Two weeks ago my 2006 VW Passat 2.0 TDI sport just completely cut out on me. No warning. Engine just died, power steering went etc. Had no time to safely pull over. I shudder to think what could have happened.... head on collision and likely fatalities.

Car has 89,000 on the clock and is fully serviced. I've owned it for 12 months.

VW are being less than helpful. They have diagnosed an injector fault and quote in excess of £700 to repair. From the research I have done, I gather this is a common problem and when one injector goes, the rest are likely to follow. VW have stated "this has been known to happen." Therefore, I will not feel safe driving this car unless all injectors are replaced. Obviously the cost of this is staggering. VW are unwilling to accept this is a well known problem and are unwilling to meet any of the costs. I have lodged a complaint and am now considering reporting to consumer affairs programmes.

Can anyone offer any advice? Has anyone had this problem successfully rectified at no or minimal cost to themselves? I will never feel safe driving that car again. I and others could have died. I will also never buy VW again.

I have a similar problem with my VW PASSAT 2.0 SE TDI 56 plate. three months ago it came up with engine management light and i took it to VW and having done the diagnostics done they told me there is some electrical circuit issue and it might just go if u drive so i did and week after it got cut off in the middle of the road and nearly escaped a fatal collision. i took it to a local dealer as vw was too far away from where i broke down. he charged me £1100 for changing injector #3, battery, wiring loom and labour and kept the car for 4 weeks.

Now i have been to the same garage for 3 times with the same problem and now given up as hes just meesing me around and problem still being the same.

Last month i took it to the same VW dealer and they said we'll diagnose it and let you know what the problem is and then if u agree, we'll fix it. So as arraged they called me week after telling me there is fault with your wiring loom and thats needs replacing and will cost £280 so i agreed on assurance that it would resolve the problem. Advisor also mentioned that injector #1 also showed up but we've checked it and that is working fine so i said go ahead and do it so i would have a bill of £50 diagnostic and £280 for repairs but 3 days later they rang me up saying oh car is mis firing and it appears that u need a new injector replacing #1. it will cost me another £800 towards the total bill.

Now this is outrageous i dont know where to go frm here as i dont turst if i spend this £800 and 2 weeks down the line im up for this same problem again.

Is this normal for dealers to tell customers repair cost in this manner or can i make any complaint for them to stick to their original word.

Can any one offer any suggestions if been though similar situation.

All these problems on a four year old car.On the tech forum ford with their auto gearbox problems.And also very little help from their dealers.Injectors should last longer should't they?Is it to do with fuel, poor quality or what.A Passat is not a cheap car and VW where always so reliable.I can understand how you feel and a lot of money to pay.I am not surprised you lose trust.It took three days for them to ring you about the other problem and the extra cash.They should have said we do the repairs for the original money what was agreed with you for the repair bill.No wonder people are buying more cars from the far east.

They fixed my 2.2 Avensis for £603 against the £3000 quoted price from a Toyota main dealer. They will reprogramme your injectors and test them to specification standards. They also participate in a swap system whereby you do not pay the full price for a new injector, you are provided with a recondition spare. They do all the recovery for the vehicle and are quite happy for you to go round their premises looking at the benchwork being carried out on injectors and fuel pumps. I met the guy who repaired mine and he was a thorough professional with pride in his work.

I don't work for them or canvass in any way, but I refuse to see people ripped off by main dealers, as I have been down that road.

Hi I have just had the same problem on my 06 plate TDI Sport, I took the car to the main Dealer who said if it was under 100,000 miles and had a "full" service history then VW might show some goodwill........car has 98300 miles with full history but 2 of the last ones were vw specialst not main dealer....They first said VW would not pay due to service history but the next day they called me to say vw were going to pay 100%.. Car is now ready to collect. I am going to get rid of it now as if the other 3 go I cant see VW paying for them and I cant afford £3,000.00

Dont take no for an answer VW are aware of the fault .....

Thought I would update you all.

So it will be 5 weeks on Monday since I've been without my car. VW have been wholly unhelpful and there have been numerous mis-communications between VW UK and the VW garage it was recovered to. Either that, or, they've just been stalling me. 101 phonecalls back and forth, and eventually they come up with an offer of paying 80% of the cost of replacing the 1 faulty injector. They point blank refuse to replace all 4 as they say the other 3 are not faulty. They refuse to accept that subsequent failures are likely and that when the next one goes it could kill me. To say I am furious is an understatement.

I did manage to speak to a different case manager at VW one day and this person alluded to there being a soft recall on this very fault in Germany. Does anyone have any information on this? The person also told me that they had authorised all 4 injectors being replaced in another case. My case manager refuses. He did ask if I wanted my case to be transferred to this other person. I said yes. Oddly though, this has never happened and no-one will let me speak to the person who alluded to the soft recall. What is going on? VW say they think they're being more than generous in offering an 80% contribution and they say that other injectors going is merely 'heresay'!

I'm really keen to find out any information about what's going on in Germany if anyone can help? If there is indeed a soft recall there, then I believe under European Law I should be entitled to the same treatment.

The vehicle is four years old and VW have no liability unless you can show this is a general manufacturing fault (as was the case in other models - such as some Mercedes E Class).

But I have researched this and I do not believe you can prove that there was any generic defect in the vehicle.

You bought the vehicle a year ago which means you are outside the "easier" six month ambit of the Sale of Goods Act whereby a claim might be possible against the dealer.

Furthermore you can show no evidence of failure for the other three injectors because they have not failed I don't believe you will be successful in demanding they are replaced.

It seems to me that an 80% contribution as offered by VW is an exceptionally good deal given the age of the car and the circumstances of the failure.

You should not expect you to do nearly as well in court.

As Lucy says, this looks like a reasonable offer. I suggest you accept it, get the car repaired and then flog it as you have clearly lost confidence in it.

Unless you do a very high annual mileage, I'd suggest you go for a petrol engine for your next car: there are too many horror-stories like yours of high-mileage diesels suffering expensive failure.

Older diesel engines (such as Peugeot-Citroen XUD, VAG PD 1.9 and of course the good old Perkins Prima) rattled on forever, but consumers demanded less noise. vibration and harshness and the added complexity of modern diesels has given refinement at the expense of durability.

We've bought our VW passat TDI 2006, bright new, paid for it about £18,000 , it has only 30,000miles on the clock.

As we went for our Christmas Holidays with our 9 years old son, the car stopped working suddenly.

We were lucky that we were driving in the country lane and there was no traffic, just hedges, because the speed went from about 40mph to 0mph.

The computer showed us "engine failure", we called the VW assistance and they said that it is the fuel injector failure. We were told that to replace it is about £900 and could be more if there are more than one injectors faulty as there is four of the, also there may be the wiring involved as well.

We are not able to pay this amount of money especially now when there is the recession and my husband is out of work and I am the only person working.

Also in our opinion this car is a death trap, as you do not know when it will stop.

If it happened on motorway, there would be a crash.

I wonder how did you sort out your problems with your car.

There could be some important issues arising from the failure of these injectors - time will tell as more fail and the facts emerge.

The problem seems to be with the Siemens piezo injectors - the old Bosch PD solenoid driven injectors were reliable, if not as fast. Piezo injectors require a high voltage with polarity reversal to actuate them. It appears that a common failure mode of these injectors is a short circuit to earth.

Conjecture at the moment, but if there was only one high voltage inverter in the ECU to provide the drive voltage for these injectors, it would have to be designed to shut down in the event of a short to earth. One injector earth fault = sudden stop in the fast lane.

VAG are clearly under great pressure to reduce costs and Bosch are a premium-priced supplier (but usually a good one). On several previous occasions, VAG have been caught with trousers lowered by seeking and using cheaper alternatives to Bosch equipment.

Changing PD engine tandem pumps from Bosch to LuK cost them a recall, and the change from Bosch to Teves Mk60 ABS/ESP controllers has caused owners much misery with little help from VAG. I would guess that the change to Siemens from Bosch for diesel injectors has followed the same lines and has given rise to the same result.

Good quality components require careful development by experts in the relevant field - which costs money. VAG please note.

Well Lygonos, None of my Citrëons have broken down in 300K+ miles of motoring nor have any of my Jags which have racked up similar mileages over the years - two supposedly unreliable marques! ;-) yes the French cars in particular have had niggly problems but they've always got me home. The Jags I've owned over the last 15 years have been practically fault free.

Hi, the reason your car cuts out is actually a safety feature believe it or not. The piezo injector uses low voltage to excite piezo crystals within the injector. However it uses a 12v pulse to open the injector, then another 12v pulse to close them.

If the injector or any wiring fails between these pulses, the the injector will stay open and will continue to inject fuel, filling the cylinder and potentially causing serious engine damage.

The ECU shuts the fuel pump down to stop this happening, unfortunately this causes the engine to stop. I agree it is not a great idea but better to stop the engine and only need an injector than blowing the engine.

The reason these injectors were used is the controlability to reduce DPF faults and lower emmissions.

I know this is no conselation but i hope this makes things clearer.

I have had a similar experience with my 2007 2.0 tdci ford focus (70000 miles) and the fault is quite common on modern diesels and not unique to VW or Ford. The parts that fail are usually shared components common to all makes and models. It may not be the case with your VW but the root cause can be premature wear in the fuel pump which contaminates the fuel with small metal particles that slowly wreck the injectors and can even wreck the whole engine if left, tell tale signs are metal fragments in the fuel filter but they are hard to see and not all 'monkeys' would notice during a service. I have just had mine priced up: 4 x injectors £269 each, pump £598, filter £26.57 and new fuel pipes £27 each. There is also labour of course which includes decontaminatating the whole fuel system. Total bill will be about £2600.

I have owned my 2006 Passat 2.0 TDi (140) (70,000 miles) for about 4 months. I took it to a local VW garage for an investigation of an airbag fault warning. Along with the airbag fault, the VW garage said that they also found "a fault stored with the injectors" on the ECU and strongly advised that I have all 4 injectors replaced. Total cost £1,955!
So my little trip to the VW garage has ended up with a potential bill of nearly £2,400. Ouch! and just after Xmas too!
I refuse to pay that kind of money on a less than 5 year old car so I'm taking it to my local garage, whom I do trust, to see if they can help. Will let you know what they come up with.

I suspect this is no more than a faulty injector loom/connector. This is a known issue on PD engines. On earlier engines it leads to rough running/intermittent cutout. Maybe on newer versions the ECU is programmed to cutout.

I have noticed a tendency in VAG cars - as newer models come out, the ECU's are being programmed "if theres a fault - just cut out - don't bother resetting - force owner to dealer to collect ££££"

Years ago it would have be at worst - go into some form of limp home mode until the ignition is switched off - then reset and try again - the (intermittent) problem probably has gone away.

As time goes on, I am sure manufacturers / dealers / EU regs are trying to screw us all.

There are fundamentally significant differences between the old solenoid PD injectors made by Bosch and the later piezo injectors made by Siemens.

Solenoid injectors work at low voltages and moderately high currents and only require short circuit protection (overcurrent sense) for safe operation. This can easily be acomplished for each injector, so that an engine with a shorted injector (or wiring) will run on its remaining cylinders.

I suspect this is not the case when an earth fault occurs with piezo injectors controlled by the Siemens ECU - but we shall see. The Americans won't like it if a single fault of this nature shuts down an engine and will probably quite justfiably take action. Our spineless VOSA will do nothing.

I agree that PD engines are prone to injector loom failure (within the engine) as they get older but again, with a Bosch solenoid system it merely causes a misfire. Replacement is relatively cheap.

To the very best of my knowledge, all 1.9 PD engines use Bosch solenoid injectors and all 4 valve 2.0 PD engines use Siemens piezo injectors. Perhaps someone who knows for sure, or has an hour or so to spare to check in EKTA could confirm this. The Siemens injectors are easy to spot as the connector orientation is different and they have 2 fixing bolt holes. Clearly, the 4 valve head is drilled for the 2 hold-down bolts required by the later injectors.

This applies regardless of the HP rating of the engine concerned because the change of injectors was instigated by a change from Euro III to Euro IV emissions standards - which the solenoid injectors could not easily meet in the highest powered variants.

As suggested above, there may have been some anti-Bosch bean counting involved too...

I own a Mk5 Golf TDI GT sport. I too have issues and they seem related, the GT sport shares the same motor as the Passat. Mine stopped suddenly recently, The problem seems to point to the loom powering the injectors, my mechanic said the insulation hardens and cracks causing the wires to short or earth out, this may or may not damage the injectors, but is clearly an issue with the loom used in the Diesel. I believe that VW have a major problem. I doubt very much they will admit to it. I am looking at a AUD $8,500 bill. (Its curious that there is a standard replacement kit for the diesel that consists of a loom and 4 injectors.)

My 2005 A3 had the early 140PS unit, this had the same solenoid injectors as the 1.9. The 2.0 170 is fitted with the piezo system fitted to the VAG V6 diesels.

I dont think this is correct, 2.0 TDI 140 engines had the standard Bosch non-piezo injectors, the 170 BHP variants had the Piezo units as far as I know. At least this is true for Audi, maybe the Passat is different.

After having a Passat 1.9TDI (2002) for 5 years, I was so impressed with its practicality, economy and reliability, I had no two thoughts, but to buy another Passat. A fantastic working horse. In the Baltics the car has to deal with poor road conditions, winter temperatures of up to -30C and summers with +35C. The Passat has been great.

I decided to heed caution expressed by friends and was stunned to find this thread confirming serious problems. I express my deepest sympathy with those whos familys have suffered both emotionally and financially.

Reading the threads many have decided to sell their vehicles not wanting to risk further expense or the safety of their familys. I would probably do the same, but where do you think vehicles that nobody wants will end up? Most probably in countries where awareness of such problems will be low and where consumers have less possibility to gain support or compensation from VW. So, the Baltic States is a prime target!

As I see no threads from other Passat model owners, I can only presume that the problem is only with vehicles with the 4 valve 2.0 PD engines using the Siemens piezo injectors. Do any of the other models have any problems to look out for?

I have been offered an import from Germany, 2007 Passat 2.0TDI, but do not know if it is the PD engine version. How can I tell if it is an original PD or a CR engine? Can this be checked by the vehicles numbers / data? Or do I have to lift up the hood - bonnet and visually inspect the engine? Do you have a picture to show the difference?

What if the injectors have been replaced, will I still be able to identify that it is an unfortunate PD model?

Wonder if anyone can help vw passant coolant leak.. Last week my STOP ! Check Coolant Level alarm came up, so checked it and it was low. Topped her up and carried on. Four days later - happened again (I do about 80 miles a day). Topped her up, and this cycle continues ..... Removed the cover from the bottom of the engine bay after running her up the road. The leak is dripping off the front passenger side (Right Hand drive car) axle area. It would appear that the coolant is only dripping on the back part of the cover ? Can anyone help me please !!!!!!!!!

Problem with piezo unit-injector on VW Passat is very common. The reason for this is VWs manufacturing bug.

Guys in Tehnomotive successfully repair VW piezo unit-injectors for the last year and a half. You can find them at the www.tehnomotive.com. Price for repair per unit-injector is € 250.

I am a customer of xxxx. On 18/09/2009, my car’s engine (VE55 NVH(Passat)) stalled while i was driving. AA towed my car to xxxx, a VW Service Centre. They said that injector number 2 was faulty and was needed to be replaced. When I asked the why the car wouldn’t start because if one of the injectors isn’t working, the car wouldn’t have any power. The answer was that in this car, if one of the injectors isn’t working, there is no chance that you will start the engine. I didn’t have any other choice than telling them to change the injector and I paid £917.46 and they said it was for a two year warranty. On 21/09/2010, my engine stalled in exactly the same way as it did the first time. I called AA breakdown and they found no fault codes stored and they suspected a fuel system fault. The AA person started the engine using car cleaner and advised me to go to a garage to diagnose. On 22/09/2010, I sent my car to the garage to get the problem diagnosed. They weren’t able to find anything. On 25/01/2011, the engine stalled in exactly the same way for the third time. I wasn’t able to start the engine again so I called AA and the person checked the car and he thought that the fuel pump was faulty. He towed my car to the same centre and when I asked them when they can find out what the problem with my car was, the manager of customer services said ‘Probably today or tomorrow at the latest’. I waited for a call that evening and I also waited the next morning but nobody called me. At midday on 26/01/11 I went over there and talked to the manager he said that they would try to fit it in the queue – what he didn’t tell me the day I took the car there. They didn’t do it again on the 26th so I went there in the evening but he said that they tried their best (but they didn’t do anything). I had to go again in the morning on the 27th and they said that there weren’t any places free. I went there again in the afternoon and he said that they will tell me later. When I went in the evening on the 27th, he said that they had the report and he said that injector 4 was faulty and that the engine speed sensor may need that as well. When I asked if they removed the injectors, he went inside and came back 10 minutes later saying that they weren’t removed and were all in place. When I asked him how they found the problem, he told me with a computer however when they diagnosed the injector number 2, they said that a computer won’t tell if the injector is faulty so they would have to remove them one-by-one to see if one them was faulty. When he told me that it cost nearly £1400, I told him to leave the car how it originally was because I would go and pick it up the next morning. He told me that I needed to go later because they would have to put parts back. When I went in the evening to pick up the car, I went inside to talk to the staff and make the payment (£85) and my brother came with a van to tow my car and he was waiting for me outside. He saw the staff driving my car out of the garage. He heard that the engine was making an unusual noise so he came inside and told me that they started the car and they drove out of the garage but the sound of the engine was unusual. So then I went out as well and I heard the engine making a noise that it had never made before. When I asked him how they started the engine and why it was sounding like this, he said that when they removed the parts and put them back together, the engine started. For the noise, he said the injector was faulty. I told him that the car was not like this before because the engine did not start, however it never made that noise. He said that I should be happy that the engine is even running. I said to him that when I took the car there, it wasn’t in that state but when they couldn’t find the problem like last time, they asked the maximum amount of money that was needed which would cover nearly two injectors. They asked for enough money to cover anything that would need fixing even though they didn’t know what the problem was. When they understood that I was talking the car elsewhere, they did something wrong to that injector. I told him that I was going to write a complaint e-mail to the CEO of VW and explain everything. Secondly:

This sounds like an example of sheer dealer incompetence coupled with a dubious fuel system design - I assume it's a late PD with Siemens piezo injectors.

Get the car to a good independent with the relevant knowledge and experience.

I would suggest that the long term prospects for trouble free running of a car fitted with these piezo unit injectors are very poor. You might wish to reconsider continued ownership of this vehicle.

I've had 2 incidents with injector failure where the car has died in the last 3 months. The first incident put me in a very dangerous position which was on the M6 in November at rush hour. i just about made it to the hard shoulder as the car slowed to a halt. the 2nd last weekend on a busy A road, but i was able to turn down a side road before total loss of power. The heater plug warning light flashes warning you of an issue then the message appears on the dash 'garage, engine fault'.

My 56 170 DSG has just short of 150k with full VW service history, I've had both injectors replaced at independent garages due to the cost and following reading threads on here i decided to contact VW to express my dissatisfaction and to explain how injectors failing without warning and cutting the engine can lead to a serious compromise in safety, not just for me and occupants of my vehicle but others road users around me in the event of failure.

I think it makes a difference how you speak to these people as my experience of VW customer service has been quite good. i explained my situation calmley and concisley explaining i thought they were putting lives in danger and i wondered what VW were doing about it. Following about 5 mins on hold he came back and made me an offer to have the 2 remaining injectors replaced 100% free of charge, at a VW retailer of my choosing. All i needed to do was visit the retailer book the car in and if they had any issues quote the case number that they gave me.

The customer service guy did say that had i gone to VW initially and had the parts replaced then there was a strong chance that i would have received a refund, however having gone to independent dealer he thought that and kind of goowill gesture was unlikely. Still to be a categorical no but i'm in discussion with a case manager.

It was also explained to me that they will replace injectors on vehicles under 155k if the vehicle has a full VW SH.

I think the key is to talk to them as people, in a way the shows you are concerned about safety aspects more than your own wallet.

I have a VW Passat variant with an engine of 2.0cc and 170 HP, with about 150.000 kms and over two years old(out of warranty), that is experiencing a lot of problems in the injectors as well as electronic(we know that those problems are affecting a lot of 2.0 with 170hp cars).

I have been stopped twice in the highway for the same motive, injectors, in two months and now we have to send the car again to maintenance with injectors problem.

It is the 5th VW car that one of our board members have and it is hard for us to accept the explanation of your importer that those problems are "sporadic failures".

In that sense, we have expose the situation to the importers asking VW to assume the cost of the involved parts, or at least a part of them but also and mainly, to understand the cause and be sure that the problem was solved.

VW do not accept the complain.

This happened in Portugal and I would like to know if they are accepting the complains regarding to injectrs in other countries.

I’ve been thinking about buying a Passat in the next few weeks, looking at 2006-07 170bhp SEL, but having seen a lot of posts about the injector problems I’m not so sure now, would someone know what % of cars suffer from this problem, I mean there is a lot of cars out there with the same engine, the problem with internet is that people are more likely to make a post when there is a problem rather then making one when the car is running great. Are you happy with your Passat other then the said problem? Is it nice and comfortable to drive, are there any other issues I should look out for when buying, if I get one it will be from a dealer and with full VW service, btw.

They have had a meeting today with regards to this issue as it seems to be affecting anything with a 170 engine judging from the reports they have been getting. They want as many people as are affected to step forward and file a report to see how widespread the issue is and officially who's affected by this. They will be contacting VAG shortly and it will take up to 6 weeks to get an official response.

Let's see them make an excuse to VOSA about FASH now, (if FASH made any difference, we wouldn't have people asking like beggars for goodwill gestures, or getting the fault in the first place!)

Please please please get other people involved, on other forums or someone you know may have been affected. Even you guys that have had the injectors swapped, please file a report, it takes 2 minutes online and can help everyone.

I (we) are not after free injectors, I couldn't care less about them at this point. The fact Audi/VAG are STILL letting people drive around with a ticking timebomb IS EVERYONE'S PROBLEM. If they don't sort this problem out and get away with it, they'll be more inclined to sweep other "coincidences" under the rug too.

Last week it happened to our 56 plate 73K 170CS Passat TDI on the M40. The AA towed the car to my non-dealer VW garage who said it was No 2 injector. I called VW after hearing what it would cost to replace one and also to replace all four which was recommended and made sense to me given the dangerous nature of an injector fault on this car. VW have been very responsive. First offer was that VW would pay 70% towards fixing No 2 injector. I came back asking about the safety of the other three. They responded that they would change all four - again at the rate of 70% covered by VW. I carried on and said I wanted 90% and to my delight they then said they would cover the whole lot. My advice is take the car to the dealer direct - that would have saved me £150 for the diagnostic and the new loom that was fitted as part of the diagnosis - plus the cost of an additional non AA tow to the dealer. Clearly they now see this as an issue that is down to VW.

I have to say that the customer service I had was excellent. No shouting just calm and polite - they were courteous and professional throughout.

This is such an outrageous piece of non safety design, I wonder if VAG are bending over backwards in order to avoid litigation or VOSA action - if VOSA ever get it all together?

Relatively few engines are affected as it was only the last of the PDs which used these Siemens injectors - later engines were common rail.

Perhaps the bullying VAG are in danger of becoming a victim of their own trading practices - and now know it...

Great pictures 659. And I can see why the injectors are so expensive given the complication of them, and the fine tolerances that must be involved. I didn't realise that they needed the lever system in order to move the actuator enough. It looks quite a fragile setup and doesn't bode well for longevity.

I suppose that the people at Siemens will be trying to re-design them to increase reliability.

The PD engine is dead now - killed by its inability to fuel the DPF for soot burnoff when the engine exhaust valves are open.The injector cams cannot provide fuel at this point in the engine cycle.

It's a great pity because apart from the "glitch" of the poor "cost-improved" unit injectors from Siemens, the PD was the only diesel with a reliable fuel system using oil lubricated pump plunger followers. Without a DPF, it was also the most efficient.

There will be no further PD development and thus no further work on this system at Siemens - they will be concentrating on making their monster piezo stack CR injectors work properly. These don't use any levers but have a large number of elements to achieve the required needle lift.

It's a matter now of damage limitation only for the unlucky owners of 16v 2.0 PDs.

Just had another two go at 100000k going up Westgate Bridge extremely dangerous place to happen.
Lucky have extended warranty VW will only replace the two that have gone but apparently if one goes under original warranty they will now replace all four.

Any way have traded it on another make it has also had several other problems

I also own a VW Passat 2.0 TDI Sportline 2006, that started giving me problems with the injectors in March 2010.
The first one broke in March 2010 with 105000 km
I had a great discussion with VW to obtain a total contribution, but they only gave 70%.
In March 2011, (148000 km) a second injector "died", I got back 70%.
When I got the car I noticed that the engine was vibrating when accelerating.
They tried to find the fault for 17 days, replaced the flywheel, the clutch a diesel pump (tandem), but the problem remained.(paid about 1800€, with 20% discount)
I got the car, drove 30 km and a third injector "died" ..

I returned to the garage and forced the replacement of two missing injectors. (again 70% VW participation)
Now it seems that finally the car is okay, the vibration disappeared.
I advise those who have vibration engine after replacing one defective injector, to force VW to replace all the injectors before they start to replace parts, trying to "find" the solution for the vibrating problem. In my case It seems that when injector went down the rest were affected.

The earlier 1.9 PD engines which were fitted with Bosch solenoid injectors would run relatively happily on 3 cylinders. These earlier solenoid injectors themselves are almost 100% reliable, but the wiring loom within the engine is poorly specified and sometimes fails o/c on one injector.

It seems that a drive for improved performance (smoke) and reduced costs led VAG to adopt the Siemens piezo injectors for the later PD engines. Unfortunately, it also seems that these injectors fail short circuit to ground which causes the HT supply in the ECU to shut down. This results in no drive to any of the injectors.

Just what you want in the fast lane.

I have a suspicion that VAG realised that their piezo PD system had zero reversionary capability before they tried selling these engines in the USA - so all of the PD engines sold there were fitted with the old 8v head and the Bosch injectors. Would anyone care to verify this?

VAG know very well from the Audi debacle in the USA that their transport authorities have teeth - used effectively against non-US imports as the Toyota saga has also demonstrated. Presumably they had no stomach for another run-in over the Siemens PD injectors, choosing instead to stick with the proven Bosch system.

I can only advise everyone in the UK to keep kicking VOSA in the remote chance that they might just do something effective - but I've a horrible suspicion that by taking a softer line with their customers, VAG may get away with it. The PD engine is now obsolete, so this particular problem will eventually go away.

I have had the same issue on my 56 plate Passat 2.0 TDI SE (60k). On Tuesday the engine just cut out while doing 50mph on the A57 Snake Pass outside Sheffield - not a great place to suddenly lose power although at least it wasn't a motorway...

The AA took me to the VW dealer who diagnosed a failure on injector number 3 and quoted me £868 to replace this.

Seeing the number of comments on the internet generally and this forum in particular, I spoke to VW customer services that afternoon on 08000833920 and explained to them that I was very disappointed that this had happened due to the danger to myself and other motorists, and that it appeared to be a relatively common issue. I asked them what they intended to do about this issue. I was very polite and calm with them, after reading through some of the comments above, this appears to be the approach to take to get results.

I must echo the poster above who said they were very polite and professional - excellent customer service manner from the two advisors I spoke to.

They recommended that I speak to the dealer first to see what they could offer me in way of assistance towards the cost of the repair and if I was dissatisfied, to come back to Customer Services. The dealer offered me 20% off initially and so I went back to VW to say that I didn't feel this was enough, and that I had major concerns about the other three injectors and my safety (and wallet!) if they went down.

Good news is that I have now (Thursday) just had a call from the dealer to say that VW have been in touch to say they will cover 100% of the cost of the repair *and* they will replace the other 3 injectors for free for me.

Needless to say I am pretty satisfied with the result (although looking at 659's posts it looks more like a design issue so the replacements may not put me 100% in the clear of a fault occurring again), but it looks like VW are taking this very seriously now - there was no quibbling at all from VW. If you have a similar issue then definitely go to Customer Services and explain the situation and I suspect you will get a result.

For all that though I am now going to fill in a VOSA form as well...

Same thing happened to me in my 56 plate Passat 2.0 TDI SE (75k) Friday night rush hour 6th May on a busy A road. Complete loss of power including breaks and steering and the now familiar message of "Engine Fault, Garage".

It was really scary - I thought someone was bound to come round the bend and smash into the back of me.

Unlike some I managed to restart my car on the third attempt and made it home. When I next tried to set off it took 2 goes to start the engine and then everything failed after travelling 2 yards. I couldn't restart it then and didn't intend driving it anywhere anyway.

I called the AA man and the car started first time! However it was making an odd whining and clicking noise in idle so he agreed to tow it to the VW garage.

In the meantime I read through all of your really helpful comments messages....

It was no surprise when the garage informed me that injector number 3 was faulty and needed to be replaced at a cost of £800, although they did offer to reduce the labour costs from £80 to £60 per hour.

I have told them to do nothing until I have spoken to customer services, as advised in this thread. I will try to be as polite as possible and hope that they will agree to replace all four injectors for free.

I will then sell the Passat ASAP and buy a Subaru legacy, I think.

I will definitely fill in a report for VOSA.

My 57 plate passat SEL 170 died on the A34 on Fri night. It was the same story: engine cut out, loss of power and warning light on the dash. Very dangerous as overtaking at the time and when the power dies there is nothing to tell the car behind you that you are about to slow down so much squealing of brakes behind me.

I had it towed to Breeze VW in Poole yesterday and explained that I thought it was an injector problem. I called them today to find out what was wrong and they told me that it was an injector problem and they had ordered a new one and would fit free of charge as a good will gesture (they stated that my last service with quickfit was early so my earlier 2 services counted as full VW history).

I asked them to pause while I called VW customer services (number in one of the posts above). I asked them if a) replacing 1 injector was likely to result in others failing and b) had Siemens adapted the design and were new injectors modified to make them safer. The VW rep stated that the injectors had been re-designed, as had wiring loom, so the new one on order would be different from the other three. I asked about compatibility and she said that she would refer to a case manager to assess the possibility of replacing all 4 injectors with the new 'safer' version. I asked her about likely hood of getting a full replacement and was strongly recommended to wait for the case officer to call (she asked me to read between the lines...? but I infer that there is a strong chance that VW will cover a full replacement). The dealer servicing department is now waiting to hear from the case manager.

I will update you on progress but it seems that VW are taking this very seriously and are prepared to bend over backwards to help. In the first instance the dealer was going to mend it outside of warranty, despite the fact that I did not buy the vehicle from them and had no dealing with them before yesterday. I suspect that means that VW have issued some direction to their servicing departments, which in turn suggests acceptance that there is a VW fault and the injectors are not fit for purpose. I will let you know how I get on.

Quick update - VW dealer called to say that VW would cover 100 % of the cost of replacing all 4 injectors. I called the garage to confirm that the replacements are of a new design and have a different part no. On that basis I will keep the car but might buy extended warranty just in case anything else major goes wrong! In summary, call VW and explain. They will be reasonable and sort you out. I am happy with the outcome and my faith in the company is somewhat restored (I still broke down dangerously with my kids in the car)... Regards, Rich

VW Customer Care agreed to cover the full cost of all 4 injectors.

The VW Garage Service Department were surprised by this, and I therefore suspect that they have not grasped a full understanding of the impact of this problem.

They will give me a years warranty on the replaced parts.

They also found an electrical fault in the handbrake (I have been telling them for years that it wouldn't release properly and the car rolled away twice!) and an electrical fault in the steering lock, which could also apparently cause sudden severe problems when driving.

So the Passat doesn't seem to be the safest car in its class after all and a lot of things are more reliable than a VW.

I had the new injector fitted in September, same one failed two weeks ago, still waiting for it to be sorted as Audi want to have a second look at the car.

The suffix "X" on a VAG part number signifies a re-worked old part supplied as a service replacement.

So, same old rubbish re-worked. Nice people to do business with.

My 56 reg 170 SEL DSG 133k miles Passat cut out last night ! Rac gave 2 codes 4160 and 8518.

I've read this thread and initially have taken cover off to expose loom /injectors. Could it just be the loom at fault as RAC man said they were prone to fatigue or is it probably an injector? Do i need to install a new injector loom before diagnostics can detect which(if any) injectors are faulty?

Have a 56 plate Passat 2.0 TDI SE 140. Only two weeks old, yesterday driving along the M5 and in middle lane, cut out... nearly hit a Mini in the process. Was a really scary experience and did not sleep much on the night. I've been on the phone to VW customer services today, see what they come back with.

I am on the motorway each day so realy worried about the safety and integrity of the car. Leaving myself and other motorists at risk.

Have all VW Service history, last one done at 93.3k now it has 110k and 2 years was up 4 weeks ago before I brought the car for the next service.

Really frustrating thing is only three days after having the car, novelty not wearing off, wanting it all perfect etc, I called VW Wolverhampton and spoke to a guy whom appeared to be genuine and not wanting to rip me off for a dealer, I asked for service and he said if the service light is not on and I still had 3000 miles to hit the 20000 miles so leave the service for a bit. I hope this does not count against me, they say all calls are recorded!

I'd have glady booked it in for a service otherwise to comply with the policy.

I have paid £25 to get diagnostics done at local garage, VW will not take any notice of this. Paying £80 to get toed tomorrow (AA only do it once!) and VW charge £49 for diagnostics!

I brought the car to save on fuel costs and reliability, my whole buying experience has gone out the window.

I brought the car to save on fuel costs and reliability

1/ We are now at the point where the repair costs of dervs exceed savings on fuel consumption, once the car is outside of manufacturers warranty. I'm now advising people to buy petrol rather than derv if the car will be owned outside of the warranty period.

2/ If you want reliability buy Japanese or Korean. Yes I know each marque will have the odd car with problems but by & large .....

VW customer services are swapping all four injectors over! :)

Really pleased with response/customer services. Although not had car for nearly a week (bank holiday inbetween did not help) but got the result I really wanted.

All I did was take into VW Dealer get diagnostics done, await results and then ring customer services like other people on here.

I have questioned the dealer on parts and he has said brand new parts and not refurbs, with years warranty

Hi all,

Really pleased to say VW are replacing all 4 injectors for me free of charge!

I took it into the dealer for diagnostics and then dealt with vw customer services as per earlier posts.

To be honest the customer services team have been fantastic!

It was the 3rd injector that went, and I requested all 4 changed. Brand new parts being used with a 2 year warranty (1 year labour)

Oh dear ..... I've just bought a 07 A3 2.0TDI 170 and within a week experienced exactly what has been described here. I too was driving along when the engine cut out without warning with the glowplug light flashing and I nearly had a head on crash. The car simply won't start and a code reading from the breakdown chap showed a fault code of 08518.


Even worse was the fact my heavily pregnant wife started labour a few hours later and required an emergency c-section, luckly I still had my other older A3 which I used to get to the hospital but I dread to think what would have happened if this had occured during my dash to hospital.

If the engine suddenly loses power, it is highly inconvenient. It is not deadly. If you can't safely control your vehicle in the event of power loss you shouldn't be on the road.

yes, I have suffered from throttles that have stuck open and total power loss. In both cases I retained control of the vehicle.

I was very interested to see thread... the same thing has just happened to my 08 reg Passat TDI 170 with 80k miles.. its an amazing car if it werent for this issue.

My car come to a stop (with my wife driving, 3 kids and my mom) no issues as on a b-road. The RAC came out and diagnosed the problem as an injector fault. It was recovered to Windrush in Slough who said if it meets certain criteria they will cover the cost as goodwill... note: its not a recall. The criteria is below 100k mile and full VW service history.

I had a call yesterday from the lovely lady at Windrush who said they will cover 100% of the cost - hoorah! The wiring loom and piezo injector. They did however say they only will change the faulty injector, not the others, hey ho. If it happens again i will insist they change them all.

If anyone is in the same situation i would advise them to forward on this email trail. VW need to be seen as consistent and not show favourtism.

Discounting my emotive comments the fact remains that a "safety" feature that shuts the car down at speed is dangerous.

I personally like many people judging by the comments on this board do not want to be put in that siuation and wish to avoid at all costs.

I agree. However well you control your car in normal driving, if you suddenly lose power while doing 70 mph in the outside lane of a motorway, it can be difficult to avoid a dangerous situation if traffic is heavy in the other lanes.

It's unpleasant but 'death trap' is over egging the pudding. Once, while I was in the outside lane of the M1, the wiring loom to the ECU failed whilst in the outside lane-the engine immediately died. Simply pushed the clutch in to preserve momentum and gradually moved over to the hard shoulder. No drama. If you don't keep dragging the engine round at 3000RPM you should have half a mile or so of momentum-plenty of time to get the car to safety.

I'm sorry but no complex electromechanical device can be made 100% failsafe. I'm not defending VW's behaviour but blaming the manufacturer for your inability to handle a car with a problem is feeble.

Situational awareness...

Many of the cars I've owned / used have cut out in traffic and at speed. In the old days, it was an occupational hazard until the engine warmed up - thanks to the brilliance of the automatic choke...

More recently, it tends to be a software or electrical glitch - had a new Picasso a few years back that routinely shut itself down at any speed, entry to a roundabout, fast lane of the motorway, etc. Despite software updates and wiring changes, four Citroen dealers could never fix the fault, so we lived with it.

Dangerous? Not when compared to a blowout at speed.

Even a blowout isn't the instant head over heels disaster it's often touted to be. A blowout on a corner will almost certainly lead to a loss of control but there aren't any sharp corners on motorways.

The trick is to get the car straight BEFORE braking. Accelerate if you have to to straighten up then brake gently...

Some good news, the garage called to confirm the failed injector and offered to pay for all parts and 50% of labour. I insisted that I wanted all injectors & wiring looms replaced with the improved parts and was told this was unlikely due to a prevoius owner not serving the vehicle at an audi garage on one occasion. I was advised to speak to audi UK which I duly did, and after some negotiation they have agree to replace all remaining injectors, looms & cover all labour costs.

It transpires that the car before I owned it was in another audi garage only a month ago with a failed injector and Audi have taken that into account with the gesture of good will given in my case.

My faith in VAG has been partially restored and the case officer at Audi and the garage have been very helpful throughout this experience. Thank you for the comments and advice from other forum members of which has been a great help.

I can't see why this should restore any faith in VAG. What if, rather than an articulate, well informed person, you had been the proverbial "little old lady"?

Decorum does not permit the use of the feminine equivalent of having one's trousers lowered, but I fail to see any evidence of VAG behaving in an honest and honourable manner in this case.

The goods they have sold are not fit for purpose.

I have a 2006 VW Passat 2.0TDI 170 BHP with full VW service history and 56,000 miles on clock. Have owned this car after purchasing from an independent garage less than 2 months ago for £10.5k. Engine cut out while wifey was driving along a dark country lane at about 30 mph, fortunately managing to pull over and get to safety. After a few recovery journies, car is now with a VW main dealer and Wiring Loom and Injector no.4 have been diagnosed and the dealer has confirmed the other injectors have been checked and declared fit for purpose. Dealer contacted VW off their own back and VW agreed to contribute £660 of the £960 cost, still not over pleased to get a bill for £300 after owing this car for 2 months with the knowledge that there is a history of further injectors failing in the future without warning. After reading numerous reports & forums, I contacted VW customer services (0800 083 3920) myself. Got straight through and despite the previous offer, now have a case reference and a dedicated case handler for this to revisited. Don't know where this is heading, as yet to find out the outcome, but at this stage I can only say that VW were very responsive to the issue. My suggestion would be to research your problem thorougly, talk to them calmly and accurately & highlight your concerns (mine were primarily safety, inconvenience at losing my car for nearly three weeks and having to foot partial cost for a problem which in my opinion should have been a recall situation). My request to VW has been to have the wiring loom and all four injectors replaced at their cost. Incidentally they also consider brand loyalty when looking at your case so if you are a VW lover this can only go in your favour. I will report back to the thread when all is revealed!! In the meantime I will proceed with my VOSA defect notification.

I have a 2006 Passat 2.0TDI 140 BHP again full service history & only 37,000 miles on the clock. Like everybody else I suffered total engine shutdown yesterday (Thursday) I was doing 70mph on a dual carriageway. I managed to get safely to the side of the road & ended up 3 hours later at the local VW dealer.

As soon as the recovery guy told the chap behind the desk what car & the diagnostic result, his expression was a dead giveaway. He ordered a replacement injector straight away & told me the bill would be just over £900 but that VW were often giving goodwill payments.

With that ringing in my ears I Googled the issue when I eventually got home and found this thread (along with several others on the issue). Deciding to take the advice I rang VW Customer Service this morning 08000833920 (around 10am). I was polite & curteous explained what had happened, my concerns over safety, what the dealer had said, and that I was genuinely concerned about the car & the other 3 injectors. I also explained I live in a village with no shop (there's not even a pub!!!) so I'm stranded. The girl was helpfull & apologised for the issues & the incident I endured, she said although they normally have a 24-48 hour turnaround she would see if she could get my case in front of a Case Manager as soon as possible.

Received a call at 2pm from the Case Manager. They are replacing all 4 injectors at no cost which is great news. The only fly in my ointment is although they could have done the 1 today, they can't get the other 3 in till Monday, apprently the dealers are not allowed to hold parts worth more than £250 in stock for cost saving issues. The dealer is sorting me out with a car. Was very apologetic the "only" car available is a 2002 petrol Passat but as far as I'm concerned any car is better than no car. When I arranaged the car I asked if the new injectors were modified. The answer was "they come from a different supplier" when I said I thought they were all Seimens I got a mumbled "mmm they are from Seimens" reply? I'll leave you to make your own minds up on that one.

Thank you for your comments on this thread, I think my pocket would be awfully empty without the positive comments I found here.

BTW I have reported the incident to VOSA & Watchdog, lets keep the pressure on because, although I can't fault the service this should never have been allowed to happen in the first place.

Ok, update as promised..... had a phonecall from the VW Dealer this morning who has advised VW will replace loom and all four injectors free of charge as requested. Obviously delighted by this as it eliminates a huge safety concern for me and my wallet lives another day.

So, my advice is simply to call VW Customer Services directly, explain your situation clearly and calmly to them. For me it was a genuine safety concern and it seems VW are sitting up and taking notice. They are no fools and will have been doing their research into what a big problem this is causing their customers and the involvement of VOSA must be having an influence on their approach. I, like many, believe this should be a recall issue and left wondering why not, however I cannot fault VW for the professional and prompt way in which my claim has been dealt with.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread and highlighting this issue, how ever did we manage before the days of the internet!! I really hope other outcomes are equally as positive & will watch this thread with interest.

I don't agree! 99 out of 100 times you maybe able to bring the car to stop somewhere safe.

What about us who live and drive in rural areas, steep hedges and poor visibility, single tracks- with no where too pull over.

Than there is the overtake! we don't all drive on motorways and dual carriagways.

This has happned to me three times, cost me £1500, I have missed meetings and my wife does'nt want to drive the car anymore.

Poor situation, years ago they would of laughed in the States that Toyota would be number 1.

Mileage 110,000

Service History Full VW SH

Issues to date:

September 2010 Injector #3 failure car had done 92K, was picked up under routine servicing, luckily i had taken an extended VW warranty so was covered under Warranty (except the wiring loom @ £90)

May 2011 - Injector #1 and #2 failed car has done 110,00, driving on M25, sudden jerking and loss of power, luckily ive been driving miss daisy lately so was already in the 1st lane, now car is not with VW warranty, but a.n.other warranty co., hopefully fingers crossed, Injectors will be repaired under warranty - est total cost ...... £1500, 2 x injector failures.

I have also been told the steering column ECU has failed, i sure hope it hasnt and just needs a battery recharge and fault codes reset as that alone is £1000.00 NOT covered under Warranty !!! so best case is £0 (which id like very much), worst case...... £2500 !!!! OUCH...

I think this is quite apalling from VW not to have recalled these cars, surely with the amount of people having faults and close encouters, its only a matter of time before someone has a serious accident and opens up a libel case against VW. VW have to acknowlege this issue and rectify it, unless it was pre-planned on their part to earn lots of money fromus poor consumers.

Sudden engine failure is a dangerous fault. In this instance, there is enough evidence to show that a poorly designed component (Siemens piezo unit injector) is probably the cause of this problem.

If the manufacturer of this vehicle has the slightest interest in the safety of its customers and that of other road users, these engines should all be recalled for a re-work as soon as possible.

It is also possible that the vehicle manufacturer has no such interest in safety and is instead merely looking to minimise cost. We pay for a watchdog called Towser (sorry, VOSA) to bring such people to book and to maintain public safety.

I think Towser is a bit lethargic at the moment and may not like biting organisations which give him free bones from time to time...

Just to add, I left my car in gear as I pulled over, which helped keep the revs up for a while. It died once I depressed the clutch, which from memory was once I'd reached the hard shoulder. I had cruise control when it happened which probably helped. Reading some of these comments, I assume that if I had taken it out of gear I'd potentially have had power steering/brake issues which could have made the situation a lot more serious....

I'm sure in was invaluable. Electronic devices are great for overcoming frictional resistance...??

I often used to switch the engine off on downhill descents and I can tell you that the car doesn't explode. At 50mph is steering is barely any heavier than normal. The brake has several pumps of the pedal before the reservoir is depleted and even then the brakes still work-albeit heavily.

I deplore VAG's miserly antics, but I dislike overegging the pudding even more.

The fact is we are spoiled by the manufacturers and cars have become so reliable that many people simply don't know what to do in the event of mechanical failure.

Well, today I got my car back, all 4 injectors and the wiring loom replaced at VW's expense. Very pleased with the main dealers help in resolving this with minimal input from me. They did hint however, that VWHQ were attempting to only replace the faulty injector, so maybe there's a change of direction from higher up the food chain that could see future repairs limited.

My 05 Passat B6 tdi 140 (Lease car from new) Engine cut out no warning at 60mph in fast stream of traffic. Left us stranded and immobile wrong side of blind bend frightening experience. High risk of being rammed by large lorries coming round the bend at speed. Engine completely dead. Towed to local VW by AA. Diagnostics found 3 injectors + possible pump. When engine assembled diagnostics indicated 4th injector +pump and ICU? £3500 later it was running. (Top marks to VW agent. Very helpful, fantastic job in short time.) Bill sorted between VW and lease Co (Phew..!!) Although this occurred 2009 have now discovered that the early potentially faulty injectors Part no 03G130073DX were used. The later improved (03G130073SX Oct 2009?) not being available then. So another sudden engine shut down could happen any time.

Now facing unexpected bills for around £3000 to fix diesel leak (dripping out beneath vehicle from faulty diesel cooler near tank,) +4 new suspension springs, +suspension bushes. +Electronic handbrake components ..Handbrake locks on -other times fails to hold vehicle (has done from new -never fixed)

Vehicle has done 74000 miles. I have been sole user, it has full VW service history. If I spend ++ ££ for above repairs I also want the injectors sorted. (As unreliable could add a further £2500 at any time) +obvious safety issue. VW does not see it this way though.. Should a 5yr old car need £4800 to make it reliable??

..and I thought it was just me until I read all these stories. 18 months ago one of my injectors failed ona fairly routine trip on a single carriageway road doing 50 mph. At the time I thought, "ouch"... the car had done 90k miles and was just over 3 years old... managed to get a goodwill out of the dealer and VW as I have bought 6 VWs from the same dealer but still cost me £600... put it down to the perils of motoring and keeping a car into high mileage... it never occured to me that this was a potentially lethal problem until today when I nearly died..

70 mph on the M1, middle lane, 9.30 this morning, fairly busy but not rammed, luckily.. overtaking a lorry doing 59.5mph and wham! cut out...car virtually stopped and of course no brake lights... the lorry behind me doing 59.75 mph was fortunately far enough back that he didnt run into me but it was close.....sheer good luck meant i slowed down enough that the lorry on the inside undertook me and i was able to coast onto the inside lane and onto the hard shoulder. I am lucky to be alive...

AA called etc etc ... 3rd one this week he told me! towed to VW dealer.... you know the rest - out of warranty, wear and tear etc etc. Now in dispute with VW. I will never drive that car again until it has 4 new injectors.. how can I trust that the other 2 wont cut out as I drive it home.... needless to say VW say they are investigating... they know dont they?.. they just know and what a disgrace...

Why has this not been on watchdog or in WhatCar or in Which magazine.... people with 2.0 tdi passats need to know they are driving a death trap...

This wear and tear excuse is wearing a bit thin. Wear and tear on suspension , bearings, starter motor etc is ok but not on injectors surely ?. My last two cars a golf and a bmw did 200k + miles and never a minutes problem with them.

latest update on my case - VW customer care have agreed to replace all 3 old injectors with new ones free of charge.....that was just too easy for something costing so much. They know this is gathering momentum and wont be long before they are forced to recall. Dot let VW retailers fob you off with pathetic goodwill of 25% if this happens to you or anyone else.

Exactly as I suspected. There is no reversionary mode in this system - the cheapskates have only fitted one DC - DC converter in the ECU so in the event of a short, everything stops.

This is unacceptable - a short anywhere, including in the wiring inside the cylinder head, harness etc. - will cause an unpredictable engine stoppage.

The old Bosch system had a current limit per injector - so it would run on three cylinders under most fault conditions. The operating voltage was so low that any oil contamination was of no consequence.

If VAG have found a way of preventing oil (and fuel) getting inside injectors, they're magicians. Put something inside an engine made of multiple parts and oil will get inside it. Soot in the oil will then cause a short.

Let's hope VOSA are bright enough to see this and take the proper action to protect the public.

I Drive an audi A4 2.0 tdi quattro 170 and mine went on thursday in the middle of the m25 in the road works.My car came to rest on a fly over in lane 1 as there was no hard shoulder,causing a lorry to crash into the back of a camper van further back. If this was at a busier time i'm sure i would of been in an accident. Audi said it will cost just shy of £1200,i'll be phoning them on monday and telling them to fix it for free also i'll try and specify the bosch injectors instead.

Without wishing to incur the wrath of our Moderators, my latest findings and opinions are posted in "Technical" - copy below:

There seems to be a concept problem with this modification of the PD fuel system which may render it unsafe for general use on the road.

PD engines have the entire fuel pump/injector assembly running in oil - it's inside the engine. This is very highly beneficial to the moving parts such as the roller cam followers. Common rail engines have the injectors external to the engine's lubricant. This is a significant difference which means that this type of failure cannot occur.

Oil in diesel engines contains a significant quantity of soot towards the end of use (before an oil change) and will conduct when a high voltage gradient is applied to it. The earlier Bosch injectors were low voltage/high current devices, so this was not a limitation - an "oil induced" short circuit would not occur. The first generation PD engines were therefore safe.

The change from Bosch to Siemens piezo actuated injectors required the fitment of a high voltage invertor to the ECU to provide the required drive voltage - and there is only one of these per ECU, to my knowledge.

In a Siemens PD injector, the presence of a conducting path within the actuator for the injector servo valve (caused by oil ingress or a mechanical failure) will place an overload on the invertor within the ECU - which will then shut down for its own safety.

Then everything stops.

In my opinion, this Siemens system represents an ill-conceived development of the PD system insofar as parts carrying high voltages by necessity, run in potentially conductive lubricating oil. Due to the non-reversionary capability of the ECU, a single short will stop the engine.

My view is that VOSA should consider stipulating that all ECUs fitted to this system should be changed for a design incorporating twin DC/DC invertors so that the system, in the event of an injector short or wiring fault, will fail gracefully and some engine function will be retained. This would allow safe steering and braking following a failure.

Nobody would be allowed to design an aircraft like this - my opinion is that VAG have messed up the design of the PD engine by the fitment of these injectors and probably knew they had. I wonder if VAG sold the Siemens injectors into the US?

VAG have had a few tastes of the US Transport Regulation Authorities in the past and would probably not want to mess with them. The size of the potential market there makes compliance with their regulations essential.

Got me...driving home from work late, rainy night on dual carriageway, " Engine Fault Garage" RAC called out but a local contract mechanic arrived, RAC were busy. He couldnt get it started so towed it to my home. Had a quick look on the internet when i got in and found this forum. When the RAC mechanic arrived 8:30am next day part of their service to assess vehicle then tow to garage ( if needed) he used the diagnostics comm which showed faulty injector ( i had already put money on this outcome). Unfortunately no local dealer to go to so took it to an independant who checked the car and found No2 injector was faulty. Know heres the rub he could only source the injector from one distributor cost £600 plus vat, for my model in all with loom etc it will cost £800-£1000.

What disturbed me the most was the way the car failed 60 mph to 0, luckly late at night so the road was fairly quiet, but no hard shoulder or lay by near. I dread to think what could have happened when i was driving sunday, full car with children on the M4.

I did ring VW customer services and they were very apologetic but advised i should have gone to a dealer so they can assess the vehicle to see if its a model that is affected !!!

I assured them if it happens again which is very possible since theres another three that can go, thats what ill do. I might even drive 8 miles to the dealer and talk to them, or better sell the car, which by the way i bought private only 4 weeks ago. Now that is a b ummer.

I got called yesterday, I have partial Audi history on the vehicle but the rest was through indies under my ownership. They offered a full refund on the injector/ loom/ bits/ labour and diagnostics... over £1k worth of work. I sent the invoice today to them via email and I am waiting for the cheque.

Thanks to everyone who filed with VOSA and spread the word and chased, with one report going in every day so far, this has given VOSA the ammo they needed to square up with VAG. The Dutch and German VOSA equivalents are involved too from what I understand, if they follow suit and call people up, this could give the hole movement enough momentum to get this policy rolled out to countries without an official body that deals with vehicle safety.

I did today call in the nearest VW dealership ( Sinclairs Newport South Wales) and as i walked to the desk i heard a young lady speaking to a customer stating they had the injectors and all 4 would be done and when the car was ready they would ring them, it was perfect timing, so sat down.and explained my situation. £840 it cost me, what she advised was the next time one should fail go to VW dealership and contact customer care. She believes in my case they may pay for the parts for the first injector failure (not the labour). So keep your bills, they will like to see the cost and serial numbers of new parts with which injector was replaced, the worst shes seen is at least 70% of costs paid. She did admit there was a problem with the injectors used 2005 - 2007 ( a bad batch !)

Hopefully though before another injector dies VW will get their act together and do a recall, i did fill in a VOSA form and implore all those who still havent to do so.

I just thought I'd let you all know my Golf 2.0 TDI 170 (07 plate 95K miles) failed on 25/06/11. Injector #1, casing and loom replaced with VW covering 100% of cost. They would not replace other injectors until they failed though. The dealership did say that as mine was an "08" chassis they would replace other injectors up 250K miles with no age limit. Nothing in writting though. I have just submitted a VOSA report

Ardrethol , they should be refunding everything including labour. The bottom line is they supplied you with duff parts and cannot charge you or deny a refund for the labour costs of replacing it ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY HAVE OPENLY ADMITTED FAULT.

Get your labour costs refunded, all the Audi guys have and we're all VAG with the SAME problem. They are under pressure so now is your chance to press for a full refund. Remember, it was NOT YOUR FAULT they failed, they were INHERENTLY FAULTY... why are YOU covering the cost???

I had the exact same issue yesterday where injector number 1 failed suddenly while doing about 55mph on a busy A road. The RAC towed the car to my local VW dealer (Sinclairs in Bridgend, South Wales) who replaced the injector at a staggering £1054. Luckily i took out a 2 year extended warranty with TWG when i bought the car so they are refunding me. I still had to fork out the money up front to pay VW. This is the second injector to fail suddenly and it is a scary and potentially dangerous experience.

What bothers me the most is that VW have accepted this and are now changing all injectors as a "Good Will Gesture" free of charge, but i happen to be exempt becuase i have the extended warranty. It makes sense to me when i think about that if they can claw some money back for their incompentency from warranty companies they will. When i argued my case VW said they only change them FOC if the car is still under manufacturers warranty or if you have no warranty whatsover....this is bazaar!!

I have just sent an email to VW head office expressing my frustration regarding this. I will update you all as soon as i get a response, if i ever do.

Dont take no for an answer regarding changing the injectors FOC. With the increasing pressure from VOSA it seems they are definately acting on this.

An update to my previous post. After VW replaced injector #1 and wiring FOC I have today had a call from VW saying they will now replace the remaining injectors FOC after VOSA contacted them. I will get a call fro my local dealer to arrange a date. I have to say that I haven't had any real issues with the way VW have handled my case.

As I have outlined in my assessment of this problem above, this type of injector failure can only occur on a PD engine where the entire injector assembly is mounted inside the engine and runs in (potentially) electrically conductive lubricating oil. A short circuit stops the engine.

The current CR (common rail) engines have the injector conventionally sited external to the engine's lubricant and will thus not exhibit this particular fault.

Just thought i would share my experience with the Forum..

I bought a Passat 140sport 56 plate at the start of last June from an independant dealer...last August i was let down by the car 320 miles from home(long recovery for the RAC)..Injector 4 was replaced under warranty from the garage...so far so good...(So i thought)..

Last friday,the car died on me again(recovery from the RAC) to an independant garage who after diagnostics told me that Injector 2 had failed...and a quote of £895 to fix it..

After reading the forum i contacted VW customer care and explained my situation and disappointment in a calm and professional tone..they listened,gave me a case number and asked if i could get the car to a VW dealer to verify the fault...i did this at my own cost on tuesday pm..

Wednesday..the garage called to ask for service history,which i gave them...all VW dealer services bar the last one(2 weeks ago at an independant)

Today i received a call from VW to inform me that all 4 injectors and wiring loom will be replaced at no cost to myself....

A fantastic responce from VW.....confidence restored in the German Brand...!!

Good News here to..

Had a call from VW customer services, i have to send the invoice for the work done by the independant garage for the injector replace and fit (£830) and i will re-imbursed 100% in 21 days, also to book the car into a VW approved garage to replace the other three injectors and looms at no cost to me.

What you must do is make sure you get a case manager assigned............

Invoice sent.....car booked in ....result :)

So let me get this straight. Its the PD engine thats at fault NOT the CR engine. Not many of you here have stated what your engine is just the year of the car. So all VAG's are now CR engines, when did they stop using the PD engine? And in what models. I am thinking of maybe a Mondeo or a Passat or a 32od

This particular fault only affected PD engines. The PD engine was gradually phased out, hanging on in the 1.9 105hp guise until 2009. However some of the 2.0 litre engines were also PD.

I am based in Rep of Ireland. I have the same problem with injectors in a 05 Passat. I got on to the department of Transport who sent my Letter on to Volkswagen and this is the response I got. Not looking good. My original letter is below this. Any advice would be appreciated

Dear Mr Ryan,

We are writing to you in regards your Volkswagen Passat, registration number 05LK6671 and your concerns regarding the injector. Mr Justin Martin has forwarded a copy of your email to us for a response.

Given Volkswagens high standards in terms of product and service it is regrettable of circumstances in which a customer has cause for concern. You can be assured that Volkswagen efforts are always directed towards providing vehicles that will give reliable and satisfactory service throughout the lifetime of the vehicle. Unfortunately this aim is not always achieved for all the millions of individual component parts manufactured annually.

We see from information available to us that your vehicle was first delivered on the 2 nd of September 2005 which means that the Manufacturers 2 year warranty has long since expired. Correctly, after the warranty has expired there is no right for further coverage. However, as you may be aware Volkswagen operate a goodwill policy whereby an authorised Volkswagen dealer can apply to the Manufacturer for goodwill. We can advise that Pierse Motors have made representation on your behalf for goodwill support and we have agreed to cover 50% of the parts and labour. Unfortunately we are unable to increase the coverage in this case.

We would recommend contacting Pierse Motors in a view to making an appointment where they can carry out the necessary repairs. As you will make a contribution towards the repair you will receive a 2 year parts warranty on the repair which we hope offers you peace of mind going forward.

As per our conversation today, please note the following:

I presently own a 2005 2.0 TDI SE 140BHP Volkwagen Passat which I purchased 2.5 years ago. (05LK6671)

I was driving to Limerick from Dublin last Christmas on the fast lane of the Motorway when my car completely cut out without any warning. I had to veer into the left across the slow lane and thankfully came to a stop without causing an accident or injuring myself or my family. I had to get the car towed and it was eventually taken to Maxwells Volkswagen garage in Athy, Co. Kildare. They said an injector had gone of which there are four and this caused the engine to fully cut out. To replace one injector it cost me approx €1100 plus cost of tow. I paid this and said I would forget. The car has not been the same since and is now chugging. I have taken it into Pierse Motors Volkwagen dealer in Tipperary Town twice and after replacing the starter motor and other items they have told me that a second injector is faulty and will need to be replaced. I have lost all confidence in the car and will not take it out on he open road for fear of causing an accident. What if the third and fourth injectors go. I have researched this and it is common in 05 and 06 passats in England due to faulty injectors. I rang volkswagen ireland and they have said they do not agree that this is a problem and it is outside their warranty. I have sent in a request from Pierse Motors and what I have got from Volkswagen is to cover half the cost of the injector.

As I have found out nearly all the people on forums with this exact problem have had the four injectors replaced free of charge from Volkswagen in England. I wonder why they don't do this in Ireland. This is a parts failure and a massive safety concern for me and my family. If I were to pay for four new injectors it would probably cost me €4400 which isn't far off the value of the car. As I said I have no confidence in the car and feel I am not being treated right when trying to deal with an obvious problem with these injectors. I would appreciate some help in this regard.

Just returned home today with my passat from having three injectors changed free of charge and i can expect the refund for the work done by the independant garage for the first injector in 21 days.

When i returned had a phone call from Volkswagen Safety Dept asking whether i had booked the car in for the replacement of the injectors and if so did they change all 4. Had a long conversation about the faulty injectors and he explained why there is not a full recall at the moment , but he did indicate that the process was ongoing replacing faulty injectors across europe on affected owners, not sure why this doesnt cover Ireland.

That was pretty much the standard bulls*** email I got in September before I started the VOSA campaign which finally led to these being swapped, and people getting promised refunds.

If in Ireland they won't do anything about it, MAKE THEM DO SOMETHING. Join the forums and splatter that email everywhere. People are still under the illusion that VAG are replacing these because they care... your email is proof that they only care about damage control.

Call VOSA, see if they can direct you to their Irish counterparts, I know they are working with the Dutch and Germans, why not the Irish too?

Sorry guys i was wrong, it was a VOSA representative that rang me and later last week i had a letter from them....

It read.

Dear Mr......

VW PASSAT-ENGINE CUT OUT FUEL INJECTOR FAILURE.

Thank you for notifying Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) of the problems experienced with your vehicle. I can confirm the investigation into this fault is now completed.

Following detailed negotiations between VOSA and the vehicle manufacturer, it has been agreed VW Group will:

1. Contact you personally to arrange for all your vehichle's remaining injectors to be replaced and ensure you are 100% satisfied.

2. Reimburse customers who have paid for new injectors even if the work was completed outside of their authorised network.

If you have any concedrns or questions about this matter, you should contact the Volkswagen Group Customer Service Centre. If neccessary they will arrange to have your vehicle inspected at an authorised repairer free of charge.

VOSA will continue to work closely with VW Group to ensure that this issue is concluded as swiftly as possible.

Thank you fo taking the time to bring this matter to our attention.

Now i understand why VW were so accommodating when i rang them the second time, i had pre-empted this letter, but they must have been in possession of correspondence from VOSA.

First of all id like to say thank you to all who as posted on this forum.

My case started when the RAC told me it was an injecor fault on the 17-07-11, so i looked it up on this forum and gave me the ammo i needed. next day i booked it in with VW, they told me they needed to do a diag at the cost of £45. three days later and still no diag done, so i phoned VW CS and explained the problem. I spoke to a lovely women called laura who was very helpfull, she opened a case and within 20min of her opening the case the VW dealership phoned me back saying that they had done the diag and No.4 injector had gone and they are going to replace it FOC as a goodwill gesture. I asked why the rest were'nt been replaced and i was told that VW CS told them just to replace the No.4 injector, so i got back on the phone to VW CS and they told me i needed to wait untill the case team had looked at my case. Iv spoke to VW CS today 21-07-11 to see if they have looked at my case and i happened to speak to laura again, after thanking her for her help she then told me she would go see if the case team can look in to my case today. 20mins later i had a phone call off the case team who told me that they would replace all 4 and the wiring loom FOC.

so i would say if you have this problem, take your car to a vw dealer for a diag. Speak to VW CS and open a case. they have up to 72hr to reply but keep on to them and update them when the diag is done.

So go through VW CS and up to the MD if necessary. Get the injectors replaced FOC, before they fail and cost you £2000.

It shouldn't cost you a penny even after failure, just report the failure to VOSA and have VW swap them all out at their expense. The injector failure is a known issue and you should not be forking out for them regardless of what the dealership or VW say... the swap agreement is part of an agreement between VAG and VOSA for ALL...

Don't pay them a penny, I am tired of hearing about people having to pay for diagnostics and all sorts of made up services to get this done, it is a VAG fault, the repair is fully covered by them, full stop. It's in black and white on the letters sent out to anyone who has followed procedure and reported to VOSA.

Just had mine replaced on A4 2.0 tdi only because I contacted vosa to report the design fault.

VAG are not exactly broadcasting the fact that they will replace all for free even before they fail. I think that they should be contacting owners or at least making the breakdown services aware.

Hi I am a repairing garage in Rugby, recently had a 55 plate Passat in as a non start, fault code was P1517 ecu powerr supply short to earth, removed the rocker cover and disconnected the injectors one at atime and tried to start it, when we removed number 2 it started, I suggested to the customer that he contact VW dealer in Coventry and they have agreed to replace it as a good will gesture. Another update on my failure. VW have already replaced injector #1 with loom at no cost to me but would not replace the others uless they fail. After registering a vehicle defect with VOSA as recommended on this board, VW have now replaced all my other injectors. Good service from VW but only if you complain in the first place. So thanks VOSA, and you all know what you need to do. Hope this helps.

SO in fact VW have now coughed and are taking action to remedy this matter ? does this also apply to Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles equipped with this engine ? I was considering a Seat Altea Freetrack with the 2.0 TDI 170 engine, but after reading all this I will be inclined towards something that does not posess an inherent design fault that could be lethal.

I note that one of the contributors further up, stated that the failure of his Audi engine in roadworks caused a lorry to crash into a camper van further back in the traffic, so even if you can safely bring the car to a halt, the rest of the vehicles behind you won't neccesarily expect you to suddenly stop, and for this reason it is a serious and potentially deadly fault.

In Aug 2011 my 56 plate diesel passat came to grinding halt for no reason just died, nothing I knew having read up about passat's it was injector failure, prior to my cars failure I had been warned of this issue, I read a few forums and decided my best course of action was to ring VW Customer services & I explained to them that I was concerned about this common injector problem, in fairness to Vw they asked if my car was vw serviced, which it is, and they said that if my injectors failed, I should take the car to my local Vw garage and they would asses and come to some agreement to replace and meet the costs, so on the day my car just stopped I had my car transported to Vw where they duly replaced x2 injectors/ looms free of charge... It's true. I had an injector fail on holiday in South Wales in early July -- it's a 56-plate Passat 2.0 TDi -- I'd bought it only 2 months before.

I got the garage (that's really close to the MEN arena in Manchester) where I bought it to replace the injector (although they put in one from a breakers, it took them 3 weeks, they damaged the bodywork [although repaired it well] and they refused to pay the £410 towing charge from Cardigan.... so they're a bunch of charlatans) but, VW...

VW seem to have recognised the problem and are now acting responsibly. After reading this, I rang their Customer Services, and they got VW my local garage to replace all 4 injectors -- free.

Anyone know if I can get the towing charge back from the original garage? : )

So glad I read this thread as had no idea this problem was so common (why would i?). My Wife's Passatt 2.0 TDI, 55 reg, did same last week as most people on here - in outside lane of busy dual carriageway, engine dies, 'Engine Failure' message, manages to get into inside lane but no hard shoulder so hazards on. Meanwhile cars are braking to avoid parked car... She is standing on verge calling breakdown company, luckily she didn't have our 1 and 2 yrd old children with her.

Anyway, had it towed to local VW specialist while she drove home in courtesy car and sure enough, injector failure, £817 repair bill to get it going which was unavoidable. Having since read these threads, I have called VW main customer services and explained it calmly and been told that a case manager will call me back within 48 hours to refund the money spent and arrange to have the other 3 injectors replaced. No arguments at all, they are obviously under instruction on this. Only worry now is if they are being replaced with same model of injector, how long till they fail again? Anyone have any idea on this? Or are they now using different injectors I wonder...

So if it happens to you, phone them for sure and hopefully you get same result...

I had a similar issue in September 2009 (78,000 miles) with my 56 VW Passat 170 TDi and had the injector wiring hareness replaced. The harness gets soaked in engine oil and eventually breaks down. When that did not cure the problem had injector no. 1 replaced. After much negotiation VW coughed up 60% but I was still saddled with a hefty bill.

It again died on me a week ago (122,000 miles). RAC took me to an independent who diagnosed a P1040 Injector no. 1, supply voltage - circuit malfunction and P2146 Injector - Group A, supply voltage open circuit.

I requested that they replace the harness first of all which they did, £200 inc VAT. They then advised that Injector 1 be replaced, £430 plus VAT for the part alone! I rang previous VW dealer to find out which injector was replaced last time and was advised that this was a known problem and that VW recognise this and will replace FOC. VW wouldn't let this very good independent carry out the warranty work.

Now to get it to the main dealer. RAC wanted to charge £130 because I was originally towed 20 yards to an independent and they do not do garage to garage recoveries FOC however hard I tried to convince them.

I have asked that all 4 be replaced which they will do. I have also asked that they seek some goodwill on the independents charges as this would have been replaced anyway when the injectors are replaced.

I gather VW will not do a recall but will only replace when they fail.

Evening all,

Well I had this same issue on Sunday evening on the dual carriageway stretch of the A50 between the M1 and Derby.

Fortunately I got safely off the main road, despite an idiotic taxi driver trying to undertake me. One interesting thing to note is that when this happens with the DSG, you can't even get it into neutral to coast -- at least I couldn't, though maybe I hadn't a cool enough head to do it properly.

RAC man came out, plugged in the computer, got the 4160 code and straight away said it was a tow. Fortunately I have family close to where the fault occurred, so I had the car towed there that night and then recovered to the local dealer (Parkway, Derby) the following day.

Yesterday, I called the garage for an update, and was told that four new injectors had been ordered and would be fitted today. I queried this, as I'd not been contacted with details of a fault, the costs, etc, and was told that VW are taking care of this as a good will gesture.

This being the case, it seems that either some dealers are aware of the problems and dealing with VW customer services direct, or that VW have alerted dealers to the problem. Either way, I'm very pleased that this is being addressed without me having to raise a complaint, although obviously I'd rather this was being rectified in routine services or a recall rather than waiting for a failure.

In any case, I'm grateful to the members of this forum who have shared their experiences and raised it with the proper authorities. I'm sure this action has helped the rest of us get a better resolution to the problem. I'm also pleased that Parkway and VW have dealt with this so quickly and competently.

I am from Romania, I bought a new VV Passat (170hp, 2.0 TDI) in 2007. I still have the car and, yes, the injector problems together with it.

One injector broke down in December 2010, the second one in August 2011 during a long trip abroad. It was very difficult to find a platform and it took several days to repare, because the injector was out of stock. I had to stay with my 2 and 4 year old kids without air conditioning and with little water, on a side of a rod, for 6 hours in order to wait for the platform.This is almost crime.

The injector issue is a danger to security not only because the engine stops suddenly, but also in these cases when you are away from home, with small kids, in a country where almost nobody speaks English, so that the way to find and reach a hotel room and to find transport for the car are very difficult. I am not going to let the things like that, I am going to ask VW or moral repair (it also cost me 200 euro a platform and 500 euro to rent a car not to loose my reservation).

Anyway, ontopic, from what I learned the new Continental injectors that are replacing the broken ones are not a fix. They will break the same as Siemens. Their construction (technically) is identical. Continental bought Siemens last year and now the Siemens injectors are only badged differently with Conti.

In Romania there are already cases with broken new Continental injectors. In UK, as I read a Skoda forum, also there are people from England that began to have the same problem.

So, I am not happy at all that VW are replacing the injectors, because the issue remains. They are only jogging with us, they are not fixing the problem, but only delaying it for some time.

From my point o view VW must be taken into justice. Maybe it is useful that somebody that had injectors changed recently in UK to confirm, if there was any discussion with the workshop (service). The new Continental injectors are really fixing the issue or are the same Siemens crap with other name that will lead to the same problem after 50.000-100.000 kilometers?

I've a 2008 model 2.0TDI Sport 4Motion Wagon - 79500mls FVWSH - injector problem mainfested itself yesterday - "Engine Fault, Garage!" on dash display - AA recovered vehicle to local VW agent - (who know and service car anyway); service mgr said VW very aware of fault and are replacing all injectors + wiring loom FOC; no matter the age of vehice and up to 100K mls - VW are footing the bill - they know they've a problem and are being responsible in their treatment of customers vehicles showing symptoms. At no stage was I informed theyre only swapping faulty injector - rather a blanket swap out of all 4 + loom applies.

Whilst I'm grateful that VW are taking this approach in my case, I think it very strange - as this fault is safety related - not to say potentially catastrophic (imagine on a motorway at 70 mph + busy traffic - with no warning - power steering + power brakes go kaput!) - that it's not subject of full recall of all vehices likley to have suspect parts fitted.

Finally can anyone advise as car's with VW agent anyway - I'm told timing belt is recommended to be replaced at 80K mls - what sort of bill should I expect from garage if I instruct them to go ahead and replace belt?

Been following this issue for some time here and elsewhere
Have had stutter on acceleration for a while in my 2006 Leon FR TDI (170 PS PD engine), however have not had any engine cut out issues.
Rang Seat UK who were v helpful, without admitting any liability! They advised me to book car into any Seat Dealership to check injectors and see if affected.
Car was seen at Seat dealership today. They were most definitely not aware of this current policy by Seat UK but rang me to say that the injectors were of the (potentially) faulty type and that they would replace them all next week FOC.
RESULT - car is over 5 years old and at 52k miles.
I feel very frustrated for the MANY owners of VW group vehicles with this engine who will be oblivious to this fault and will only know about it when failure occurs - potentially in a very dangerous situation. Clearly VW Group are taking the approach of keeping those who ask happy (and presumably to keep VOSA of their back) but haven't got the balls to carry out a full recall.
Spread the word far and wide to anyone you know with a vehicle with this engine.
Incidentally, my car hasn't seen the Seat Dealership for servicing since it came out of warranty but does have a full service history at indepedents...which they asked nothing about.

Yes today I was discussing this matter with the VW dealer, they told me about a recent case where a 55 plate passat presented at the dealer, having broken down. The car had never been to the dealer ever, so its service history was unknown. All 4 injectors replaced, and the wiring loom F.O.C. as Goodwill from VW

I owned an 06 reg passat for about three years. I started having injector problems and had it fixed from VW in 2008 at a cost of £897. Then it kept on going on and on and on for all the injectors consecutively. In the end it was costing me so much that isold the vehicle a couple of years ago.

Does anybody know where i stand with trying to get a refund on the repairs i had done to it even though i dont own the car anymore and neither will i be EVER buting a VW again in my life!!!!

Contacted VW, check on its well to cover previous costs, car booked in for last injector to be replaced.

Noticed this week the car was smother and MPG average for journey went up to over 47 mpg, for last year highest was 41 ever. Yesteday morning emision light came on car was a tad sluggish and MPG dropped. ( so is the 4th injector playing up)

Therefore I wonder how much it has cost me with reduced MPG for last few years?

Have the injectos not been performing for last year and where do you stand, it smoked a bit which which was un-burnt fuel. Before I brought the car it was fuly VW serviced, would a service have picked up injectors not working propoerly??

And last if it has been running this bad would havde the un-burnt fuel dmaged the exhaust/ catalyst convertor?

Anyone help?

I drive a VW Passat 2.0 TDI Diesel with 86k on the clock.

Last week my car cut -out on the way to work on the dual carriageway. I was able to claw to the hard shoulder. It restarted after 2- 3 attempts but failed again that evening. I got it towed back home and the following morning towed to my VW garage. They told me that fuel injectors 1,2 & 4 had failed (3 they said was fine and would not be replaced).

To cut a long story short; They replaced all 3 injectors and unit injector loom FREE OF CHARGE.I do have a service history at this garage.

LOL after all four injectors were replaced on my Leon my emissions light went out and I too noticed a significant improvement in MPG (I had never been able to get over 43mpg even on a gentle run, suddenly I was seeing 47 mpg in normal driving).

However, like you I was concerned about what damage might have been done to the catalyst, etc and also whether these "new" injectors are actually that or just the same design with the same potential to become faulty. Even though mine never actually failed, the car ran rough before they were changed. I basically lost my faith in it and have now bought a petrol Audi with a chain cam....

This week had two more replaced ( one I pad for 12 months ago but was not the nwere part code). Runs well, have done best part of 35000 miles with 5 mpg less. VW are refunding all my previous costs. All power to the web.

I fell victim to the dreaded 'injector incident' yesterday, left work and got to the end of the car park before the engine failed- slowed to the side (was greatful for the slight slope in the road). RAC man explained that this happened quite often and recommended me to check the web for info. Was taken to our trusted garage where hubby immediately ordered the part. Got home and started doing a bit of research and came upon this forum/thread.

Having read quite alot of the threads here, I thought there might be a case. Called VW customer services explained my case, told him its all over the internet and i'd reported it with VOSA and the chap told me yes there is a problem with 'some' models and if I take my car to a VW garage to have it checked, if it turns out that the injector is faulty it will be replaced. I specifically called to ask charges- he said there would be none if I have to have it replaced. I called the garage but the part had come and the replacement had already taken place. So called customer services back. I said would there be a possiblity of refund as I would have had it replaced with VW had I known there to be an actual fault. He said possibly as I have all my receipts. He said to contact my local VW garage and take the car in to have it checked anyway. DId this, and they said no need to check if there were no faults..hmm. A little confused at this point. He said also reluctant to give refund as replacement took place at an independent garage. (which i think is nonsence) as it was a VW component bought from a VW dealer.

basically he wasn't playing ball and told me I would need confirnation from VW UK as to who is responsible for payout (if applicable). So have to go back to VW CS and get solid assurance that I will get a refund.

Have to say i'm very pleased and thankful to have found this forum and to all who have commented on their own experiences and encounters with VW direct.

I bought my vw pasatt 2.0 tdi 140 last year its on 55 plate 54000 miles on the clock with a sevice history.After a month it cut out on the way home from work AA took me home i then contacted the dealer i had purchased it from as he had given me a warranty,turned out to be an injector under warranty so happy days.two months ago on my way home from work it cut out again,AA man came told him what had happened he said his words"i should have VW/Audi stamped on my forehead the amount of vw audis i have been to with injector faults" that was without me telling him one had failed last year.He took me home next day i took it to an independant you guessed it injectors £772 ouch.I then found this forum rang vw cs they asked for the invoice and a copy of my v5 i obliged 6 weeks later they sent me the money for the repairs,i booked the car in to my local vw dealership for the 31st of this month on my way to work this morning noooooo it cut out AA man again so the car is at the vw dealership a week early no bills i hope,sorry i forgot to mention vw cs said they would replace injectors FOC prior to todays breakdown.Besides the cost and inconvenience the overiding issue must surley be saftey engine cuts out in the fast lane of a motorway it doesnt bare thinking about

I bought a 57 plate 2.0TDi Passat with 107,000 miles on it from BCA Auctions last week and didn't get a chance to look at the history beforehand. I drove it for a week without problems then suffered an injector failure as described by others. I was recovered home (it was yesterday - Sunday) and it was then taken by truck to a VW dealer this morning for inspection in Newark Notts. They quoted £50 to diagnose the fault. They called a few hours later to say it was injector no.4 that had failed and on checking the service history on their system they could see that 1,2 and 3 were replaced under warranty last year. I was expecting to get in to a battle to get the 4th one done for free but before I could even ask they assured me that they have replaced no.4 with a new injector and are currently valeting it for me before I go to pick it up. They also waived the £50 diagnostic charge. I imagine it helped that the car has a FVWSH and stamps all the way up to 103k but it wasn't mentioned.

I know many will be saying 'so they should', which I agree with, but in this case I didn't even have to try so all credit to Newark Volkswagen for being upfront, courteous and polite in making this potentially very difficult situation so straight forward.

This is my first VW so although not so happy with the fault in the first place, I'm very impressed with the after care received so far.

I'm very relieved that I haven't had to battle like some others have, particularly with the mileage on my car (now at 108k and almost 4 years old) so I thought I should share this with you in the hope that others will also receive this level of service.

I have just got my car back today from VW PULMANS DURHAM it went in on tuesday after suddenly loosing power on monday night when driving my 2 daughters home from gymnastics,luckily for me I was not too far from home and have a friend who is in the motor trade.He came out on tuesday and hooked up to his computer and discovered it had a injector failure, when I called in to see him after work on tuesday he told me the bad news of injector failure then the next news took my breath away as he told me the cost of 1 injector £450 + vat and fitting on top,I then had the good luck to come home and log on to honest john and found this thread and upon reading this phoned VW CUSTOMER SERVICE and was given a case number. I had to have the car towed to the VW PULMANS in Durham.Got phone call on the wednesday to say that the fault had been diagnosed as Injector failure and all 4 would be replaced free of charge PHEW.!!!! I can not thank everyone on here enough and also how professional and caring the whole of the VW people I have had to deal with have been. SO THANK YOU AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK I will be spreading the word ,my mate in the motor trade did not know of this fault but he will also be spreading the word.

It is indeed always satisfying to know of a satisfactory outcome to a problem aided in part by the contributors to this Forum.

I must however take issue with the above statement regarding VAG's "acceptance" of their responsibilities. It is self evident that a disgracefully reluctant VAG have been kicked into reworking these defective injectors.

Without pressure from the Forum and other organisations, VAG would have allowed cars to remain in use (remember there are still plenty of them out there) which are a danger to their drivers and to other road users. There is also the small matter of the considerable expense incurred by some owners of these vehicles.

If only all organisations were as honest as VAG...

Just a quick note to say a big "Thank you!" to all the contributors on this thread. I stumbled across it whilst sat in my local "s******s" waiting for my second service to be completed last week, surfing the web trying to understand why they were trying to sell me a "Haldex oil change" on my 07 2.0 Tdi 140 two wheel drive Passat!

Anyway, your thread and others alerted me to a potentially dangerous and very costly problem. I called VW HQ and told them of my concerns and that VOSA were recommending that owners contact them so they could check their cars. On the first call I was fobbed off and told to call the dealers and they would sort it. Not quite so as the dealers want a "case number". So I called VW again and got through to someone rather more helpful. He said that they would inspect the injectors and replace them and the harness FOC if the dodgy injectors were fitted. However, if the injectors were not the dodgy ones I'd have to pay £45+VAT for the inspection! A quick mention that VOSA were saying that VW would inspect the car with no mention of any fees and "should I call VOSA to check with them?" resulted in an immediated waiving of the fee in any event! Too right!

Anyway, the upshot is that my car was at the dealers for the check earlier in the week and all 4 injectors and harness have now been replaced.

An excellent result as I would have otherwise had to sell the car as I would not have been happy with Mrs O driving our toddler twins in it every day.

I really do think this matter worthy of a proper recall.

Evening all.

Nice little read this. Im looking into buying a 2008/09 vw golf gt tdi 170, Obviously after reading this I will make sure its one with a full vw history to make claims easier should any faults occur, and possibly take out an extended warranty.

A question I do have however is these faulty injectors after reading through the thread it seems to be more on the earlier cars around 2005>2007 so did vw update the injectors on the later models ie the one im looking at buying? Or were the same used throughout production?

Also I got slightly lost reading the post and i'm unclear with the VOSA outcome that if vw will replace the injectors if they are still working by the efected type of injectors or only after failure?

Any further info would be apreiciated before I comit to buying. It does however seem to be hard to find a car these days without some fault.

Just want to say thanks to everyones input on this thread as I'm contemplating buying a passat estate. (Not sure if I'll still buy one mind)

I called VW Customer Care earlier today and was told their dealers will check to see if the faulty components are present and if so will be replace FOC. There is no mileage limitation nor is any service history required. However, if no parts need replacing then you are liable for the Diagnostic fee.

How can I tell if it is an PD or a CR engine?

Can this be checked by the vehicles numbers / data? Or do I have to lift up the hood - bonnet and visually inspect the engine? Do you have a picture to show the difference between the injector types?

What if the injectors have been replaced, will I still be able to identify that it is an unfortunate PD model?

Presently, I have been driving a Passat 1.9TDI (2002) for 5 years over and was so impressed with its practicality, economy and reliability, I had no two thoughts, but to buy another Passat. A fantastic working horse. In the Baltics the car has to deal with poor road conditions, winter temperatures of up to -30C and summers with +35C. The Passat has been great.

I decided to heed caution expressed by friends and was stunned to find this thread confirming serious problems. I express my deepest sympathy with those whos familys have suffered both emotionally and financially.

2007 Passat TDI Sport 170, come off the end of the M55 onto the M6 and engine cut out, no warning lights. Managed to get onto the hard shoulder. Initial attempt to restart failed but there was a buzzing sound when the key pushed in. Got it restarted but cut out 100yds down the motorway. This happended 3 times in total but each time managed to get it restarted after waiting a couple of minues, eventually got home. Read this thread when I got home, thought best to take it to local VW dealer and get diagnostic check and if injectors are part of the fault then contact VW Customer services. Diagnostic chek revealed that Ignition Supply relay was faulty which was replaced. They also checked the injectors and found part number to be part of the affected parts so new fitted. Car was collected the next day. Time will tell if my confidence in the car not failing again has been cured but happy with the service at the local VW dealer who dealt with everthing. Sounds very much like VW know about the issue and will fix FOC if a car exhibits a cutting out fault.

My 2006 TDI passat had an injector fault while towing my caravan on the M5 this summer. It was repaired by a local indepenent garage near to our campsite in Devon, who diagnosed the fault. This was covered by an existing warranty we took out when we bought the car. However we decided to have the other three injectors replaced for peace of mind, at an additional cost of £1830. Recently having read the threads on this and other websites about this fault, we approached VW customer care explaining what had happened and how disappointed we were given VW`s reputation for reliability.

We were pleasantly surprised at their response to our letter and in a susequent phone call indicated that they would be reimbursing us for the 3 injectors and car hire charges which we incurred.

The message is to approach VW firmly but politely and they are willing to put things right. The new injectors have been modified and are guaranteed for 2 years. Of course this does`nt excuse the potential danger of a car suddenly cutting out on a motorway, and would advise anyone contemplating buying a passat of this model to check that modified injectors have been fitted.

I haven't heard of problems with the CR engine, which was fitted to the Passat I think in 2008. The DPF itself I think is bigger on the CR engine so can go for loinger before regeneration.

Make sure your annual mileage justifies a diesel - although in Latvia diesel may be cheaper than petrol, unlike in the UK.

The CR engine is a lot quieter and the power feeds in gradually rather than all at once. A dealer should have the knowledge to tell one from the other as they look diffrent; and the serial numbers should be different - e,g, on a Skoda Octavia the number on a label stuck to the floor of the boot begins with B for PD, C for CR.

hi i have a 2006 VW Passat 2.0 TDI sport . this morning (14/12/2011) i recieved a letter from VW recalling my passat for this very problem , all though my car is not playing up yet . They admit in the letter that there is a problem with small electically conducting carbon deposits settling on the piezo pump injector elements , this can sort circuit the piezo pump injector element ,which can cause running problems and cause the engin to stop .

Today I recieved a letter from VW advising of a Customer Satisfaction Campaing - Passat "206 Piezo Injector Quote from letter

"VW passat sport "2.0 TDI engine of a limited period small electrically conducting carbon deposits can settle on the Piezo Pump Injector elementsafter being carried in the engine oil. This can lead to running problems and in some cases to a short circuit of the Piezo Pump Injector element, which can cause engine running problems and in certain circumstances the engine to stop.

I have an 06 VW Passat TDI 2.0S I was driving back fel
Cornwal on Sunday and my engine suddenly cut out-it was really dangerous and was so lucky it happened where it did as I was nearly about to hit the motorway and could have caused a really bad accident had I been in the outside lane!
Anyway, my local garage replaced the wiring loom by it was still showing up with a fault (turns out to be the injectors as with many of yours)
VW have offered to replace these!
However my local garage also said the ECU could now also be faulty! I had never had problems before, could the injectors have caused the wiring loom problem and the ECU problem all together?

When the injector fails it usually puts a short circuit back to the ECU, this stops the high voltage inverter for all 4 injectors, so the engine stops.The ECU has protection circuits built in that should stop any damage being done to the ECU. If the ECU has failed as a direct result of the injector failue VW should be paying for that too IMHO.

It could be a problem with the loom but is most likely to be a failed injector. As VW are offering free replacements it seem like a no brainer to get them replaced. VW will run a diagnostic before they do anything & should advise you if they think it is a different problem.

Having read these theads it seems to me the only safe way to buy a VW diesel is to go for a 1.9 PD circa 2002/2003 which had bosch injectors. Is this correct ?

The 2.0 TDis seem to be plagued with oil pump failures but wahat about the modern 1.6 TDIs.

Can some one with all the knowledge suggest which VW/Audi engine/gearbox combinations are safe to buy going back to say 2000.

Th biggest problem with the old ones is that they are now pretty old. They were generally bought to do big mileages due to the good fuel economy, so they've usually got massive mileage on them now because of that !

The 1.9 tdi was a very good engine. The simple fact is that it was in use from the 1980's through to 2008 (I think), with gradual improvements should tell you a great deal.

Another 'good'un' was the 2.5 tdi. Torquey, with loads of grunt, it would really shift, even when pushing along an Audi A6 estate (I had the 150bhp version in a 2000 estate with a 6-speed manual box)

But, as I've already said, all these cars are now very long in the tooth. When I sold my 2.5 it had 147,000 miles on, and that was in 2007.

The ideal in that type ? Probably a Skoda Octavia/Superb from as late as possible (2008 maybe ?), with a manual gearbox. Find one that's been over-serviced, and cross your fingers ...

The one to avoid seems to be the 2.0 PD. There have been fewer problems with the common-rail diesels (in VWs from 2008, Skodas from spring 2009).
