FIAT Grande Punto - Fiat Grande Punto 36,000 mile service - mdavies033

I own a Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 16v Dynamic Sport 57' reg and have just been quoted £440 for a 36,000 mile service at my local Fiat dealer - Thames Fiat Slough. This seems fairly excessive to me, can anybody help?

Also I am worried that if I stray away from the main Fiat dealer network I will void the warranty for my car?

Cheers,

Miles

Hi, Miles

I`m not saying or implying this is the case with your quote. But I`ve known Main Dealers, at the last warranty service, have a desperate (often were-wolf like gorging) last bite at the cherry before it disappears forever into the DIY, or Independents for servicing.

It seems to me they often do little other than oil & filters -- plus perhaps a set of plugs. But lot`s of checking/tickboxing -- then you look at the car yourself and find chafing pipes and so on.

Assuming the 3yr warranty is almost up anyway, if it`s an 07 model?

Its a 57 reg model so yes you're right, the warranty will be up shortly - Sept 10!

I think it is a fairly detailed check from what they say, i'm going to try and haggle them down a bit, but I just don't want it to detract away from the re-sale value if i decide to change cars in the next 6 months?

It takes less than 1 hour to fully service a Punto they are totally ripping you off.

I was thinking the same, to be honest.

Try ringing up other dealers. The 36k service is not very involved, mainly oils and filter and the usual checks. I was quoted less than £150 for a three year old GP a few months ago,but did it myself in the end. The timing belt is ok for another 36k.There can be a large difference between what garages charge. Don`t let them fob you with the old "menu pricing" con. Many Fiat agents ignore these structured prices.

This really is excessive. The last warranty service I paid for on a Hyundai two years ago, which also included the cam belt change( the car was near its 50,000 mile limit), was £ 360. This is a bit rich for a glorified oil change, but dealers can be like that as, unless you're buying another car from them, they know after the warranty expires you won't be using them for servicing and want as much as they can get from you. I saved £ 150 last year on a major service on a Nissan which was post warranty by using a local idependent even though I got the usual begging letter about how important it was to use a main dealer. Same as in the autumn it will only need an oil and filter change that most reputable independents will do for £ 30.
