99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - Hokum
Hi, I'm new on the site so be gentle ;)

I was driving home last night when my engine died, revs just dropped to zero and cut out. After pulling over, i tried to start the ignition, but it just turns over and doesn?t catch.

I called the AA and he did a quick check, and the engine is getting fuel but he wasn?t sure if it was the pump not giving enough pressure. The ford garage i got dragged to worried me saying it could be the cambelt (its only done 75k). Does that sound likely? Would the engine turn over as usual if the cambelt had gone?

If it is the fuel pump is it likely to be expensive to repair?

Please ask if you need more info.

I guess it *could* be a lot of things.

Did it just die quietly or was there a bang?

Just passed out, no bang or rattle (i had an alternator belt come off another car and it didnt sound like that) It was as if i had turned off the engine while driving.

Any half competent mechanic should be able to prove or eliminate the cambelt within minutes. My old company ran a fleet of these and all hit 100k with no trouble before the belts were changed, but these were <3yrs old at the time. Belts age, as well as wear with miles.
It could be something daft like a sensor or a wiring problem. I would expect any dealer worth their salt to be able to pinpoint the exact nature of the problem within an hour's "diagnostic" labour. If they can't, get the car out of there and take it to someone who can. These are not complex engines by modern diesel standards.

Its at a Ford dealer, so i hope they would know what their doing, the AA guy didn't mention the cambelt (maybe cause he didn't know).

So I really hope its something simple (and cheap?) like a fuel filter clog (though the car had a full service only in feb so it should have a new filter) or a sensor fault.

I seem to remember it's an 80k. belt change on these.Changed mine at 60.

They said to me its 10 years/100k the car is just under one and well under the other.

An engineer hasnt called me yet, it was the manager on the desk who mentioned the cambelt.

I thought the petrol was 100k not the diesel.

Oddly no, but i had considered doing a Basil Fawlty and hitting it with a tree branch.

It's a 100k belt on these. It's an odd set up with a chain driven injection pump, and then a short cambelt running off the injection pump pulley. The cambelt doesn't do anything other than drive the cam IIRC. They certainly go the distance mileage-wise, but then given this engine's predecessor's reputation for lunching cambelts, I suspect Ford paid particular attention in this area.

I hope its not the cam belt, if its a cheap job i'll probably get them to change it at the same time, as i fouldnt want it going.

So to go back to a question i asked, does anyone know if the engine would sound like it was normally turning over if the cam belt had gone? As thats just how it sounds.

That agrees with my (admittedly 03/2003 edition) Warranty and Service Guide. Check yours for confirmation of this.

L'escargot,

As your car is 2003, it's almost certainly a TDCi, which is the next generation engine, so service intervals may be different.

The TDCi was the first Ford common-rail, hence the 'C'.

The TDDi was direct injection, hence the 'D'.
99 1.8 HELP! My TDDI Focus (99V) just passed out! - DP
The TDDi and TDCi engines ran concurrently in the Focus mk1, right up until the model was replaced.

And the TDI(indirect injection)was in the Escort at the same time.

If it is the cam belt, and it looks expansive, it would probably be cheaper to pick up a 2nd hand block and swap it in wouldn't it? If so anyone have any ideas on how much an engine block swap would be?
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - bell boy
you mean an engine surely?
i would reckon at least $500 for an engine
plus new belt etc
plus the pump would need to be swapped for the immobilisor to work or the current pump if possible aligned to your keys
plus oil and filters
plus labour
plus you dont know until fitted if the replacement engine isnt a pile of poo that is worthlress
etc

sorry
no short cuts
see what garage says first and work from there
you might decide if engine is terminal to sell the car as a non runner and buy something different

I would have thought that if the car was cranking over as normal it wouldn't be the cambelt

One thing i forgot to mention, when it happened the glow plug light flashed. After reading alot on a focus forum it seems to suggest its more likely the fuel pump? Anyone have an idea?
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - Hokum
Well good (ish) news, its not the Cam belt. But it is fuel related, they are currently not sure if its a sensor or a pipe issue. I hope its not the pump gone.
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - Hokum
Ok not good news Ford are quoting me £2293 to replace a fuel pump! I was expecting something expensive like £1000 but thats laughable.
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - DP
So, they are effectively writing off your car. Have you spoken to them about other options? Will they fit a reconditioned pump (less than half the parts cost)? Are they absolutely sure that's even the problem? If I had a tenner for every time I'd known various dealers replace £1000 ECUs to fix faults that turned out to be a £15 sensor, I'd be a wealthy man.
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - Hokum
They mentioned the reconditioned pumps, but they said they wouldnt fit one as it isnt a ford part...

It's cost me £95 this far already! They tested (they say) to make sure it isnt a blockage or a kinked pipe, and that they have pumped fuel to the engine to make sure.

I have no idea what to do now... apart from maybe hope the gov bring in the £2000 to scrap scheme...

Hi mate, I had the same problem with my focus tddi, i got a brand new fuel pump having put that in my turbo soon went later, so end up scrapping the car. I still have the new pump still within the warrantry period, if you intrested let me know.
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - Hokum
New-new or a recon?

There's a pump for sale at a lo less in Classifieds.
99 1.8 TDDi - engine cut out, now won't start. - DP
ISTRC you will still need to pay someone to code the replacement pump to your car. The pump contains the gubbins for the immobiliser, as well as other settings that your ECU will need to know. They can't just be swapped over.

Cheers
