97 1.4 CD Tuner doesn't turn on - rainy14f
Hi, I struggled two days trying to install a new CD tuner on my old P reg Polo but still can't make work. It doesn't turn on whatever I do. However, I noticed when I plug the wires in the tuner a red light on the front panel flashes which I think indicates the 12V contant power is connected properly. I guess it might be the 12v ignition feed the it requires that fails it. Anyway, this is just a guess. I checked all the fuses on the tuner and they are all fine. I also checked the right most fuse (which is supposed to be the one supports the audio and cigar) in the fuse box in the car and it's fine as well. Could please anyone give me some help on this? Thanks in advance.

There are 3 wires that are needed to make the radio work. The main power is the thick red wire;the earth is the thick brown wire. The 3rd key on power feed is a thin brown/red trace wire from the ignition switch. It is very possible on a car of this age that you have lost the power from the ignition due to a fault in the switch.Best option is to wire both power feeds to the radio from the large red wire but you will need to turn the radio off from its power switch when you leave the car,or remove the front if face off.hth

Thanks for your reply. Is there not any other way at all to make it work normally (such as fixing the switch, etc)? My previous radio worked very well without any prloblem. It would be really a pity if it can't be fixed :(

Replacing the ignition switch on one of these is a major job.Although the switch itself is not expensive ,the work reqd entails removal of airbag, steering wheel, stalk switches and steering lock housing.Another cheap alternative is to take an ignition power supply from the heated window switch which is next to radio aperture.hth

It might be worth checking for a feed on the switched live before condeming the switch or the wiring.
Multimeter set to DC volts, with the red probe on the switched live terminal and the black probe on the earth terminal (or metal earth point / dash bracket - whatever's easier). Switch on the ignition and see if you get a reading.
If not, I'd go with the advice above and just wire the thing up permanently, remembering to switch off/remove faceplate when you park the car up.

Thanks guys. I'll try the multimeter first. By the way, DP, what do you meant by 'switched live terminal'? What would you suggest if the voltage turns out to be too low or I can't get a reading at all? Many thanks!

Sorry, I meant the smaller live feed that runs from the ignition switch. It should be live at ignition on, and dead with ignition off. Test it at the pin on the multiplug or the terminal block (whichever is fitted)
If you can't get a reading, do as elekie suggests and take a feed from somewhere else, such as the heated rear window switch. Either that, or if you don't mind the radio not going off with the ignition, connect both live wires on the radio to the permanent live feed on the car. If you forget to turn the radio off though, you will have a flat battery in the morning.

Thanks guys, after a few days waiting I finally got my multimetre from ebay :) Now it is as what you said the ignition wire has no voltage at all. So I probably want to try get the feed from the rear heated window or front window washer, etc. But how can I find out where those wires are, are there any diagrams that I can follow? Many thanks!
