2/ yup profit... NOT safety, the cameras have been on the M25 for ages, Ive NEVER seen the reason for a slow down...in fact i was going anticlockwise in heavy rain, no restriction.. on the way back clear dry roads - 40MPH!!??

Presumably, but it doesn't look like one, and it doesn't appear to be mentioned in the highway code under "light signals controlling traffic". The closest match is the "no waiting" (sorry, not parking) red circle & diagonal with blue background, albeit rotated through 90 degrees. The NSL sign doesn't have a ring around it...

I was in lane 1 heading north yesterday afternoon in the Porsche, did move out a couple of times to overtake the occasional truck.
Other than that, left the CLOGs to lane 3, they seem desperate to claim it for their own. However its holiday season, where people unused to using motorways are prevalent and the standard of driving is always appalling.

I was on the M181 yesterday although not driving, there was speed cameras all over the police and where the wasn't a speedf camerea there were safety vans doing it. Apparantly its like that all the time. However its an empty motorway so you could probably easily do 120/130mph if you wanted to so I can see the point of the cameras there.

The M1 SPECS speed cameras were there to enforce the 50 limit I guess. I think they will stay there and be re-set to 70 on the basis that GB wants to have all major roads covered by SPECS cameras in the long term. He probably can't spell fun and doesn't know the meaning of the word anyway.

Eventually the Specs on this new stretch will alter for whatever speed is displayed. The new LED signs can display correctly enforceable signs with red circles etc etc. If it is lowered to 50 for a certain stretch the Specs will operate for that speed. Note the speed camera sign on every LED signed gantry...
However they are strictly and cleverly programmed - just one error or broken LED which causes or could cause the sign to be displayed incorrectly and the Specs will fail to operate.
It is early days yet hence the problems at the the moment, some of which include the NSL speed sign displaying opposite halves, flashing red circles with no speed indicated and random white dots flashing around. No doubt it will eventually be fully operational and speeds will be posted to reflect traffic flow, ie if there is a build up ahead the speeds will post up 50 to slow following traffic but keep it moving. The difference being that with specs and enforceable signs, people will actually do 50, whereas with the current older orange "guide" signs, 50 meant slowing to 70 from 90!
As pointed out the NSL speed sign is reversed, white on black instead of black on white, but it is supposed to be an NSL sign as opposed to anything to do with parking. The NSL signs have been posted randomly to indicate the removal of the 50 as so many people are used to it, and in fact *are* still bumbling along at 50.

Like to see a court accepting ' it's early days " from some one who has just passed their driving test and fallen foul of a traffic law .

I was suggesting that a new driver couldn't use the early days excuse in court if he broke a motoring law but you knew that all a long.

Actually, on reflection, Mr X you are right. New drivers should be allowed to kill and maim without fear of prosecution.
On the other hand, a computer glitch should result in the hanging of the programmer. That's why AE is so upset...

Quite, by early days I meant just that. Road opened for holiday season, signs and technology not yet ready for full deployment. Even when they are it will almost certainly run through a testing phase, including capturing speeding drivers to prove the system, however it will be a data excercise and not used to prosecute.
Any such system is designed to benefit the driver in the event of any error or failure. There is also a "grace" period to accompany any speed change, so if the speed jumps from NSL to 50 as you pass under the first gantry, you will not be penalised for not having seen it. This is similar to the M25 variable speed section - once the speed changes on the signs, the digital gatsos hidden behind each sign will not operate at the new speed for 60 seconds.
This will undoubtedly be the future of motorways. Think of the M42 pilot - although predominantly this is about using the hard shoulder in busy times, it uses road sensors to provide automatic queue detection, changing the signs to warn approaching cars, lowering the speed limit signs etc, has full CCTV coverage and speed monitoring equipment. Automatically Managed Motorways, the Highways Agency's buzzword for the future. Throw in ANPR and the motorways will be the most marked roads in the UK.

I've noticed one thing about the variable speed limit on the M25 . It is rarely ever as high as 70 mph and I have traveled that stretch at just about every hour on the clock. Why don't they just reduce the whole motorway network to 50 mph and be done with it.

Grisly journey thru the Midlands (Leicester to MK) last night but the new 4 lane stretch was a bit confusing re signage. Mimsers in Lane 3 doing an indicated 50 mph ie about 46 and being passed on both sides by people who knew the limit was 70. Mimsers being better safe than sorry I suppose!

Well I for one wish that something like this was done to the M8 for the rush hour into Glasgow. Vehicles come pelting through from the East and traffic grinds to a halt at the same points every day.
If instead the traffic was limited to, say 40 / 50 from a good few miles away it would help the traffic continue to move, and with that comes less stress, fuel consumption, pollution etc etc.
It sounds a damn good idea! A perfect example of, when working, that sometimes as motorists we need to let big brother control things as we are not all able to do so ourselves.
