Ford Focus 2 1.8 TDCI - Ford servicing. Beware! - Ben 10

Took my almost 3 year old '07 Focus in to Main Ford dealership today to have the aircon regassed.

This they duly did then phoned me to say the pollen filter was totally blocked. I had noticed reduced airflow from vents over last few months. They stated it had not been changed since it came out of the factory. This item should be changed as part of yearly service.

So the Ford independant garage I had used for the last two services, had not changed the pollen filter. Replacing it cost me almost £60. I will be taking this up with the garage concerned and contacting Ford Customer Relationship Dept.

I always though the big Ford garages would scrimp and charge for fictitious work or parts. And the small independant would carry out a thorough job.

Wrong on this one. Beware whoever you get serviced with. Especially when you have to get the thing serviced for the warranty.

Exactly whey we get cars in warranty services at a main dealer.

Might cost a few pounds more but . . . . . .

Hi Ben, I'm uncertain as to your meaning of "Ford independent garage". I get the feeling you are saying it is a Ford franchise but not part of a larger dealership group.

As long as it is a Ford franchise, I would check that replacing the filter WAS part of the service schedule & not simply something that needed checking & replacing if required (& at your cost, presumably?)

Yes Bonzo,

Small family owned garage with a Ford Franchise. Ford signage, logos, overalls, paperwork etc.

The checklist on the last service had pollen filter renew. The technician ticked the box OK. Probably didn't even open up to have a look. Dagenham motors today said it should have been changed on the last service as a matter of course.

highly unlikely that there was anything wrong with the aircon and that the blocked filter was your problem. I regard checking pollen and air filters(depending on car as some require some work to access eg pre LCI 330d) as a diy issue. Tou should perhaps find out how to check/change your own?

I've actually got a filter at home to put on the wifes Focus. As the car was "in" and they were ready, I just told them to carry on. It is a bit of a pain fitting these on the Mk2 so I thought I'd get it done properly. My issue is that it should have been replaced before. Out of warranty I'll do the honours with oil, filters etc.

When you see where the pollen filtre is situated and how long the guys get to do the service, you can understand the reluctance to change it .

It all sounds fairly normal to me. When the Citroen dealership serviced my car before selling it to me, not only did they tick boxes on the service schedule that I suspected hadn't been touched (pollen filter was one...), they also ticked boxes that only applied to diesel cars. My car is a petrol.

It seems to me the technician/service desk person who filled in the checklist didn't even know what car it was for.

I get my cars serviced by the dealer whilst under warranty, but I do my own interim services. Once out of warranty, I do all the work myself.

It means getting your hands dirty, but I love it!

It would save an awful lot of dealer time if the checklist was pre-ticked:) And about as much use as the diy list by all accounts.

Has this Ford Independent Garage ever actually charged you for changing the pollen filter, ie was it listed on any bill?

Yes it was. Part of the parts replaced on the yearly service.

Wow, the original OP is still here to reply lol. I wouldn't have asked the question if I had looked at the date of the original post. Why do people keep reviving old threads and bringing them back to the top???
