Injector cleaner - can anyone recommend a good one? there are so many to chose from
Do they actually work - is it worth adding some every month or buying a more expensive one that you use every 4K?
Finally do i need to take the car for a good blast once i have put the cleaner in?

Good, clean diesel fuel from the pump is all you should need.

I just rev the bejasus out of my diesel under load for a minute or two a couple of times a week. Seems to clean everthing up well enough. Judging by the cloud of smoke it temporarily produces anyway. If you do it again shortly afterwards it is as clear as day.

However, borne of long experience, I am a fairly fundamentalist believer that nothing but fuel goes in the tank, nothing but the recommended oil goes into the oil filler, and nothing but the correct coolant goes into the header tank. The engines are tested and developed to work with pump fuel - if there are any further requirements, they'll be listed in your owner's manual.
In the case of my E300D, there is a specific instruction to not use fuel additives. What does the owners manual for the OP's car say on the matter?

Not long ago I checked the label on a can of petrol injector cleaner.
It contained 'Jet fuel', We used to fill the old paraffin stoves with it, Esso blue !

I know a long and involved joke about two guys who tried drinking jet fuel while working at Heathrow. Anyway the short version is that one of them decided to have a fag and.....um...."coughed" and ended up in Tokyo......
To return to the question, all I can add is that I've run a lot of diesel engines to big miles and never felt the need to add anything to the fuel. Just rev it a bit hard from time to time and they sort themselves out.

All the black smoke which comes out of the back when you boot it is just soot which has gathered in the exhaust - yes, it's good to get rid, but don't imagine that you're actually cleaning the engine - however, it's a treatment I reserve for when BMWs pretend to be my trailer!
IMO, the best thing for keeping engines clean is good long runs where the coolant and the oil get up to temperature - most deposit forming processes are very temperature dependent.

The OP is interested in cleaning his injectors.
Anyone who thinks that diesel injectors clean themselves in normal operation running on everyday fuel is just kidding themselves. All diesel injectors cake up with carbon deposits over time, eventually affecting spray patterns and atomisation leading to inefficient combustion.
The ideal way to clean an injector is to remove them and have them professionally cleaned, but additives can be effective.

proper diesel from a reputable garage that turns over the stuff daily
and if you take an engine with this done it will be clean as the day it was made
last time i saw this was last year a merc 2.5 diesel with 100,000 it was clean as a whistle inside the engine but then the maintainance was proper

I'm a big fan of injector cleaners.
Adding them might not do any good, but they make you feel as if they have done some good and the car definately seems to run better afterwards, even if it is only in your own imagination.
What price a contented mind?

For diesels, it's quite a cheap trick - there's usually some cetane improver in there, and so, the engine will run quieter while that's floating around the fuel system. If your engine is designed to run on fuel of a given cetane rating, then, there's no reason to go beyond that.

Note to self : Dont buy a Merc diesel as even properly maintained they need the engine stripping down at only 100k miles.

Functionally, injectors must do just that. This is done mainly by good thermal management - keeping the injector hot enough to burn off oily deposits without becoming hot enough for significant ash to form. It's a delicate balancing act.
Getting the temperatures of different parts of the engine right, to avoid deposit formation is one of the many things tha are done much more effectively on modern engines.

So a diesel engine that's run for over six years and 90,000 miles without ever receiving a drop of additive in its fuel must be a carboniferous mess inside and running at a fraction of its true efficiency? Hmmm. That was mine I just described, and it seems to be running like new - or better.

My 1.7 corsa dti has 122000 and has been treated to Wurth injector cleaner.
It has transformed the car and now goes like a rocket.No smoke etc. Well worth the money,I can highly recommend it.

I know this is an old thread but it still quite popular, the best one buy a county mile is miller oils Eco max, i work at www.injectorshop.co.uk and its the only one i have seen make a difference on results on my test bench the Redex does not even make any difference at all, don't be shy either with the miller oil i use a good few fills of the neck in half a tank.
Diesel additives are to help maintain your system once you have problems means you haven't maintained it so its probably to late best just to buy replacement you will save money on fuel and on another note stop using supermarket fuel is a good idea.
