Following on from the recent tirade of all things gallic (i agree!), what are the collective views of this most beautiful, yet fairly heavily depreciating (is that a clue!) coupe. I know they are assembled by Pininfarina in Italy, a country not renowned for build quality but I suspect any company doing niche assembly for mitsubushi must be ok (Shogun Pinin build quality any good?) possibly better than the french build saloons and estates? I quite fancy the v6 model or the 2.2hdi when it ages. What is this v6 like to maintain and run, it was updated to 210hp plus better economy in 2000. I can handle the odd gremlin as long as the core build is strong and the engine is not an oil burner, my last peugeot 205 gti put me off the marque for life... stalling, coughing, smoking thing that it was but beautiful on the right road and to be fair the body was still corrosion free.

Thanks, Ian

My Dad had a 406GTi. Lasted to it's second birthday and 150k miles with no problems. Fantastic car. Best he's ever had. Built really well too.

He currently has a 316i which is a pile of cr*p. Certainly no better than the Pug.

I've been in a 3L coupe and thought it was great. DOn't know what they're like to own though...

rattles in windows, in dash, lights in dash die every few months, air con b*****ed, cooling fan b*****ed, radiator leak, trim falling off, steering wheel shakes at high speed, weak performance (1.9td), interior light fell from above, rattle in door that grates on me, gearbox horrible, rear windscreen dimister works occassionaly.

on the other hand it's never physically broken down.

Still, i don't expect this of a car, or is it just me being picky!

Maybe my old man was lucky.

His was silent, no niggling problems at all. Great handling at all speeds (trust me I know!!! ;-) )

Performance was great. 150bhp all of it at about 1800 revs. [1]

No electrical problems at all.

[1] I'm exagerating but it was powerful and torquey!

Owned my 406 LX 2.0 petrol for three years. No problems to speak of so far apart from being a little underpowered (although it does shift if you rev the n*ts off it). Great load lugger and the ride quality is excellent. I think the 406 is quite well specified for its class. Get 34 mpg overall. My main criticism would be that it's quite hard on tyres and brakes (think HJ mentions rear brake wear in the car by car).

Generally I'm pleased

Strange beast the 406. most are fine, great cars that should last very well.

However if you get a dud it'll be a real dud and it'll be almost impossible to ever get it to work properly.

I think this applies to all French cars. Funny, we've had about 15, and apart from 2 that had been crunched and rebuilt, all have been excellent. Just don't tell everybody as the prices will start to go up.....

Well, speaking as someone who actually owns a 406 coupe, rather than someone whose dad used to know someone who owned a 405 and they're all the same aren't they these French cars...

I have to say that I am more than happy with my '98 V6 (in bright red, surely the best colour but only rarely seen), bought second-hand from a main dealer. It (she?) has needed attention to the manifold pressure sensor under warranty but that's it. I get 30 to the gallon, turn lots of heads, have loads of luggage space, and with 197 horses can make rapid progress when required. I have lost count of the times I have read that the 406 coupe is one of the most beautiful cars on the road, in my experience when bought well it is also one of the most practical and affordable.

Peugeot 106s & 205s on the other hand, well don't get me started..

don't get me wrong the 406 and 406 coupe look the part as with many other peugeots, but what has actually happened within the life of your car?

i.e what apart from petrol or diesel have you spent on the car?
Peugeot 406 Coupe - thoughts? - steve
Not sure how much you are thinking of spending but have you looked at the price of (slightly ageing) BMW 325/8 coupe or Mercedes e320 coupe?

Bought 406 2.0 SE brand new in red with black leather. Don't buy the fabric seats cos they look sad. It was the best car I ever owned. Build quality and reliability over 45k miles was fine, but lots of snagging elec problems with seat motors, elec mirrors, radio, all replaced under warranty. Irritating rather than annoying. However all you have to do is look at the thing cleaned and gleaming on driveway and you will forgive. 2.0 litre abit slow, but acceptable, and petrol consumption good at 35-37mpg on m'way . The handling is absolutely fantastic. The JBL speakers on SE trim are awesome. All the elec goodies (cruise,wipers,seats,6CD)on the SE make it special, don't buy the base model - you'll regret it. Leather on 2000X forward is much nicer than older models. 3.0V6 must be heaven.
