Do not have the V5C yet but needs to tax car. - starfield

Hi all

I have just bought a second hand nissan micra for my wife. I have bought insurance yesterday, the car came with a year's mot and tax till the end of the month.

I do not think i will receive a reminder from the DVLA, to take with me to tax the car.

How do i tax the car if i only have the V5C/2 (the little green slip) and the docs mentioned above without the reminder from the DVLA.

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

  • New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2)
  • insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
  • valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
  • the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

How far ahead can you apply, DVD? I'm picking a car up on Sept.1st, but it would be useful to get the tax disc in advance...

Your a new owner so dont have a reminedr which gives you some 25 days before old one expires.

With the V5C you can only get a new disc on the first day that one is due.

I will just have the new owner supplement. I want to tax it on the 31st so I can collect the car on the 1st, with the tax disc in my sweaty paw - is that doable?

From the DVLA site:

When to apply

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.

Thank you, Doc - exactly what I wanted to know. I hadn't spotted that on the site, and I tried phoning them up, but got caught in their labyrinthine options system, as they really, really don't want you to talk to a real person! I hung on for five minutes then gave up.

i have the pleasure to let you know that i manage to tax the vehicle only with those 3 docs:

mot certificate, motor insurance certificate and the V5C/2.

thanx a lot for your help
