Tried to put the key in ignition this morning and it wouldnt go all the way in, short by about 3mm, its as if there is something wedged in there, had a quick poke about but nothing came out so assume a pin has gone wayward, so looking at buying a new barrel, OK find one for £48 from GSF.
Now comes the problem, how the heck do I get the old barrel out?, pulled and pushed, poked and proded, cant work it out.

Nasty one, as to remove the barrel, you first have to turn the key. [Catch 22...]
Make sure that the centre of the barrel isn't stuck in, as this can prevent the key entering fully. Is the steering lock engaged?
Tried a squirt of something? Warming it gently?

Tried a squirt first this morning, no use, steering lock is engaged now, wasn't when I started, I wiggled the wheel and it clicked in (knew I shouldnt have!).
Centre of barrel stuck in?
I'll go and give it another prod and pay particular attention to the centre of the barrel.

No, centre of barrel appears to be as it should. I just cant get the key in that last few mm's.
Permission to hit it with a lump?
Is this going to turn into something expensive?
As its a diesel I dont suppose there's any way of doing without the key and hot wiring it either?

Try sliding a bit of thin piano wire in and jiggling all the tumblers. Sounds like one may have stuck.
Getting it started is possible; but you may have a little trouble with the steering bit.....

Been wiggling for ages, no use, wire goes all the way through the barrel no problem and moved the pins up n down, in n out but key still wont go in the last few mils, even tried an old key to see if that was any good, no such luck.
Any idea what I am looking at hours wise for a professional to come and remove and fit?
OH and any other ideas truly appreciated.

There may be a crafty trick to it; but, at that stage, I'd be reaching for the drill and a solid tungsten-carbide burr. Once the lock is destroyed, the barrel can be turned and removed fairly easily.
Talk to your dealer about replacement options; a lock built to your key is best - no dual-key or immob hassles.

Cheers Screwloose, I had a feeling it was going to have to be destruction time. But I will go for the GSF barrel, not at all bothered about having dual keys and as it's a C15 there is no immobiliser, so no problem there. I reckon a dealer supplied option would cost more than the value of the old jollopy.

I'd be very surprised if a 2000 van didn't have a chip-in-key immobilizer.
Is there a plastic key-reader ring around the lock?

Nope, and when I needed a new key it was just a quick cut and there you are sir.
This 2000 van also comes without:
air-con, air-bags, rear disc brakes, a stereo, a rev counter, a temp gauge, central locking, an alarm, electric anything, adjustable anything, a working heater.
But she is normally extremely reliable, although I suppose at 115k barrels and the like do pack up.

I think I'm in the wrong business, after hours of wiggling and hammering and without the adequate tools to drill out (and also without the adequate brains not to drill the wrong bit) I call out a locksmith.
30 minutes, £85 quid! he did have the correct tools and did as Screwloose suggested, drilled the barrel out with one meaty drill bit. He suggested it was probably an electrical problem that had caused the whole barrel to seize up, if it happens again I now know where to drill.
Ho hum suppose I had better go to work tomorrow then.
