09 2.2 Climate control on Diesel - woefull output - Culmore
Hi, we bought a 2.2 CDTi a few months ago, apparently it was the Sales managers company car , and had low mileage. We have two issues with the Climate Control.

Firstly it takes 30mins minimum of driving before the car starts to heat up. Secondly even with the Climate control at MAX (28degrees) running for 40mins the car gets warm, but no more. We have tested the temperature within the car by using household digital thermometers, and cannot get them to read any more than 20 degrees. We ran with two units in parallel so that we had a benchmark to verify that they were both giving the same reading.

It has been back to the local dealer twice but they are telling us that the cause is due to the engine being so efficient that it takes a while to heat !! as if we believe that Bull !!

At a cost of 24K we are seriously not impressed with Honda ownership so far.

We have requested they provide detailed specification output for the Climate control, but they told us Honda don't have any.

We e-mailed Honda 8 days ago requesting the same information, and are still waiting to hear from them - Customer service ?? - we are not impressed.

Anyone else had to deal with Honda direct? what's your experiance.

Any one else got an Accord that suffers from similar problems? according to the dealer they are all the same !

The car has also been in to the 'dealers' (note the correct spelling!) to have the tracking checked, as the 'Toe' was apparently out causing a pull to the left. Cost £80 just for the privilage of being informed it was caused by driver damage.

There is also a very minor issue with the clutch pedal making a creaking noise - we have waited for 3 weeks now for 1 of the 9 parts required to repair it - at least this is being done under warrenty - assuming it does actually resolve the problem.

Modern CR diesels are very thermo-dynamically efficient and can take a long time to warm up accordingly the climate/heating system also has to be very efficient is recovering any heat it can from the engine during the warm up phase.

Does it have a manual setting, i.e. climate off?

You could suggest that the dealer replaces the thermostat, it may be that precious warmth is being disipated by the radiator.

Hi Cheddar,

many thanks for the reply. Sorry the Wife is away on business at the moment and the Car is sitting at the Airport. I think the AC can be manually switched off. I will check on Wednesday on her return with the car.

All my diesel cars have taken a while to warm up but once warmed up the temperature can certainly get above 20 deg C. Sounds like the warming up time is simply because its a diesel but there may be a problem stopping temperature getting above 20 deg C.

Don't turn the A/C off as that is acting in reverse as a heater and 'pumping' heat from the warm air at the back of the radiator into the cabin. My A/C in the office can be used to heat and even in these 1degC outdoor temps, it manages to find heat within that to 'pump' inside.
It sounds at though something is not functioning correctly. Try running the blowers at a slower speed and on recirculate.

Car a/c doesnt usually have this reverse mode, its cooling only.

Diesels heat up more slowly than petrols, but the thermostat should ensure it gets there in the end.
Check out the temp of the heater hoses (two rubber hoses in the engine compt. that go into the cabin and feed the heater matrix). You may have some kind of airlock or problem with the climate that means it is diluting the hot air with cold air.
With engine up to temp (15 mins driving) the hoses should be at 80 degrees or so.

SOunds very much like a problem with the cooling system- airlock, thermostat, loss of coolant etc.

Diesels do take an age to reach operating temperature, the VW PD units are slow heaters, taking 20 minutes to reach operatiing temperature. The climate control does not work (in heating mode) until it has.

Where did you measure the temperature output of the heat?

Got to disagree AE - the PD does take 20 minutes to warm up but mine does start putting out warm air quite quickly, usually within 5 minutes. Really hot air does need a hot engine though.

We placed the thermometers in the cabin, one on the dash where the Sat Nav screen is, the other near the gear leaver console.

Many Thanks for the suggestion, what is the best method for measuring the temperature of the hoses?

We have some little infra red temp measuring devices in the workshop, but you could probably judge by hand. The heater hoses should be too hot to comfortably grip.

This is excellent, I can't thank you enough for identifying this material. I will willingly quote this to honda if I feel they are just trying to flannel me.

I don't understand why neither the dealer nor Honda appear to want to take this complaint seriously - especially given the 'boasting' that Mr Nagahire has done.

It is very dissapointing that the dealer has not thought it worth while exploring some of the suggestions in the reply's I have had to my posting. Nearly as dissapointing as to the fact that I am still waiting on a response from Honda UK - after two weeks !! They did appologise in response to my second e-mail and promised contact the next day - that was a week ago!!
