I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction... My wife's Y-Reg Focus is making a whining noise under reasonable hard acceleration. It's noticeable in the higher gear ranges (3-5), and seems to be a whine/fast tinny ticking/rattling sound, it's difficult to tell. The car's done 69k, a gradual acceleration and the sound isn't there, it's more when you put your foot down. The performance hasn't changed since the sound started, around 2 weeks ago.
Would be either a slipping timing belt squeaking rapidly, or turbo problem sound like they might be likely culprits with the 1.8 TDDi (90) engine? I've heard of 'turbo whine' but I'm not sure what kind of sound this generates. In terms of turbos, is this getting into expensive-to-fix territory?
Ford want £85 just to look at it for an hour, it's got to the stage where I need to find a good independent garage in/around Derby methinks. Again - any suggestions would be most welcome!

Turbo whine is a high-pitched whistling noise, bit like a mini jet engine. Turbo bearing or shaft wear would cause a rattling sound. It's unlikely to be the timing belt but that might be worth a look anyway, especially if it's close to the belt change interval.
If you can source a fairly cheap second-hand turbo from either ebay or a breakers yard and you are confident enough to change it yourself, it might be worth trying. A new turbo will cost a lot and probably a reconditioned one not much cheaper.
If you are fitting it yourself, let the engine tick over for 2-3mins after starting to let the oil circulate right round the turbo before driving.
The 1.8 TDDi engine followed on from the 1.8 turbo in the Escort, Mondeo, Sierra etc so getting a second hand one shouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately I'm not handy enough to change a turbo myself - is this very labour-intensive? There's a Ford breakers near me, so I think I could get my hands on one, would it be reasonable to ask a garage for diagnosis, source the part myself and ask them to fit it?
Any guess on the likely cost of a secondhand turbo/ and an idea of likely time taken to fit it?
It's a tricky situation if it's a load of cash - the car's 8 years old and not worth very much!

I'm not sure how easy or hard it would be to change the turbo, if you can trace the exhaust manifold either at the front or the back of the engine, the turbo will be bolted on to that. It should give you a rough idea of what's involved.
I don't think a garage would have a problem diagnosing and fitting if you get the turbo. I reckon the turbo would be about £50 - £250 second-hand and it should take about 1 - 2 hours to fit. I know Fords had a reputation for being fairly easy to work on and I think it is still the case.
