Honda Accord - Save £1800 on VSA modulator failure. - buzzcrow

Honda has finally issued the extended warranty for the rubbish VSA modulator
made by the ultra-NOT reliable German manufacturer. Before this TSB was
announced Honda UK as a gesture of goodwill was paying for the parts and
the customer had to pay for the labour.
Finally Honda and German manufacturer have reached a solution to this issue.

Any high mileage car will not be entertained... So anyone now has suddenly seen this issue, please contact your dealer provided you are with the time frame and mileage.

I have a Honda Accord 2005 diesel with 90000 miles on the clock. When I started the engine the other morning a triangle and the VSA warning light came on and stayed on. Took it to the Honda dealer who done a diagnostic test (£55) and told me the VSA modulator has failed and the part which you can only get from Honda is £1600+Vat+Labour. I phoned Honda UK customer centre and they said as a good will gesture I could have the part for £411+vat+Labour. I pointed out their bulletin (see above which I got from another website) but they said because my car had done high mileage this was their best offer, take it or leave it. If you have a Honda diesel from 2005 onward with less than 62000 miles get the VSA Modulator replaced for free NOW.

Not that easy mate. Honda will only let me have the part for £411+Vat if I return the failed part to them.

Forget honda remove the unit take it to a good electronics shop and they should be able to repair it I am sure you have the equivelant of Conrads or RS the parts are available repaired mine myself with no problems .

Its what most people do in Germany especially on VW/Bmw which go all the time (see HJ report)There is nothing complicated electronically with the unit normally its just a blown diode but you could rebuild the whole unit for a very reasonable amount.

I have a 2007 Accord i-cTDi with 45k miles and no problem so far.

Just to clarify the OP's comments - I assume that I am covered until 62k miles or 2013, whichever comes first, but are you suggesting that owners of cars like mine could contact their Honda dealership to have the part retrofitted even though the the problem has not shown up so far?

Below is the official Honda Bulletin given to all dealers. I don't know for sure if you can request a replacement without the fault developing as I was mereley copying an article from a Honda Accord forum but if your model is listed then you could have a failure without warning at anytime just like I did. Honda does replace it with a modified part. I was also informed that Honda covers a cracked manifild on Accord CTDI up to 124,000 miles :-

Hi

While reading into the dreaded 61-01 fault I came across your post. Do you know if there are any websites (or perhaps you have some yourself) with photos of the PCB or components that fail? I have this fault and will be repairing the unit myself as I can't justify spending money on getting it done elsewhere. The car is a 2005 model year and has racked up 227000 miles, so its done me very well so far. I have a rear left wheel speed sensor that needs repairing too and have the part ordered already.

Any info would be most appreciated.

Kind regards

I have had my Accord for 16 months having paid top dollar from an approved franchise. It was a few months out of warranty when the vas light came on. The Honda franchise advised me on the extended warranty on the vas but explained that the threshold for the mileage was 62000. Would you believe that my mileage was 1500 over that!
Believing I had a good case for goodwill, I contacted Honda customer services. They stated that they would reduce the part to £450 + vat + fitting. The franchise stated that they would reduce the labour bill but this still amounts to £690 + £50 diagnostic (+ another £50 diagnostic from a local auto electric before I approached Honda). Despite my efforts to have the work done for free they refused to budge.
As a new but loyal customer to Honda I feel terribly let down by Honda. I could understand their stance if this was fair wear n tear but this appears to be a production fault with the vehicle. I have enrolled on a 2 yr service and mot plan and would have considered a new Honda in a year or so time. It will certainly make me think again as to where to place my loyalties

As far as I'm concerned with this is that now VOSPA have included the manual activation of the VSA in the MOT Honda should be doing something about this and having a recall. My VSA light on my 55 plate came on last year and stupidly I did nothing about this as I knew it wouldn't fail the MOT but I am now having to try and get this repaired or change the car which disappoints me as I enjoy the car. I have contacted Honda to see where I stand but no doubt I will need to fork out the money.

My VSA on 56 plate failed; car had done 75000 miles so outside terms of Honda bulletin. On contacting Honda customer service they offered £500 "goodwill" payment, take it or leave it. I took it but wont buy Honda again.- so much for customer loyalty after 5 years. It's a shame because my wife and I otherwise like the car.
