cap is very cheap and available from Peugeot (part code 0361S4 ), using it saves the trouble of having to clean your intake from oil and combustion residues.


The difference between the intake manifolds can be seen in the following pictures from Peugeot Servicebox.

Part number 8 is the cap that closes the PCV return hose from the engine to the intake manifold.

Installing the cap in THP150 / 175 engines

First remove the rear PCV return hose. Press the clip to release it from the engine cover.

Do I need just the caps put on or new rings and bore suggested?
