01 1.7 inner CV knocking, can it fail completely? - mfarrow
Hi

Girlfriend's diesel corsa has developed an offside inner CV joint knock. There's a bit of free play and the noise has gradually been getting worse over the weekend. Above 30 it will now vibrate the steering wheel when off load.

She needs the car before next weekend, when I can do the work. My question is will it be OK before then (about 4 miles into work, then back, each day)? Are they prone to complete failure of drive? I've told her to keep off the right foot and take it easy speed wise.

Thanks.

How long is a piece of string?

If it's worn out replace it it may fail at anytime.

That's what I thought bigtee but her parents are saying "I've had CV joints going wrong for ages/never failed on me/it'll be fine/blah blah blah!"

If it's vibrating the steering wheel I think it is very near the end ot it's life.

rare to break up completely, are you sure it is inner?, outers wear the most, inners last a very long time.
Are you sure it is not just loose?, now that does vibrate big time, I know I've had it.
check all the bolts re the CV, has anyone been meddling?, not done them up.
Has the shaft hit anything?, bent it?
just a few thoughts.

I forgot to mention the mileage of 122k.

Yes, I'm positive it's the inner, lots of free play if I grab the driveshaft halfway along and wriggle it. Nothing at the outer end.

How would it come loose? I thought the only removable bit was the shaft circlip? Good point about the shaft, but there's been no imbalance until now.

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone know of somewhere online where I can purchase an inner CV joint? They seem to not come singular without the driveshaft?

Yes I did Dave, thanks, they were my first choice. Unfortunately they couldn't source one either, though they did knock a lot off the vauxhall retail (£130 inc. vs. £175 exc.).

But still, I can buy a new driveshaft for that.

Inner cv failure onthese is unusual.

Sure its not gearbox/diff ?

I'm pretty sure I checked the other side and that was OK. I can't be 100% that it's not the diff. that's gone, but the failure has been rather sudden. There is no fluid loss which I imagine would be present with a diff. failure of this magnitude.
