Incorrect car details on insurance - sultana
I am currently claiming insurance after my car was hit in the rear by a massive Merc Sprint van 2 weeks ago. It didn't look too bad but yesterday i was told it was a write-off. Now there's something that i've noticed on my Mum's insurance policy on which i am a named driver - the car registration number is wrong. The 2 end letters are the wrong way around. Nobody's queried this or anything.

If the insurance co. realise this, are they going to use this in any way against me? Should i tell them now or just keep quiet? They are claiming off the other guy anyway, so will this affect me?
I'd appreciate some help here, thanks!

If it's of any help, my insurance policy says ............

"Insured Vehicle: means the motor vehicle (and/or its accessories) specified in your current Schedule, Certificate or any Motor Cover Note."

The only definition/description of the vehicle on my Certificate is a reference to its registration number. I assume that if my certificate had the wrong registration number on it my insurer could argue that the insurance applied to a vehicle other than mine.

I wouldn't worry.

I would be more concerned that you have just admitted insurance fronting which will result in invalid insurance.

And there are probably enough details in the original post for the insurer to identify the claim.

Check it on the MID www.askmid.com/ it may be just a typo.
If you have managed to tax the vehicle then the thing must be insured or the Post Office and/or DVLA would have spotted it sooner.

Yes, this could be more trouble.

noticed on my Mum's insurance policy

It all depends on the insurance company.

Intially they will check who the other car is registered to avd are they connected with you - then may pay. But most won't pay up because of the CC - clause - 'read to ensure details are correct.. otherwise insurance is invalid.'

The car that I currently drive is legally owned by my fiancee, but insured in my name. My insurance company is fully aware of this. Perhaps the OP's insurance company is also aware?

Thank you for your advice. I've been on the ask.mid - the car's not there!! But yesterday I phoned the DVLA and they have the car on their database, it's all registered there. What am i going to DO??

By the way - the car is my Mum's and in her name, so that's not a problem.
Incorrect car details on insurance - sultana
Thanks to everyone who replied. That's my mistake - the car is in Mum's name and i'm a named driver. But should i tell them about the registration number?

The car and insurance might be in your mum's name, but are you the main (or only) driver. If so that is still "fronting" and your insurance cover may be withdrawn if the insurance company discover this.

I agree and you may well get a few searching questions from your insurer. If you are the man driver of the vehicle you must tell your insurer.

I'm almost 50 - years ago it was the dove thing - at 18, my first car, 1660E cortina, fathers ivs, me namedbut i was the main driver & even when stopped by the fuzz, I bragged about it - those days they did naff all. However, if the ins co finds out you are the main driver, could be done for fraud, but unlikely.

Yes, a fraud prosecution is possible but unlikely. However an insurer refusing the claim is a rather more likely.

But the question is about the incorrect registration number on the insurance! Does the reg on the insurance match any vehicle at all on the AskMID database (I know that's two references to database).

Why do people have to assume the worst there really are some self righteous wotsits on here

I am a named driver on both my sons' insurance, I drive each car about 4 times a year, if I have an accident on one of these journeys am I going to be accused of using them to front for me?

Please folks let's get less judgemental

Someone is only fronting if the named driver is really the main driver there is NO repeat NO evidence that this is the case for the OP

rant over...

Nice one Commerdriver.

I hate the way these quite innocent threads seem to get hijacked by the holier-than-thou brigade.
By the end of it the OP is already feeling like he's on trial and a guilty verdict has been handed out.
Sultana's probably already feeling bad enough having been shunted up the chuff by white van man in his mum's car.

It really is all down to if the insurance company except it was there mistake and who ever took your call wrote the wrong registration down . The fact that the letters are in wrong place could point to that happening

I think it is a lesson to us all to check the insurer issues the motor insurance certificate with the correct details .

Fronting is nothing new and has been going on for years but my advice to anyone is do not do it ! Insurance companies are pretty smart and would soon guess if the car was insured by your mother and had a high powered sound system or the like installed they may ask questions .

I know the cost of insurance for youngsters is costly but they have to build there NCD up sometime so in the long run its better to do your own insurance especially if you take the pass plus test as this will give you extra discount and the start of your policy

Thank you Mr Snutz and Commerdriver! You guys are so right!

I have been feeling bad and guilty enough already - we only had the car for over a year. Everyone seems to think I'm some hormonal spotty 17 yr old who's just passed their test - I'm a single mum and have been driving for almost 20 years without any claims. Never has the thought to defraud anyone ever occurred to me. The car is shared between my Mum and i who live together - nothing underhand there.

Anyway, the upshot of this all is that we have received a reasonable amount of insurance money already, and no-one's queried anything - so I assume all is ok. Thanks for your supportive comments.

It's strange that the OP refers to "my car" then changes it to "mum's car" when the insurance problem is pointed out. I asked the OP if they were the main driver but their has been no reply.

We are not saying anything are we until we know some facts. Fronting might be another problem they or anyone needs to resolve but the question was about the wrong reg number.

I was an innocent transposition of 2 letters, the make and model of the car are presumably correct.....with no intent to defraud, I can see no reason why an insurance company would be able to refuse liability.

In fact their own checks on the car should have shown it as not being the correct make and model for the numberplate. I wouldn't worry about it and simply get your mum to ring them up and say she has just noticed the transposed letters.....everything will be fine.
Incorrect car details on insurance - sultana
This is a simple and genuine mistake, as i pointed out before. My Mum put more money into the car, we live at the same address and we share it - she has been noted as the main driver. I didn't even know what "fronting" was until i posed my problem! And as far as I am concerned, that is not the issue.

But I would like you to know that we have received a reasonable amount from the insurance company without any problems (so far!)

Just be aware that if you use the car for anything regularly, particularly travelling to and from work, college or whatever, then the insurance may look very hard at any claim you make which appears to be related to commuting.
And as far as I am concerned that is not the issue.

Correct. The other guy hit you so your cover is irrelevent.
Incorrect car details on insurance - cuthbert
One thing which has not been pointed out is that car registrations are flagged up on the DVLA data base so when the car was insured it should have been spotted that the car make and model did not match the registration .!! Therefore that is why I think it was a typing error on the insurance certificate by the keyboard operator
