Mazda 5 2.0D sport '06 27000k - Mazda 5 DPF Flashing, but no power loss - gmctyphoon

Hi all, after looking & all the posts on here & other mazda forums I can tell the DPF system is fairly problematic on these & six's.

Here is my problem, I have owned the car 2 1/2 years & dont do too many miles as now work within 1 mile of home (14k in the time I have owned it).

Yesterday after going round a sharp left bend in the road (probly way too fast) the DPF light started to flash, so rang my machanic friend up who said take it for a blast on the motorway to cycle it & clear out the DPF which I did (kept it about 3000rpm for 1/2 hr) but light was still flashing. Came home & read some forums & got worried! I have checked the OIL which was changed aprox 2500k / 9mths ago & fund it about 1/2 way between the "F" & the "X" marks.

I left the car for a few hours & rechecked for the DPF light & it had gone out! Whoooooo I thought! Then this morning on the way to work going round the same bend the DPF light flashes again & is still flashing now.

I am not losing any power since the light has come on, not sure the best method to fix, my last service was not with mazda could it be the DPF is flashing as a service light? but strange it went out once, I have been having a littl bit of banging under the car which I though could be one of the exhaust rubbers stretched, could this banging of caused a failure in the dpf? could it be because the oil is over the "F" mark & is slopping/ in the sump on a sharp left? (i'll drain at the weekend anyway), or could it be something more sinester?

Any help would be appreciated.

If your oil level is above the F mark (presuming the level was correct at the last service) then your oil is contaminated with diesel fuel due to a number of failed DPF regenerations. Get the oil changed ASAP. Do not run these engines with a high oil level or you will end up with a blown engine. I'd change the oil every 5K miles/4 months on this particular model – especially if used for short journeys due to the DPF regen issue.

Essentially (given your mileage), either get a new car or change your oil regularly.

Thanks SteveLee, I guess your stance would be that the high oil is causing the DPF light to flash, when I change it (and filter) could I expect the light to go out or can only mazda do this? I read someplace that only an IDS Diagnostic tool would clear the light ( shame I have 2 friends both with a snap on diagnostic tool).

Do you or anybody else know of a trick to switch the light out in a simular way to the six (ground pin on com conection & press acc 5 times)?

Thanks

Trying to turn the DPF warning light off will not proof to be lasting, you appear to have two problems firstly an oil problem and secondly a DPF problem probably both caused by the low mileage trips. Perhaps it would be better in youir case to have the DPF removed both physically and electrically.

Morning,

I would stick to Mazda fixing this, if you play around with the system & trying to disable it - you're going to find its more hassle than its worth.

I own/owned a Mazda 6 and i had the same issue but only with the high oil which was because of diesel contamination. Im not sure about you're 2006 version but the replies above seem to be correct, the light is coming on because your car monitors for diesel dilution.

At the moment i am in a legal battle with Mazda in regards to this design because my car led to an engine run-away, a 62% diesel / oil contamination. Can't post everything on here but you've got space to argue if you've got the patience.

Let me know if i can help in any other way.

May be worth a fault code read, incase its failing to regen due to a sensor failure!

This link may help, once you have a fault code.

Well I have done an oil change & the DPF light is still flashing, I had hoped the oil had got too high was triggering the light.

My machanic friend doesnt have the ability to scan mazdas with his snap on scanner but he has a cheaper tool (cant remember name) that will scan only which he will lend me, where is the com port on the 5's?

Does anybody know if there are any tricks to reset the DPF light/ error code, as I am keen to rule out the DPF flashing as a service indicator rather than spen nearly £100 at mazda to do the same(yes I understand it could be another error, but will surly flash again if there is).

Thanks

Hi Med

The oil change was not done at mazda, & is why I would like to try & cancell the light myself, before I open the cheque book for mazda!

I had found this link to the 6 DPF reset trick which is why I thought there might be a simular trick for the 5, The fuse board on my 5 is differant to the picture as it has no relays, or 6pin port, any idea where I might find the port on my 5?

Thanks

Hi gmcvann, afternoon!

I have looked around and can't find anywhere that has a solution. There was a few posts that only mentioned, removing your battery for 30 minutes?? :S anyone care to elaborate better?

I am not a mechanic but, what I understand from checking the net, is that the DPF light on the Mazda5, as well as indicating a DPF fault, is also used as a service reminder light. Note that the handbook does tell you to reset the DPF and ECU after an oil change. This is so that car notes the new oil characteristics etc etc. From your post it would seem that this has not been done.

That leaves you the option of doing nothing (as it is only a service indicator light, and nothing seems to be wrong apart from a flashing light) OR...

You want to reset the DPF and ECU so you know when something really is wrong. Apart from Mazda themselves, I have only found that the Launch X431 tool performs the resets. I am sure there are others (E.G. Carman) but I have not seem a confirmation.

Select Mazda and scroll down to Mazda5 (Euro spec) to confirm. Your only problem now is finding a garage that has this tool or similar.

Hi! I have the same problem now. Dpf flashing.. Done my oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter change last November 2012 by a private garage.. Is it resetting of dpf and ecu can do by any mechanic or just mazda garage only.. I got mazda 5 2007 sports 56680miles.
Mazda 5 2.0D sport '06 27000k - Mazda 5 DPF Flashing, but no power loss - Collos25

Do you think it may be flashing for a reason?
Maybe its doing what it is supposed to do and tell you there is afault with the DPF.

Hi. Follow-up! My mazda 5 2007 with 56680miles, has the same problem now.. Dpf flashing light and notice lossing power(6 gear-only 50mph) just tried for 20minutes drive with more than 2000rpm, nothing happened... Changed oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter at 53865miles by private mechanic.. Read some comments that dpf appears sometime to let us know that due for service, and if service done, dpf and ecu should be resetting.. Can anyone tell me if it is safe to use my car as using for work and contacted mechanic(whom changed oil) to reset but not until Monday...please help!!! Apart from mazda, do you think private mechanic can do the resetting?

Hi All

Just joined the forum and as you can imagine I have the same fault / issue as everyone else on this thread. I am just enquiring as to whether you or anybody else have been able to get the DPF fault reset without having to go to Mazda. I have a 2007 Mazda 5 TD2 with approx 114,000 miles on it. I have tried a fuel additive in an attempt to clear the obstruction from the filter as well as pressure washing the filter itself out while using TFR (unfortunately without success). Before I start dropping the oil and running an engine flush through it, then replacing the oil I was just wondering how everyone else has got on. I've noticed that some people have already done the oil change, oil filter and fuel filter replacement without success. I have been talking it over with my machanic and we have come to the same conclusion (as has been mentioned above) the DPF light can also represent a serivce indication, or oil level issue (or oil contamination). I have a noticable loss of power but I also have an engine management light on which nobody else seems to have had (as not been mentioned above anywhere). We suspect that the engine management light being on is preventing the DPF from being regenerated during a motorway run. The previous advice I got from Mazda was that when the DPF light started flashing I needed to take the car on a run with RPM above 3000 for approx 10 - 15 mins (until the flashing light goes out). Any advice / comments would be appreciated.

Hi, Good Evening -

That link should be a standard procedure to reset the light but i think the guidelines were written for the 6.

Apologies if you have answered this above but have you had a diagnostic on your car? I hope this is not the bad sign of a BAD DPF unit! If your lucky could be your sensors....?

Hi guys!! Please need very good suggestion or honest John, honest advice, please!! My mazda 5 sport 2.0 turbo D, 64k miles, just this morning after about 3 hours drive, appears DPF flashing, engine management ant dsc light off(steady light) and loosing power, took the car to mazda dealer, it reads out DPF reading,19(don't know what they call but says normal supposedly 15),, they told me need to regenerate but goes two ways, either successful regeneration or blown away, means whole cat need to change.. Anyone can give me comments, please!!!car still in garage!!thanks

What sort of driving did you do on your 3 hour journey. Was it mainly open roads over 40mph or mostly around town. This car with a DPF won't tollerate prolonged town use & wll need a run above 40mph at least every 100 miles or so. If it is now in limp mode due to a clogged DPF it will need an emergency forced regen at the dealers. If the DPF gets destroyed in the process ( unlikely ) then cheapest way out would be to get it deleted.
