Peugeot Boxer - Peugeot Boxer 1.9 - Smoking issues - Clueless?!!

Hi Guys

Hope someone can help. I have a 1998 Pug Boxer 1.9 (non Turbo) Diesel 270 SWB and on start up it has excessive greyish/whiteish smoke with a very strong smell of fuel. When the engine gets up to temp this does die down a bit but does not go away altogether. Could this be an injector fault?

If so, I also have my wifes old 1994 Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel sat rotting away with a good engine - are the injectors compatable?

Many thanks in advance and kindest regards .

Oh, I forgot to mention that it also runs very lumpy when it smokes and if you switch it off after a while it seems to get better ... then may start all over again... I'm clueless!! :(

I have exact same problem did you get a fix for this ?

This sounds like low compression causing misfiring, faulty glow plugs will cause this when first started but it should clear within a minute or so. Bluish/white smoke is unburnt fuel and as a diesel relies on good compression to ignite the fuel, if the engine has excessive bore wear or the valves are not seating properly that will give those symptoms. They can also be caused by air getting into the fuel system but it would normally be like it all the time not just when cold. The first thing you could try is changing the fuel filter.

Thanks for joining in Peter am a mech myself and this is really an oddball problem because when you start up cold and let it idle it is perfect ,it is only in the mid range rpm that the smoke starts and is clear at high rpm. I have done all the usual filters and cleaned the egr valve which gives a bit of bother on these but no luck. After a few mins running its fine !! No overheating problems or loss of coolant , I feel if it was and injector problem getting stuck the smoke would be black and not white/grey ??

Mmmm, I can only think it can be a pump timing problem, I assume this engine has partial electronic control, one injector with a lead coming from it, sounds like its retarded in mid range. All mine have fully mechanical pumps - which are a lot more reliable, so I don't know much about the later pumps. thanks again for the reply but its the bog standard mechanical system with a roto diesel pump, its a real strange one, am going to try disconnecting 1 injector at a time to see if it reduces the smoke ! what do you think ? worth a try ? its a pity clueless hasnt joined in and told us if he got a fix for his.

Oh right, I though the late ones had a semi electronic set up. I doubt the fault will be restricted to one cylinder, what does the engine sound like when its smoking? The only really strange thing I have had with a mechanical pump was on a Perkins 4/108 which had overheated, the return pipe from the pump had melted and stopped the flow of fuel and this completely upset it, just wondering if you perhaps had a restriction, long shot I know. Very odd that it only does it mid range, usually that's the bit you can rely on. I would think it must be the pump, the Bosch ones seem more reliable but if you change it you will have to change the pipes as well as the injection order is different.

I have just re read your post, its OK when it gets hot then?

yea perfect when hot and even after a few mins running . As you increase the revs there is a flat spot /misfire/bad hesitation then the smoke starts and it then clears as the revs pick up .If you hold the throttle steady at about 2000 rpm it is pumping out the smoke , I feel it has to be some type of pump or injector problem am waiting on a diesel fuel injection expert to call me to enquire if he came across this problem if he has the fix or when I find it I will post it to help others.

A fault I have not come across and I have been running diesels since 1959 including a number of conversions, hope you get it sorted, I will be interested to know the outcome.

Hi Guys, Ooops, I forgot I had posted my problem on here....

Well, still no resolve to this problem, still smokes like a trooper on start up until engine gets up to normal operating temp.

She's had a complete service, changed all filters and even poured neat Forte into the fuel filter to possibly clean lines/injectors etc. Have checked glow plugs, all ok. Poor girl does seem to be a bit down on power, although still doesn't miss a beat, just runs rough when cold and engine seems a bit noisy (almost like a knock) until she warms up.

Not working at the moment so spending lots of cash is out of the question, and cannot afford new injectors and I'm even just wondering now if head gasket has blown. What's the best way to check without spending ££££s??

Can't you tell I'm clueless

Cheers guys

A leaking head gasket will normally pressurise the cooling system and cause water loss via the vent pipe or filler cap.

I think I asked this before but what colour is the smoke, if its bluish white it could be that you have low compression on one or more cylinders and what you are seeing is unburnt fuel until the engine reaches a high enough temperature to give complete combustion, this would normally cause the engine to tick over erratically, is it smooth?

The problem is unlikely to be injectors if it stiops smoking when hot, they are almost indestructable in the XUD anyway.

I have just reread you mail 'runs rough when cold' you say, that would certainly point to low compression and misfiring as a result, could be bore wear or more likely valve clearances are tight.

I had a similar problem on my xantia 1.9td.

The bolt on the bottom pulley had worked a little loose (long after a cam belt change) allowing it to hammer the keyway out of shape and put the timing out enough to make it smoke like hell at certain revs.

I was lucky to catch it before it destroyed the engine, just had to replace the pulley and keyway.
