I took my Egr valve of to clean last night and was totally amazed at the amount of crud that had built up it had probably reduced the diameter by a third after intensive cleaning I replaced it and blocked of the vacuum pipe so that it now only runs on clean air, what a difference it has made may I suggest that anybody with a Mondeo or Jaguar diesel does the same before it totals their engine. Its hard to imagine that contaminated air being forced into the inlet manifold the damage it must cause over time does not bear thinking about.

How many miles has the car done, Andy?
I know a couple of VAG PD owners that have done this after about 50K miles and they said there was some carbon / sludge build up.
Also seen pics from the US where the EGR / inlet was almost totally blocked. This may be due to lower-quality US diesel, and slower driving ....

I have done this to all my diesels that have had EGR & it hasn't caused any problems & probably avoided many more.
My current 55reg PD 130 Passat is a bit more clever & put up the ' Emissions Workshop' warning after a few days, so think it must have a sensor in the exhaust somewhere.
You just have to put up with the warning beep at the start of every journey, otherwise it runs just fine.
My previous Y reg 130 PD didn't detect the lack of EGR.

@DieselNut, apparently post-2004 PD motors were sensitive to EGR disabling, my 2003 Passat 130 was quite happy with EGR vac pipe blocked
Can't say I noticed any difference in performance, economy, warm-up times etc.

Straight down the exhaust.Blocking the EGR either by removing the vacuum pipe or fitting a blanking plate will increase NOX emissions but will give a slight improvement in part-throttle performance and economy.Beware late models that have a feedback signal from the valve to the ECU;this could trigger fault signals and need code readfing.

Mine still runs fine, no change to performance.
Suspect it give slightly beter MPG as it's running on air rather than on part exhaust gas.
Just have to put up with the alarm beep every now and then.

I can't see any electrical sensor on the EGR valve that could feed back to the ECU though, so thought there must be a sensor in the exhaust somewhere.
But heho.
