Mondeo ST24 - help with price - neverdriveavolvoman
I have been offered a Mondeo ST 24 (RSAP) 5 dr in silver with 75k - 99S FSH.

The car is 4k - does this sound reasonable to anyone - would like some help as to whether or not to go for it.

The price is extremely good. Cheapest '99 in Autotrader is over £1500 more. If it's in good condition overall, you like the idea of a fast Mondeo and you can live with the potentially high maintenance and, especially, fuel bills, yeah, go for it.

The price is right... if the car and seller are right too then you are fine. Worth an HPI, and a couple of phone calls to check out the service history (no genuine seller will refuse to tell you where/when serviced).

We have a Mondewoe 24V, older on an M reg and its a pile of rubbish. Very Very expensive to maintain £600+ for the clutch, £3.5K for the new engine!! Just cost £140 for two front "wishbones" to be fitted to pass the MOT all that was wrong was that the rubber had split. If the fan fuses go they recommend they are replaced at a main dealer. Try finding one of them when your on your hols in deepest Dorset. Thats only the start of it, now you know why I call them Mondewoe's.

Bill

ps. Its not that much faster than my old Mk2 Passat 2.0, doesnt go round corners as well and uses petrol and oil like I owned BP.

But how much of a 99S is the same car as an M reg?

Cosmetically quite different, but the engine and the body structure are the same, some minor mods to suspension settings.

Ah - I was thinking of the newer Zetec ones that HJ likes. I've just checked the car-by-car but they seem to have appeared in 2000.

The Zetec spec appeared in 98/99 I think, but the Zetec engine is the 4 cylinder, 16v fitted to all Mondeos smaller than 2.0 litres. It's a good engine, economical, reasonably fast and cheap to maintain. It was also heavily revised for the 99.5 model year (T reg and newer), or at least the 1.8 was. A 99 would be one of the later versions of the old shape, but nothing wrong with that. I think (but don't quote me) that Ford calls its latest 4 cylinder engines 'Duratec'.

Hi
I have just bought a ST24,its a 1999 T Reg with 22000 miles genuine on the clock and I gave £5999, so the ST you are looking at sounds pretty good.
but what a car to drive b***** brill I must say :-)
Bit heavy on the petrol but its worth it
Andy.

99S should have revised lower wishbone bushes that are vastly more reliable.

Check for water leaks into the rear light clusters - by unclipping the trim and feeling for a puddle in the cluster itself. Mouldy smelly interior panels and soundproofing are not nice!

Check for uneven tyre wear and or crooked steering wheel. The alignement can be significantly knocked out of tolerance if kerbed 30mph or more - needs £50 4 wheel laser alignment.

Make sure it doesnt have mudflaps fited, there will probably be no paint left behind them.

I have a 99S 1.8LX it is a good car but has depreciated hugely.

Front pads only half way down after 40k (mainly motorway)

Have a look at www.fordmondeo.org and cbc breakdown on this site.
