Hi all,
I have a Toyota Avensis, 1998 model, and have the master key which has the lock and unlock button on the key fob.

I've recently had to change the battery and the central locking only locks the car, yet doesn't unlock it. the immobilizer code in the fob is okay, as it does start the car, though the indicators keep on flicking rapidly.

Does anyone have Auto Data handy? - as i know they use to put key programming information on their. Or, does anyone know how i can programme the central locking onto the original key with a series of instructions? e.g. hold down both buttons for 15seconds, unlock and voila?

Hi all,
I've figured this out - and for anyone else who may have a similar problem with Toyota Avensis's or possibly toyota's with the Central locking on the key fob, here's how to programme the c/l on the keyfob to work and lock/unlock the car:


keys out of the barrel
open drivers door (leave open)
insert fault key and turn 'on' (dont start the engine)
wait 10 seconds
then press the 'unlock' button twice
you should hear the doors try to unlock/lock

and that should do the trick. worked for me first time.

Hi,

I have an 98 Avensis 2.0 and pretty much the same problem.
I have two FOBs which both needed new batteries.
The procedure above worked on ONE of the FOBs but not on the other.
So I dispaired all remote controls and paired them again after which both FOBs lock the car but doesn't unlock them (like in the problem statement above). Immobilizer is a different animal, so that part's fine all the time.
Then I tried the above procedure but it doesn't work on any of the two keys.
My assumption is that the above procedure is incomplete and that I did - not knowingly - something additional (like closing the door and THEN removing the key etc.) which I can't reproduce.
So I have two questions:
A) what does "keys out of the barrel" mean ? (I'm not native british, so I associate "barrel" with a specific part of a gun and a Guy-Rithchie-Movie)
B) could you reveal your sources of that procedure or go back to that source and ask for missing steps ?

I've just had this problem after changing the key fob batteries on my 2000 Avensis 1.8. The only thing I'd mention is that you don't need a 'fault' key to do this. My car hasn't got one so I put my wife's key in the lock barrel and Skiddy's advice worked fine.

Hi I have a avensis sr 2001 2.0 and i bought a key for £25 of ebay because my key switch fell off the circuit board. I can still lock and unlock my car using the unlock button but i'm worried it might fall off aswell. I can get my original key reparied for about £22 but i don't have the time to send it to cambridge to get it repaired. I can also get it programmed for £50 and I don't have the money. My question is will it work my model of car and if not it won't erase the previous installed key fob or something. I really need to be sure because i don't have the time or the money.

Thank you for your great help Skiddy. For almost a year, I used to have only the lock button on the key of my my toyota avensis 99 working. The unlock button stopped working one day.

A few minutes ago, I just tried your info and it makes my unlock button to start working again! Many thanks man.

Very nice, but here's the correct way :-

1. firstly, ensure the interior lamp is working, if it isn't then there's the fault straight away!
2. open drivers door
3. insert key into ignition, then remove
4. close door twice (shut open shut open) leaving door open
5. insert key into ignition
6. close door 3 times ( shut open shut open shut) leaving door shut
7. insert key into ignition and turn (lock - on - lock)
8. remove key
you should hear the locks automatically cycling through lock - on etc
9. now hold down the lock button and press the unlock button 5 times (all the time holding down the lock button),
10. release both buttons, and then press both buttons TOGETHER, the locks should lock and unlock at this stage
11 open the drivers door
That in theory should do the job!!

Anyone know how to reprogramme the fob (it's a Denso unit with 2 buttons) for a 97 Corolla (the newer bug eyed model)? TIA.

1. remove the back of the remote, this contains the battery, so effectively it is disconnected.

2. with the unit apart, hold down one of the buttons for about 5-6 secs.

3. put remote back together again (ie reconnecting battery)

4. hold down one of the buttons for another 5-10 secs

5. press the other button.

6. hopefully, if all is well, the remote will now work.

forgot to mention, do this procedure beside the car (beside the drivers door mirror is best for some strange reason, ensuring all the doors are shut, sunroof closed, bonnet shut etc, and critically, ensure the courtesy lamp is working and set to auto.

Hi Yokel, I tried what you posted and no joy! The batteries are good and did it exactly as you posted. Maybe there is another step as making sure it is done within so many seconds of switching off engine?

... strange.... I assume the remote fob is seperate from the key, ie not built into the key itself? If so it should be the tvss3 system, and looks like this:-

If so, the procedure is correct, and I would assume that either the remote or the battery is faulty,is the battery fitted the correct way round? ie the base of the battery facing outwards. If the remote is more squarish with square buttons, then that is the TVSS1V, if so let me know and i'll dig out the info.

just had a thought, are you trying to re-tune an existing your remote? This is what i have assumed, However if you are trying to tune in a new remote to your car then the procedure is different, once again let me know and i'll post the instructions up here.

Hi Yokel thanks for your reply. Yeah it is a seperate fob unit and not built into the key. I'm trying to retune the existing original fobs which did work when I first bought the car (well, one of them did anyway!) then stopped working, so I bought a new battery- correctly fitted.

The fob is slightly different to the one in the pic, the buttons are more 'central' and are squarish (one above the other, upper one says 'lock' and lower one says 'unlock'). The back of the fob says Denso 1512T 1997.

Hello Sprice,
Right here goes, it's a bit of long one i'm afraid
Firstly, ensure your vehicle is a japanese buit example ie, chassis number will start with JT-----
1. get in drivers seat leaving door opened and key NOT in ignition
2. insert key into ignition and remove
3. press the door lock - unlock button (on door panel switch gear) 5 times (40 secs max)
4. close drivers door then open it
5. press lock - unlock button 5 times again
6. insert key into ignition
7. turn ign key from 'lock' to 'on' ONCE (no more as you can wipe all codes)
8. remove key from ign
9. the central locking should now start locking and unlocking on it's own
10. within 20 secs press and hold the remote 'lock' switch for more than 1 second
11. once more if the receiver has received the signal the door locks should start operating on own
12. close drivers door and open it
13 press and hold the 'lock' button on remote for more than 1 second.
14 the door locks should once more cycle lock to unlock on own, once this time
15. if another transmitter need tuning carry out steps 10- 15 with next transmitter


Thats it, all things being equal it should now work.
NB it's not uncommon to take a few attempts to get it to work!

My wife drives a Corolla 1998 S Reg GS 1.3 Auto Hatchback car. It's a UK model and could you tell me how I can make this key fob work which I have just bought from ebay. Toyota Avensis 2000(W) 1.8 key fob C/L programming - badapple
Hi, Can someone please give some advice.
I have the above car and just changed the batteries on the fob and now it will UNLOCK the doors but will NOT LOCK them.
The locks open/close OK with the KEY and the engine starts.
I've just been to Toyota and they want £60.00 + VAT just to reset the fob.
I have tried some methods on this site buy without any luck.
Surely there is a simple method to re-set the key!
Please help as I only have 1 key.

Hi yokel, thanks for the tip, I can now lock unlock my 99 avensis with the key- all lock/unlock together but fob is still not working. I put new batteries in before doing your routine, one question though- after stage5-insert key into ignition, do you remove it before going to stage 6 or leave it in. stage 7 says insert key so i presume it has to be removed before it can be inserted. do i remove it after stage 5 or stage 6. thanks again

Hi, I had a similar problem with my keyfob and followed the procedure posted by yokel38 on 8 Dec,2008 with a slight variation - in step 5, I inserted the key into ignition and then removed it BEFORE proceeding to step 6. I worked, but I had to repeat the procedure 4 or 5 times (my neighbours were probablty cursing me for slemming the car door..) before my key started working again, but it is definitely working now :). Your steps just resolved over a year long Remote UNLOCK/LOCK issue on my Avensis 1999.

I also have the below issue believed to have been complication of the previous Lock/UNLOCK problem.

Please can you help ?

The alarm in my car appears to be randomly going off. The indicators however do not light. The alarm does not stop even when I unlock the doors or start the engine and sometimes when I'm driving. The initial pattern repeat for about 30 seconds, stops for about 5 seconds then resume. This cycle repeats for about 10 minutes and there is nothing I am able to do to stop it iether than remove battery terminal. It does not start only untill i lock with the remote

The car is Avensis 1999

Hi All

Sorry to tack this on at the end of this thread, but it seems that there a few people who know their onions here, and indeed this very thread has sorted me out in the past getting a new key fob working for my 98 avensis.

This time though I've gone and got myself in a bit of a muddle.

I have 2 key fobs, the unlock button ceased to function on one, so I bought a replacement circuit for it, and tried to find the same instructions again, but in hindsight I think I ended up following a different set to the ones I followed before, tried a few different ones, to no avail then I remembered that the internal light was somehow important to the circuit required for these instructions to work, I checked mine and it was blown, in the absense of an open shop near by and being my usual impatient self I shorted the bulb connectors with a bit of wire to allow a current to pass through (pretty misguided I know) at this point the entire central locking system stopped working and a queitish beeping noise came from the front of the car everytime a door openned, I thought I'd just mucked it up following the wrong set of instructions or something, later it then struck me that if the bulb has blown and I shorted it out I may have blown the circuit fuse, sure enough I had.

This evening I picked up a set of fuses and internal lights, plugged the 2 in, and first thing I did to test everything is working was get the original key fob and try locking the car, it worked, now the unlock button on my working fob isn't working either (it would really be an appalling coincidence if the physical button has given up on my second circuit, so my suspicion is that I've cocked it up not following the instructions correctly or something) The only way I could get in the car was to unlock the door manually, ofcourse off goes the alarm, the only way I could silence it was to pull out the fuse I'd just replaced, so I'm back to manual locking again (for added delight I was in the dark opposite halfords and the police happened to park up next to me whilst all this was going on :o)

I am pretty sure I found the right instructions again on this thread, but I am now in a situation where if I put the fuse in to program the key the alarm goes off, so I've given it a few goes following the reprogramming instructions with the alarm in full swing, but to no avail, I think I need a way of resetting the alarm so I can at least give the full reprogramming instructions a go, but I have no idea how to do this, the only advice I can find for disabling or restting the alarm is pull the wires out of the alarm itself, which I would be happy to do, the car isn't worth stealing these days anyway, but then would that break the circuit that the key programming needs again ?

realise this is a rambling war and peace effort of a post here, but if anyone has had the patience and interest to read it all and it makes sense and you have any advice to give I would be most appreciative, otherwise it's not such a massive hardship using it in old fashioned manual mode.
