Family member is a named driver in a motor insurance policy for 3 years. She is 34 and thought best to get her own policy. She passed her test 3 years ago. Does any insurers offer NCB for named drivers or does she has to start from nil NCB?

Direct line.

My partner was a named driver on our only car for a few years.
When we got her a car, they gave her my full NCB which then became her own after one year claim free.

That was a few years ago. I think it was on a 'second car in household deal' and I am fairly sure that I had to be a named driver on the policy.

Not sure if it's awarded retrospectively though.

Who is your insurer? The Co-operative Insurance offer up to 3 years NCD for named drivers when they apply for their own policy. The benefit can't be transferred to another company. tinyurl.com/o3eg8j

I'd been a named driver on my wife's Norwich Union Direct insurance for years then got my own car when I opted out of the company car scheme. Norwich Union Direct gave me a really good deal - far lower than their website would suggest.

Privilege. My wife was a named driver on my policy. When we put the second car in her name she was given maximum NCD, the second car discount, and introductory discount.

Doesn't this usually only apply if you apply to the company with which you have been a named driver? Or do these companies accept named drivers from another company's policy? I'm pretty sure this is the way Direct Line worked when I looked into this a few years back.

To the best of my knowledge, you are 100% correct.

Strange. Two years ago, Privilege [after talking to a senior manager with a "computer says no" syndrome] refused to give any discount for a 2nd car for the many years I had two cars insured with them [though I continued to use them as they were still the best deal individually]. They lost my business when they refused to give any NCD to a named driver with an impeccable driving record. This is despite the fact that Direct Line and Privilege are stablemates. Direct Line got the business then as they accepted the Privilege record as if it was their own.
